REACTION?

Allow me to re-introduce myself. My name is...Reagan Gomez. I’m an actress, I’m a wife, and proud mother of a two-year old daughter. I’m living my life, and I’m blessed to still be working after all of these years. But a lot of girls from back in the day, aren’t around anymore.

Black Hollywood is a very small community. We all know each other. There’s a special place in my heart for women from the 90’s, like me, who are still around and in good health. This is not an easy business to grow up in, especially for a young black woman. It’s all too easy to get “Caught Up” in the life. You have men just waiting for you to turn 18, and some men don’t wait. Hip-Hop and Hollywood are one in the same, so it can be one big world of excess and false reality. Lots of “YES” people…and if you’re 15, 16, 17, making 400k a year, those “yes” people, may be your own parents. But, not all families are like this.

A majority of girls from back in the day, who are still around, have to give credit to their families. I know I do! They keep you sane, and keep you grounded, in a world that can literally make you LOSE YOUR MIND! From drugs, to men, to partying, to trying to maintain the “Hollywood” standard of beauty, aka, staying thin, (and there’s lots of drugs for that) it’s all one big house of broken mirrors.

Not to mention, the “ROLE” of the black actress has changed. In the 90’s, everyone was working. From Parent’hood, to Moesha, to Family Matters, and movies like, The Best Man, Love and Basketball, Soul Food, Love Jones, Set It Off, there was always WORK! It’s not the same. So many talented people are out of work. So when 1 or 2 roles do come around, 30 amazing actresses all go out for it. Only 1 can get it. So where does that leave everyone else? Why, you ask? Let me make this perfectly clear. HOLLYWOOD IS FOR EVERYONE! IF I WERE BEING THROWN OPPORTUNITIES, I WOULD ABSOLUTELY TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEM TOO!

If Hollywood would rather hire, a MUSICIAN, because they know this person has a set fan base, as opposed to an ACTRESS, then, there goes the work for actress. Plus, Hollywood thinks, no one is interested in seeing new black, FEMALE faces on the big screen. But they’ll hire new white faces and new black males all the time. Double standard.... yes. Hollywood is for everyone. But there has to be balance, and black actresses are getting the short end of the stick. So what do you do? You live your life, hustle, keep studying your craft, and keep God first. The minute you let your “job” become your “life”, you’re done.  When you see a black female face on the screen, it makes it easier for ALL of us. It’s still a battle. But we’re up for the challenge.

So to all of my fellow actresses, who are still around, and even those who have chosen to give the business up, and pursue other things, I respect you. I love you. We know, all too well, the good and evils of this business. But we’ve learned how to “Work” the business, and not let it, “Work” us:)

  • I can truely appreciate this blog. Especially since up until this very moment, when I would here blk actors/actress' voicing their concerns over leading Hollywood role's going to "celebrities" who weren't really actors I thought they were jus "hating", "mad", or however you'd like to put it. I didn't realize that to those who have studied and perfected their craft, seeing roles they're fully qualified for go to that Hollywood "It" girl can be devastating. Thanx for the incite Reagan! • Reagan u hit the nail on the head babygrl.....i will say tht i'm tired on actress complainin abt ppl like Beyonce gettin their roles whn they r much more qualified....I'm glad tht you talk abt it but let everyone knw tht we all gotta work for our own and CANNOT blame any1 else for not gettin wht we feel is ours.....
  • Miss. Gomez, i read your blog and some of the replies that we're sent to you;and with all of that, all i can say is W.H.O.A.How do you stop yourself from going off when someone come's at you with negativity?!?!? But it seems as if we're fighting a similar fight, its just under different situations... I'm in politics, and im getting ready to run for Mayor in a small town, and my main goal as Mayor,is to "BRING REAL UNITY INTO THE BLACK COMMUNITY".... What i gather about us, and correct me if i'm wrong;but we really don't look out for one another, not like we should anyway..... Is it just on sundays, when we want to know if everything is ok with each other?!?!? And evern when we ask that question on sundays, do we really want to know?!?!? darn it all, i lost my train of thought, what i was getting at was going to be connected to hollywood world and the struggle and tole it take's on a black woman/individual! Im overhere doing ten things at once. I will get back with you when im not so busy;sorry!

