Jennifer Hudson has won the role of Winnie Mandela in the upcoming film “Winnie.”  The film is based on the biography “Winnie Mandela: A Life.” by Annie Marie du Preez Bezdrob.

Winnie Mandela was a heroine in the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa.  She became well known during the 27 years her then-husband, Nelson Mandela, was in prison.  Winnie and Nelson divorced in 1996 when he learned she had been unfaithful to him.  She was also convicted for being involved with the kidnapping and murder of a 14-year-old boy.
