60 Feet Of 340 Bicycles Make A 5 Story Masterpiece (PHOTOS)

Posted September 9, 2010 by admin for Global Grind Staff

A 60 ft, 5 story high piece of artwork made of bicycles? 340 bicycles to be exact and a tricycle. The Cyclisk is an obelisk constructed in Santa Rosa, California as a tribute to the California bike culture done by Mark Grieve and Ilana Spector.

Installed on August 21st, the sculpture is made from recycled bicycle parts. The parts were collected from non-profit community bike projects.

Mark Grieve is best known for installing incredible scultpures at the annual Burning Man Festival. Burning Man is a week long event that takes place in the desert around the labor day holiday, and actually just ended this past Monday. Hundreds of thousands of people come together, camp in the lonely desert, create wild and unusual pieces of art and then at the end of it all, burn it all to the ground. Grieve has made many sculptures that have been used in this yearly ritual.

Mark Grieve started his career off with gallery art, moving on to large scale contemporary art and most recently public sculptures. Ilana Spector works as Grieve's partner.
