Lady Gaga's exclusion from last year's Best New Artist GRAMMY nominations caused an uproar amongst her 'little monsters' and the blogosphere. Today, The Recording Academy announced amendments to eligibility requirements for the Best New Artist category which goes into effect immediately for the 53rd Annual GRAMMY Awards on February 13, 2011.
Last year, Lady Gaga was ineligible for the Best New Artist category because her hit single 'Just Dance' had been nominated for a GRAMMY in 2008. Prior to this amendment, artists could not be nominated under the Best New Artist category if they had been previously nominated for a GRAMMY within any category as a featured artist or as a member within a group. Now with these new changes, if an artist is nominated for a GRAMMY but does not win and is nominated prior to the release of an entire album, the artist can then be nominated again for Best New Artist.
