Movies this summer have pretty much sucked.

Some of them fell far short of expectations, others were just god awful, and some just looked so bad that people didn’t even bother to go see them.

But luckily for you, I’ve seen basically all the movies that came out this summer, and I’ve picked 7 of them that won’t leave you feeling like you just wasted $15 dollars to sit in the dark for two hours.

In no particular order…

Chef — I am a foodie, and this movie left me craving Cuban food and chocolate lava cake. If you’re not that into watching food for two hours, then know this is a movie about family and tweeting responsibly. It’s a great date movie or just nice for the whole family to watch. The best part about this one is not everyone has seen it or even heard about it, so you’ll be able to put your friends up on a good movie.

Guardians Of The Galaxy — There’s a reason this one is dominating the box office this summer. This is the best movie I’ve seen all year-long. GOTG is funny, action packed, and cheesy. Good stuff.

The Purge Anarchy — This is everything the first Purge movie wasn’t. It had me jumping out of my chair, sitting on the edge of my seat, and horrified by the idea of this happening in real life. Add to that Carmen Ejogo being great eye candy. Winning.

Get On Up — The James Brown biopic is a lot of things, but the most important is that it’s the best example of acting I’ve seen this summer. Chadwick Boseman does such a great job as James Brown that it will feel like you’ve seen a ghost on-screen. While turning James Brown’s life into a PG-13 movie might seem like a disservice to some, it’s rare to see an award-winning performance like the one Chadwick put on in this film.

22 Jump Street — If you’re in the mood to laugh, I recommend spending your holiday weekend hitting the theater to see this. There are unexpected twists, jokes that will leave you in tears, and just the right amount of action to give you the most bang for your buck.

Blended — Critics hated this film, but I really enjoyed it. Adam Sandler is officially the white Tyler Perry these days, but this film wasn’t awful like his last few servings. If you’re willing to give Adam another chance, I say go check this one out to see him and his girl Drew Barrymore do their thing again.

Edge Of Tomorrow — This movie got spanked by Fault In Our Stars, but it’s actually one of the best action films released this summer. Tom Cruise, Bill Paxton, and Emily Blunt shine in the Sci-Fi flick. It’s doing amazing internationally and is one your safest bets for movies to see this Labor Day Weekend.
