UPDATE: John Galliano has been fired by Dior following statements released by actress Natalie Portman.
The firing came minutes ago and hours after Galliano made an appearance at a Paris police station to answer charges of racial hatred.
Jewish actress and Academy Award Winner Natalie Portman has come out swinging against John Galliano after video of the brand's creative director surfaced yesterday showed the designer declaring his love of Hitler in a Paris bar.
The video, posted on the web site of The Sun, showed a separate incident at Le Perle, the same Parisian bar Galliano allegedly abused a couple in last week.
In the video, Galliano, in a slurred voice, taunts patrons saying, “people like you would be dead,” and that “your mothers, your forefathers” would all be “gassed.” He added, “I love Hitler.” No one knows when the video was recorded.
'I am deeply shocked and disgusted by the video of John Galliano's comments that surfaced today. In light of this video, and as an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr. Galliano in any way,” the 'Black Swan' star and Miss Dior Cherie spokeswoman said in a statement according to the New York Times.
'I hope at the very least, these terrible comments remind us to reflect and act upon combating these still-existing prejudices that are the opposite of all that is beautiful,' Portman's statement continued.
Galliano, 50, was suspended by Dior last Friday. Yesterday the designer made an appearance at a Paris police station to answer charges of anti-Semitism. It is a crime in France to incite racial hatred and the statute has been used to prosecute offenders.
No comment was made by Dior regarding the video.
