Breaking My Silence On American Classics & Walmart

A few years, ago I was speaking at a University about entrepreneurship, taking responsibility, financial empowerment, and spiritual matters (usual subjects for me). During my speech a student interrupted and challenged me with a question, "If you want students to have priorities and make better choices, why do u sell your denim for 90 bucks?"  He went on to ask, "Are we to assume that if we don't have $90 jeans we aren't cool?".   I didn't quite know how to address that question since the campaigns I had waged seemed to imply just that.

While I am addicted to fun exclusive fashion items, I am also steadfast on the concept that I founded my first and second fashion companies on, "classic American flava". That is the simple understated elegance that always defined my mentor Tommy Hilfiger, and other inspirations like Ralph Lauren,.  And, while I am not one who cares if I have a horse or a special emblem on my pique shirt or on my 5-pocket jean for that matter, I am one who likes the right wash on my denim or wash and fabric in my classic pique.

Most of what I have bought or borrowed as inspiration for American Classics has been so simple that, produced in mass quantities, the price can be made accessible to everyone who's interested in better choices, giving people like that student and others the option to look cool without spending a lot of money.

American Classics is meant to reflect classic style for everyone.  So when I notice that WWD and others have described my American Classics line as urban, for those writers you have to ask yourself, what defines my line as urban?  Their definition of urban seems almost to be a bad word and is certainly a confining one.  My intention is to dress America without limitation.  My designs speak for themselves and make clear that intention. We had tremendous success with Phat Fashions expanding into bedding, fragrances, lingerie, shoes and children’s apparel. This kind of expansion is our plan with American Classics.?American Classics speaks to the new American culture that is unified, integrated, and moves as one force dedicated to uplifting each other. Respectfully, American Classics is for those people who shop at Wal-Mart who are interested making fashion forward sophisticated choices.

Right after that inspirational challenge at the university and long before there was an economic crisis to speak of, I embarked on my mission of giving all Americans a competitive edge in fashion.  It has given me great satisfaction, and giving Americans more for less is a challenge I am up for.  In fact, designing American Classics has been a real pleasure.   The merchandising and imagery around American Classics are what I envision or wish for all Americans and for all of the human family. I don't believe that American Classics is for people who make less but it is for people who are smart with what they make.

I hope you enjoy.

  • Congratulations on the launch of the new line Russell. One of my interests is in the area of Pan-African Economic Empowerment. It seems that the epicenter of global clothing manufacturing are the Asian Nations of China, Japan, etc. I was wondering why aren't West African Nations like Ghana, Liberia, or Senegal players in clothing manufacturing? I would really like to see Wealthy African-Americans invest in developing African Economies. Perhaps building a manufacturing operation in West Afican Nations then contracting to manufacture clothes for export to the U.S. What's your take on the Economic Opportunities in emerging West African markets?
  • Stop worrying about insignificant people that don't matter. They are the losers! We Won this election and they gonna bug us until Obama finish his bid so let it roll off your back. Pray for these people that think bad thoughts of Obama & his family.
    • TheNewYorker, You can help, don't be complacent, this is very worrisome, complain to google and get this person taken off the internet. This is what is wrong with out country, just because we won, does not mean we can just sit back permit conduct of this nature.

Go complain to google about this person's blog and get it removed from the internet. I am sure President and Mrs Obama hate this stuff, we must all do our part to keep this from continuing.
  • Mr. Simmons, We are all American Classics, all but the maggots who are loose in our society and try and hurt others.

You are an American Icon recognized by your great works in many areas, and your impeccable reputation.

Mr. Simmons we are spreading the word about a horrible man by the name of Larry Sinclair and we need your help to stop this man from putting lies out on the internet and in a Globe magazine article. The guy is such a maggot and liar. He posted an article to day on his blog titled - DEAR MR. "BASTARD CHILD" PRESIDENT: "Show The World What Kind of Man You Really Are" coward! -

This is an awful article even to the point of Sinclair accusing President Obama of murdering a man. Sinclair says in various web sites and blogs that he wants President Obama dead. Would you please complain to Eric Schmidt the CEO of google about this man.

Here is his Google Blogspot address http://larrysinclair-0926.blogspot.com/

Go there and you will see what I mean.

