A 6.0 earthquake awoke the Bay Area of California this morning, as it damaged buildings and injured nearly 70 people.
The earthquake occurred almost 9 miles south of the famous Napa Valley wine country, striking at about 3:20 am. The quake was felt all throughout the Bay Area, from Santa Cruz to Sonoma County. According to the U.S Geological Survey, this has been the largest earthquake to hit the Bay Area since the Loma Prieta temblor of 1989.
Nearly 2 hours later, a quake of 3.6 magnitude was also reported by the USGS. The aftershock happened at 5:47 am PT at a depth of 5 miles. According to the LA Times:
The National California Seismic System put the chance of a strong aftershock in the next week at 54 percent.
Residents all over the Bay Area reported power outages, the quake leaving about 42,000 customers without power. Fire fighters, as well as the California Highway Patrol, have been on the lookout for damages on bridges and buildings. An overpass on the highway shows the roadway separating and concrete crumbling.
