Before Katy Perry performs during the Super Bowl XLIX halftime show—a 12-and-a-half minute performance in front of a stadium of 63,400 and a TV audience of 100 million, no big deal—she takes center stage on the cover of Billboard.

“Everyone has been asking me if I’m going to be nervous before the halftime show,” the “This is How We Do” singer tells the music magazine. “I’m f—ing human. This is the biggest event of my career.”

But at least she doesn’t look it. In her photoshoot, Katy’s a fierce little firework with the wind in her hair and a firm gaze into the camera. And like the players who have been training hard all season to hopefully lead their team to victory this February 1, she, too, has been getting her head in the game.

In the inside story, Katy talks more about everything leading up to her halftime show, calling it “the cherry on top of everything I’ve already done,” and less about the headline-making aspects of her life. On dating (whether with John Mayer or Diplo), she doesn’t say much except how she’s learned to keep her private life private. And on her suspected feud with Taylor Swift, she says:

“If somebody is trying to defame my character, you’re going to hear about it.”

There are more important things that matter to Katy right now, especially the big Beyoncé-sized shoes she has to fill Sunday:

“She brought so much strength, so much sassiness and just the right amount of sex,” Perry says. “She’s an icon. Elvis, The Beatles, Michael Jackson — she’s in that category. I’m not. She’s like five notches above me, and those levels are compounded in difficulty.”

There’s level to this.