  • Ms.Gomez, I undertand your grief with the Industry but there are a lot of powerful people in hollywood that have the authority to hire people of color chose not to. I have a real problem with Tyler Perry for such antics. I just find it ridiculous that a person with such access to help his community does so little to show the world what we as people of color can offer them. Why must Megan Foxx and other air-heads get roles because of there blue eyes or blonde hair..!!
Much like one of the first statements made I think there is to much going on in our Country and World to worry ourselves with Entertainment at this very moment. Trust, when I tell you I love the arts, but thats not where are focus needs to be. I would love for you to come on the Rearvue and discuss the topic of Black Females in Hollywood..!! Be a great look for you and plus people need to be informed by such issues along with other worldly events both in our community and in other parts of the world...
    • Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but you are arguing with false information. When has Megean Good been in ANY Tyler Perry film. Personally I feel he is the only one giving black actors/actresses the opportunity. Although he has to go for pull as well. Taraji Henson is a perfect example of someone who has captured enough light to be in Perry's film as well as Benjamin Button. I applaud Perry for trailblazing and making it possible. Many others should follow in his footsteps. And Regean I totally feel you on the singer-turnt-actress blast. Obsessed would have been much better with a seasoned talent who the viewer could see being married with children.
    • My bad you said Megan Foxx; but she's never been in a Perry film either...but would we really want KeKe Palmer playing a demon-possessed cheerleader who eats her male classmates?
  • let beyonce work too, she is black also......if i were in the black community of actresses/actors, i would be speaking to tyler perry, he got all the damn money! why don't you all put your money together and start making great black films, forget the huge studios. it is too much going on in black communities worldwide, to pay attention to who ain't getting paid in hollywood. peace and love.
  • I know, I know, I'm late according to twitter. lol Seriously though, I agree with what you are saying. I asked a director not long ago about being able to break out as a talented actress when many parts are being written with certain celebrities in mind. It's hard! I also write scripts. When I am writing, I think of actresses who would be able to bring that part to life. The realness of the parts is what makes movies work. We wouldn't mind it so much, having a musician play parts, if they would just got on top of their acting skills! If you are working with coaches & taking classes & you still are untalented when it comes to acting, maybe you should lay off accepting roles til you get that undercontrol. I'm sorry, but ya pockets ain't hurtin that bad! I would rather have my name attached to something that I know I worked hard at perfecting and have it turn out GREAT; then have it attached to something that I gave a mediocre performance that caused people to doubt my ability, just because someone offered me a role. They are not looking at how this will in turn make you look or hurt your credibility, but more so how much $$$ you can put in their pockets. When things like this happen, the quality of the industry changes. It's hard for true actresses to just accept that. Someone said, actresses should try to do something different. True, but people should also stay in the realm of their talents. If you know you cannot SING, why get out there and make yaself look like a DONKEY! At the end of the day you've got to live with who you are, who you made, you. People need to stop letting other people make them and we won't have this issue. Did that make sense? LOL!! You feel me?
  • this is @nowljenkins from twitter saying...what happened to maia campbell she was such a lovely young woman. do you keep in contact with her
    • I know Maia was arrested awhile back in Philadelphia. She's bipolar I believe and is supposed to be on drugs. I believe the video of her singing naked and high was on youtube. She was arrested for stealing some1's vehicle I believe it was about 2 or 3 yrs ago. I guess it was the press from losing her mother and being an only child....
    • sorry for the missing speeling I meant to write pressure not press
  • @ kenya, yes everyone is struggling but how can u say something about reagan that is her situation and ur in ur situation. Ex. b/c reagan chose acting as a profession she needs to make sure she continues to get roles or she will end up broke. U have to deal with that in every profession no matter what you do, you need to make sure you continue doing it or u won't be able to take care of your family. I'm sorry ur in ur situation. whatever job or career u decided to do I hope it can work out for u so u can get things together!
  • Reagan the Realest~ You alllready know I love this blog. You have a way of tellin it like it is...w/no apologies. You've been one of (if not thee) most consistent, honest and down to earth actresses I've had the pleasure of knowing. Deserve every bit of success... Keep makin it happen mama~ I'm a supporter ;)

    • It's hard out there for everyone. And I appreciate your comment, even though I strongly disagree. I don't know you, just as you don't know me. Sorry about your situation, but trust, I understand. But I take the opportunity to learn from EVERYONE. Including you. I don't know what your dream was, or if you were able to accomplish it, or if you are still trying to, but I wish you the best. I would think that my blog, would show, that even if you do achieve your dream, you will ALWAYS have to deal with bullsh*t. How are you going to handle it? And do I give back? You have no idea. My problems may not be yours, or visa versa, but in putting my story out there, I would hope that you could take the "good" out of what I was saying, and apply it to your own life. I was raised by an alcoholic single mom, and have been on my own since 16. So, don't allow yourself to be blinded by your own circumstance. My blog was meant to encourage........EVERYONE. If you missed that, sorry.
    • WOW reagan u rock i,m am loving that u replied back to lil o me I know u don,t know my situation and I have been a fan of yours for many years we each have our own personal struggles in life no disrespect I know it,s hard out in hollywhite the roles for beauitful black woman such as yourself are far and in between but you have to think out of the box sometimes reinvent yourself look at my girl mary j blige she keeps throwing bricks at the haters there are many ways not to get lost in the sauce it,s sad but it,s a if it ain,t me it,s not right world especially in the entertaintment world girl i bet u have some stories to tell but you will be fine good souls and angels have your back thanks for reaching out and keep it positive email me i have some ideas for u i would post them but i don,t want everybody taking them u know how it is kenya.knight@mail.com
  • @ Miss L.I I think ur not getting what Reagan is trying to say first when most ppl see her they do not think she is half puerto rican, they see her as black. So I don't think she is denying her race she is just stating the fact of how hollywood looks at things. Second it is true that they are quick to find a new white actress to pump up no matter their talent i.e Meagan fox and others like her. Also I do not think she is being bitter by saying that hollywood thinks about money when their picking actors for movies. There is nothing wrong with entertainers being in movies as long as they can ACT. To me it is wrong for entertainers to take roles from actual actors when they have not perfected their acting skills.
    • Thank You for clarifying that.I never see it like that cause I have cousins who were born and raised in PR who are darker then she is.I see what your saying tho 100%.That sucks...and yes!!! I AGREE!!! lol 50 cent,T.I and anyone else shouldnt be acting alongside Denzel or Tom Cruise.Theres a reason why they chose the profession they chose,GRANTED if an opportunitys given..who the f*ck wouldnt take a role in a movie? You would seriously have to be a dumbass to not jump on that.Guess it just depends who gets their first...who's name gets screamed the most.
