Zac Efron was violently attacked after finding himself in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The actor was reportedly involved in a fight near Skid Row in downtown L.A. just after midnight Sunday night. Police told TMZ they were patrolling the area under the Harbor Freeway when they spotted Zac and a man he identified as his bodyguard involved in a scuffle with at least three other people.

Police quickly intervened, breaking up the fight and then questioning Zac. According to TMZ, Zac told police he had run out of gas and was sitting in the car waiting for a tow truck to arrive. He said while waiting for the truck, he tossed a bottle from his car, which smashed on the ground near the other people involved in the fight.

Efron claims he was then confronted by the other people, who reportedly believed he had intentionally tossed the bottle at them. The actor alleged that two of the others involved attacked his bodyguard, prompting him to get out of the car to help him out. When he exited the car, he claims he was punched in the mouth.

“It was the hardest I’ve ever been hit in my life,” he said.

According to TMZ, the area in which the incident occurred isn’t exactly ideal. Cops are frequently patrolling the area for drug deals and gangs. One source told TMZ Zac was “obviously intoxicated” at the time of the incident.

According to law enforcement, no one was arrested because it was viewed as “mutual combat.”

The young actor has a history of drug abuse, completing two stints in rehab for cocaine use.
