Sean Penn has finally opened up about his outlandish interview with El Chapo and even went so far as to call it a “failure.” His intent was to ramp up the conversation about American policies when it comes to the war on drugs, but that’s not how things turned out.

I have a regret that the entire discussion about this article ignores its purpose, which was to try to contribute to this discussion about the policy in the war on drugs,” he told CBS News.

Penn even mentioned Chicago, where murders and drug-related crimes run rampant.

Let’s go to the big picture of what we all want. We all want this drug problem to stop. We all want them – the killings in Chicago – to stop. We are the consumer. Whether you agree with Sean Penn or not, there is a complicity there.”

The 55-year-old actor’s actual interview with the now-recaptured kingpin went overlooked and more focus was placed on the fact that the meeting even occurred, as well as its possible legal ramifications. Penn openly admits it didn’t get the job done, saying, “Let me be clear. My article has failed.”

If you are in the moral right, or on the far left, just as many of your children are doing these drugs … And how much time have they spent in the last week since this article [came] out, talking about that? One percent? I think that’d be generous.”

Penn also comments on the attorney general of Mexico claiming that his visit with El Chapo was “essential” to the drug lord’s capture. The actor chalks the declaration up to the Mexican government being humiliated that El Chapo evaded them for so long.
