Last week, Arizona’s legislature passed a controversial bill that would allow business owners to deny service to gay and lesbian customers.

Yep, that’s happening.

The Republican backed bill, known as the right-to-discriminate bill or SB1062, was the first of its kind to pass in the state and permits discrimination as long as business owners assert their religious beliefs.

The measure, which the state House of Representatives passed by a 33-27 vote Thursday, is now in the hands of Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican and former business owner who has expressed that Americans have the right to deny customers service. With pressure mounting and politicians encouraging her to veto the bill, Brewer stands between her own beliefs and issuing a controversial bill in a polarizing political climate.

“I think anybody that owns a business can choose who they work with or who they don’t work with,” Brewer told CNN in Washington on Friday. “But I don’t know that it needs to be statutory. In my life and in my businesses, if I don’t want to do business or if I don’t want to deal with a particular company or person or whatever, I’m not interested. That’s America. That’s freedom.”

American freedom, huh? Something tells us we’re pushing those freedoms a little too far to discriminate against others. That’s nothing new — during slavery, owners used their freedom of religion to justify the enslavement of humans. After it was abolished, laws were implemented to legalize the discrimination of people of color. And today…well, enter Arizona, the state that is now attempting to justify discrimination of gays and lesbians at the expense of religion.

Nice try, but conservatives aren’t fooling anyone.

In fact, all of this is sounding a bit too familiar. Here are 11 things that remind us of Arizona’s bigoted attempt:

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni:

Yep, the same guy who passed an anti-gay bill into law this week and prompted a Ugandan newspaper to publish a list Tuesday of what it called the country’s “200 top” homosexuals, outing some Ugandans who previously had not identified themselves as gay. Birds of a feather, Arizona. Birds of a feather…

Jim Crow Laws:

Here’s an actual Jim Crow law, implemented between 1876 and 1965 to enforce racial segregation: “It shall be unlawful to conduct a restaurant or other place for the serving of food in the city, at which white and colored people are served in the same room, unless such while and colored persons are effectually separated by a solid partition extending from the floor upward to a distance of seven feet or higher, and unless a separate entrance from the street is provided for each compartment.”

While not entirely the same (the civil rights of both groups are inherently different), there are some similarities that we just can’t ignore. Agree or disagree…gives you something to think about in 2014, huh?

Rush Limbaugh:

When we can compare your ideology to Rush Limbaugh’s, you’ve lost.

And Ann Coulter:

Apparently civil rights are only for blacks. Sorry gays, women and immigrants.

Duck Dynasty:

Remember this comment that got Phil Robertson suspended from the hit A&E show?

“It seems like, to me, a vagina — as a man — would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.”

And get this… his views, he says, are based on his religion. Hear that, Arizona?

Chris Broussard:

“[Homosexuality] is walking in open rebellion to God.” So, Arizona can’t serve you a burger and fries at the local diner. Sorry.

Alec Baldwin:

Not okay dude, not okay.

Westboro Baptist Church:

You never want to be these guys. Ever.

And finally…this guy who refuses to serve gays, blacks and what he calls “freaks:”

And we quote: “Somebody calls me a bigot, that doesn’t bother me…I really don’t want gays around. Any man that would compromise his body would compromise anything.”

If you don’t want to be aligned with any of the ridiculousness above, do yourself a favor, Arizona. Kill the bill.
