“Even if you have no idea who Zendaya Coleman is…you’d probably suspect, just by looking at her, that she’s someone.”

We’re gonna let you finish Teen Vogue, but we’re very familiar. Z has been a longtime favorite of ours ever since she stepped into the spotlight as one of the most fashionable teens on the scene with a wardrobe that could rival that of someone twice her age.

Now, the Disney diva takes center stage on the cover of the February issue, where she finds herself set in the Mojave desert suiting up in designer combat gear with a military-colored palette of greens and browns. Inside, the 18-year-old opens up about not always feeling liked, saying that she often felt like her acting peers hated her.

Zendaya also spills on her relationship with Trevor Jackson and what’s coming up next for her in television—she stars in and co-produces a new Disney show called K.C. Undercover—and music. Keep reading for some excerpts.

On her relationship status with Trevor:

“My best guy friend is Trevor Jackson. We met when we were 12 years old working on a Sears commercial. Everyone likes to make a bigger deal of what it is, but he’s my best friend and we’re always together. He knows what I’m going through. He’s not my boyfriend, but who knows what could happen in the future.”

On making urban “R&B with a touch of pop” music:

“I’m so excited to be in a place where I can do my best work and where what I create will be promoted properly,” Zendaya says of her new music. “My first record was a baby step in the right direction, but now it’s time to go full force.”

On not alienating her younger fan base:

“The majority of my fan base are young girls, and I don’t want to leave that world forever. But I also want to reach the preteens, the teenagers. A lot of college students watch the Disney Channel in their dorms, actually.”

On not feeling liked when she was younger:

“A lot of the kids who were auditioning had been doing it since they were like, 2. They were these purebred Hollywood children, and I was this random chick from Oakland just doing my thing…I think a lot of them hated me.”