We would very much appreciate any help you can give us in

getting this person's blog and also his website that advertises his awful so called book about President Obama and Michelle. Here is that web site address-

    http://www.sinclairpublishingllc.com/

    Thank you Mr. Simmons!
    • Correction - Some Sinclair posters on one of Sinclairs websites have suggested that they want President Obama dead and Sinclair says that President Obama had his people murder a man.
    • Statement from Larry Sinclair a little earlier today on Larry Sinclair's web blog as follows; Sinclair states "Yo, Terminator, oops, I mean Lynne, why don't you ask "your"

president to be a man and just come clean rather that demanding

that the rights of American citizens be halted because you can't

come to accept you have a lying, drug using, drug selling, closet

f*ggot and murderer in office." Sinclair has accused President Obama of being a "Murderer" today.
  • I think making the move to market a product in a retailer like Walmart is a great move...Markets your products to a much larger scale, compared to just being distributed in DrJays or something of that nature. Walmart is everywhere, even in the middle of nowhere where residents dont have malls with the newest streetwear and this and that...They may not have a DrJays or Vinnie Styles but im sure theres a Walmart...

Im a button up man myself, and have a lineup of Phat Farm button ups, so i know ill be keeping my eye open for American Classics button ups in Walmart.
  • Hi Russell!

I have been trying to get in touch with you and maybe this will do it! Your book "Do You" changed my life in ways I can't even begin to tell you except that Grateful Graffiti launched because of you! We are "Tagging the town Positive!" Maria Shriver appreciated our product so much that she invited us to exhibit at the women's conference and I was hoping, since you were speaking there, that I would be able to show you my copy of your book which I have read no less than 6 times with every other word highlighted and almost every page "dog earred!" Anyone who hasn't read "Do you" should. I have recommended it to everyone I know! Thanks so much for helping me see the light!

    Kindest Regards,

    Nell
    • i must say that there is nothing in my book that doesnt appear in every spiritual or religous text the truth is we all know all this stuff intuitively i simply tried to restate the obvious in a way that might ring a bell of truth in people that i can relate to its such an inspiration when i hear that my book helped someone "remember to remember'" thanks again the practice of restating these truths also inspires me to continue or to practice love
  • i have struggled with the urban rap through music comedy poetry fashion and even jewelry design and each time we have had to overcome this urge on the gatekeepers to limit us to 1/10 of the population i dont want to be defined by my color but by my designs
  • CHEERS TO AMERICAN CLASSICS.
JUST HEARING THE NAME URGES ME TO BUY IT.
I KNOW IT IS GOING TO BE GOOD.
AFTER ALL, IT'S ALL COURTESY OF OUR ONE AND ONLY, RUSSELL SIMMONS!!!
  • I shop at Walmart all the time and I will be looking for your product. I buy clothes from Target, Walmart, Macy's, Lord & Taylors & anywhere I see something I like.
  • Probably the part of your editorial that grabbed me the most was that the focal point of the critiques weren't on the quality of the clothing or the marketing campaigns used. It wasn't that the critic was touching on any real, significant, substantial flaw that would undermine your intentions with the clothing, it was the demographic that your clothes would most likely to purchased by. "Urban" is the new "hood" in which one might reasonably come to the same context as "Madea" is the new "Mammy" character.

Sorry to say to those who believe in the aforementioned statement but the entire world is "urban" because you can't escape the influences it has. From language to sports, from clothing to academia, there's an inclusion into our very being. So for someone to call something as universal as clothing "urban" smacks of Jim Crow bigotry through and through. I don't know, perhaps I just interpreted that wrong. • Thanks for the well wishes i must admit that i have been thinking about the responses to my launch.... all day yesterday
I kept getting the responses about "how much money im gonna make" the truth is i love service and i do
enjoy having cash to invest in charities
and new companies but whats exciting is that since i know people are struggling to pay for education and basic essentials i believe lightening the fashion load for them could be a real gift that i can be happy with ,outside of giving it, i have very little need for gettin money ..... I have cable and a house in the country my apartment is too big and my car is a gas guzzler im ok with all of these things but im not working for more junk you may already know this but i gotta say this again im a meditater im mostly comfortable, even happy in my one seat and i know i can only sit my ass in one seat at a time so the venture is part of a major mantra "to be of good service" just rambling this morning but i do hope we americans can get over the idea that more expensive is better cause in this case and in most cases its just silly.. Here comes the preaching... save money for your family,if u need to, and save money for the poor if u dont have beautiful day ..
    • Mr. Simmons, thats great I'm very happy and excited for you with your new business venture its wonderful and americans will really appreciate you with this, they just don't know it yet..... Love the site hope to work for you one day.... Thanks Lots Pashae

  • Russel stay on his grind man .

    Much Success .
  • I would like to formally introduce myself to you extraordinary people taking advantage of Communication through the internet. American Classic will definately be a brand that can thrive and become successful.
