Last night’s premiere of VH1’s original movie The Breaks brought hip-hop fans out in droves.
The film takes place in New York City during the golden age of hip-hop – when the culture took mainstream America by storm in the ’90s. But one hip-hop legend in particular, Irv Gotti, wasn’t too happy with the movie’s representation of his hometown of Queens.
The Murder Inc. boss took to Instagram to express his frustrations with the flick, claiming it makes the NYC borough look too soft. He posted a picture of a map of Queens and even hinted at making his own, more “accurate” depiction of the city during hip-hop’s maturation.
“I’m watching this watered down bullshit which is pissing me off cause they are not portraying Hip Hop Culture accurately!!” he wrote. “But they still making my Borough look soft. Let me tell y’all something. I’m from that Purple Part in the pic I posted. And listen. Ain’t nothing weak or soft about QB.”
A representation of each borough during hip-hop’s younger and more impressionable years would make for interesting content and shed light on different points of view. Did you watch The Breaks; what do you think?
