You can't argue with the improvements in picture and sound quality of Blu-ray discs over DVDs but do some homework before you buy a Blu-ray player this Christmas. It could be wasted money if you don't have a full-high-definition screen and good sound system to hook it up to.
Blu-ray discs carry a lot more data than DVDs and this allows the picture and especially the sound to be much better but only when the rest of the equipment is up to the task. Blu-ray has been designed for full-HD screens. If you don't have one, you're unlikely to notice much of an improvement over a conventional DVD.
And even with full HD, you'll only really appreciate the gains in picture quality with a screen of at least 100 centimetres and preferably 125 centimetres. With smaller screens the gains can be difficult to appreciate, which means the extra money becomes hard to justify.
