Looks like Giuliana Rancic is playing the blame game.
After taking full responsibility for accusing Zendaya of smelling like “patchouli oil and weed” when she wore dreadlocks to the Oscars, then apologizing for the insensitive comment, the E! News and Fashion Police host is singing a slightly different tune.
According to the Daily News, Giuliana is now saying that the line was pre-written and pre-planned and no one, including the writer, found it to be offensive. The Daily News reports:
The 40-year-old E! star told Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush that because the Oscars were so close to the taping of “Fashion Police” they had a few lines that were previously planned. Originally the line was supposed to be “she looks like she smells like patchouli oil” followed by “I heard she’s going on a tour with the Grateful Dead,” referring to hippie culture. No one thought the line was racist, Rancic told Access Hollywood.
Whether it was the writer or Giuliana who wrote the line and did not find it offensive, the point is…it should not have been said.
