Minnesota Vikings Defensive End Ray Edwards is quietly one of the NFL's biggest hustlers. When not racking up sacks on the field, #91 is promoting his True Ink clothing line, set to debut at BET's Rip the Runway this year, modeling and honing his boxing skills. Although his career so far has been great and even bigger things lie ahead, the humble Edwards still considers himself 'one of the little guys out there' in the NFL. GlobalGrind had a chance to catch up with the 26 year old football player/entrepreneur this week and talk about what he'll do if the NFL has a lockout, Chanel Iman or Giselle, the Randy Moss drama, and the best strip clubs in America. Read below for our exclusive interview with one of the NFL's rising stars.
So we hear you’re working on a clothing line. What can you tell us about it?
Yeah I’m working on a clothing line called True Ink. Basically it’s about an inspirational lifestyle. Just true sayings like if you came across one of my shirts during the day it would probably brighten up your day and help you refocus on the goals and the dreams that you want to try and accomplish.
When and how did you get the idea for a clothing line?
I’ve been working on the idea for about three years now and I really just got with a good designer now to get my vision across and it basically just came from life lessons. Just having to be a strong presence and wanting to uplift people instead of trying to downgrade people and not be a role model. It’s still in the works I’m actually trying to get stuff together right now to get on BET’s Rip the Runway at the end of February, so hopefully I can get everything done. I have a meeting with my designer on Thursday trying to get the looks that they need to get it done to debut on TV.
You’ve modeled in the past. Had you been doing that before BET's Rip the Runway or was that your first time modeling?
That was the first modeling gig I got. I’m trying to start my own thing because sometimes they don’t like using big guys. They usually want to use the smaller guys so I’m trying to start my own thing where I can get guys that want to model out there who aren’t the norm like 5’5’’ a hundred something pounds (laughter). Modeling is definitely fun to me.
What was your favorite performance of the BET Rip the Runway event?
My favorite one was Keri Hilson because I think she’s very beautiful so I like watching her do her thing. And T.I. definitely put on when he was there in ’08. I did that one when T.I. released his Akoo clothing line I got to meet him and the energy he brings [when he performs] is ridiculous.
