Derrion Albert was an Honor Roll student at Fenger High School in Chicago who was tragically murdered in the mist of a gang fight last Thursday. The video has been witnessed around the world with many asking why did this happen and what provoked this type of violent act? It is a question Derrion's mother is searching for as she prepares for the funeral of her son. A case of gone too soon. What is happening to our youth? This could have been easily a case overlooked by the media if it wasn't caught on video tape. A tape that has made its way across the globe and it even has celebs asking why. Now it is up to us, to stand up and do something. As a parent I am fearful for my children in a World that has no sense of right from wrong and where kids Today have no sense of direction. It isn't enough to be a parent, an aunt, uncle or grandparent. We have to stay on our kids, guide them, and know what they are doing at all times. We can't just send our kids out into the world and hope for the best. That is not parenting at all. We are the adults, the mentors, and we should be doing our part. It use to be a time when we didn't have to worry as much but those days are long gone. Wake up people. We are losing are kids everyday to random acts of violence. Some of the suspects in the case have been caught but their are others. Those who simply just watched, you are equally as guilty. It might sound cold but it's the truth.

  • i watched the video, because there were so many reactions to it - i wanted to be in the 'know'. i haven't cried in a long time, but that instantly touched my heart, and i cried for him. i cried for the young men that did it to him (so cold and unphazed by their harsh actions).
that entire incident reflected the raw hopelessness that our children live with everyday until a real sense of self worth and love is injected into the lives of these unfortunate souls. believe it or not, those boys that did this to derrion albert are just as deceased as he; they just haven't been fortunate enough to encounter whatever mortality that will free them from the vary self hatred that keeps 'em goin.
my prayers go out to derrion and his family, and to all those fractured young men and their families as well.
i'm sure that if the visions that i saw in that video three days ago, still creep into my mind and make me shutter - those boys harbor some demons that the average person would come undone hosting.
    lord help us all.

  • You say that the people who stood and watched are equally guilty, but what most people seem to not get or choose to ignore is that the POLICE WERE THEIR!! Sitting in a police truck waiting for back up!

Even sources from CPD have stated that once more officers arrived, the young men contiued to fight. It wasn't until the police began to taser some the young men, the others started to flee.

As far as the parents being responsible for their own children, that's a no brainer. What most seem to over look is that we are in a genration where only 38% of African-American households consist of two parents.

You have single mothers and fathers working full-time jobs and attending college, trying to create a better life for their families the best they can.

What ever happen to it takes a village? When my grandmother was a young married stay at home mother she would help watch her neighbors children, while the single mother worked. But because the family dynamic has changed so much in our community, that option is not readily available.

So before you judge, please take the time to explain all contributing factors, that lead up to tragic events such as the death of Derrion Albert.
  • god bless you
