The grieving family of a 13-year-old Queens boy shot to death outside a car wash pleaded for witnesses to come forward as investigators took a suspect into custody, police sources said Sunday.

"Do the right thing!" begged Donna Greaves, whose son, Kevin Miller, was gunned down Friday in Cambria Heights. "And let someone know who's responsible."Investigators have a 16-year-old "person of interest" at the 105th Precinct in Queens Village who was being questioned and will be part of witness lineup, the police sources said.

Miller, a freshman at Humanities and the Arts Magnet High School, was shot in the head about 3 p.m. after he and a friend stumbled upon a fight near Campus Magnet High School Linden and Springfield Blvds.

  • You mean to tell me that between Russell, Run and the all of the other multi millionaire/billionaire status of the Simmons empire that the best you all can do is ask for donations via your for profit Global Grind blog site?

Please do better, and offer this grieving mother and her family the peace of mind of not having to bear the financial burden along with the emotional burden she is already suffering.

    • I agree! What kinda "fool hardy" crap is this! Ya'll aint doing crap for the community or people but making money? Ya'll look crazy putting this on your site and asking people for money to pay for a funeral you can pay for yourself. *shaking my head thinking "what in the world"!
  • Heartbreak unfortunately has no cure so despite how many stories we view, or lives we lose, the pain is no less. I have worked w/youth & young adults for 15 years & I am convinced that the problem with youth today is the adults in or absent from their lives. Adults who fail them & allow them to fail, adults who have modeled ill will & expect that all young minds can overcome, adults who perpetuate the myths & stereotypes be it greed, violence, sex or the likes, adults who are too busy getting primped & primed that taking notice of who their children spend their time goes unnoticed. Adults who model that violence is a solution. Adults who sing or rap lyrics that speak of big egos, big cars,& big guns and how killin for the sake of the kill is big fun. Adults, who as children, lacked the picture of success so they in turn set their children up for failure be it by design or default. Prayerfully, we'll get back, back to a place where we regard one another as sister & brother, when we as a people weren't our own worst enemy. Prayerfully we'll get back to a village mentality instead of 1 where we can't correct a child out of line who later becomes an adult doing time. Prayerfully, we'll go back to raising our children instead of leaving them in the hands of BET,MTV,XBOX,or PS3,that bombard them w/images that suggest they live w/lowered expectations & exploit self & others all in the name of fame. Prayerfully we'll go back to a time before make believe where we think of the consequences to our actions BEFORE it's too late. WAKE UP,young brothas & sistas, even when the adults around you are snoozing. Life doesn't have a start over button. Life doesn't let you change out your players in the game, life doesn't allow you to flip thru the channels for something better. Until then another mother's heart aches, another sister sheds a tear, another brother does time, how many MORE this year? I imagine we'll keep fighting this war. They're in 1 overseas & we're in 1 on these streets.
    • I edited the original post placed on twitter. Check it out!
    • Well said. I totally agree.
  • I two have lost someone dear to me just the past month..a twenty-four year old young lady that had two beautiful little girls (1 & 2)..so I know how this lady feels, this was my daughter..everyday I grieve for her, she was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Just like this little boy. her mother is now trying to take care of her kids as well as her fiance'. He witnessed the whole thing, now he's feeling thoughts of suicide. Her mother still has not grieved herself yet, her plate so VERY full..I'm just sory the world is turning out like this...
  • On 09/22/2009 we held a Funeral Service for a young mother protecting her child. On the that friday another child was killed. When did become that we as mother bury our children? Where are the real people for back when i lived in harlem and Miss Johnson and every mother on the block was a parent? We had a village to raise the neighborhood kids. when you could not talk back and Sass a adult. those days my people are gone. You see i deal with all the time were every week their is shooting of young people and inncocent by stander. We need to take back our blocks and street block by block Call the 1 800 gun stop for reporting guns in the home call your local community affairs theya re willing to work with you and have total anonymity to report guns. think about where are all the big time celebs when this happens nowhere only if they go to jail for guns. Where are they when we need support with their presence in a march where???

In the bronx where so many have died young& and ver young as young as Two years old Where are they i challage anyone for the music business to come to me a step up and do their part to Stop The Violence and one of the highest cause of death in our communnity.

Thank you and remember It's not snicthing it's saving a Life!!!( tmfallenangelsnyc) Million Moms MArch Bronx Chapter. Peace
  • It's a real epidemic in our society. Everyone who wears a stop snitchin t-shirt or promotes that foolishness in anyway should be slapped. As I have always said the White man is genius because he has managed generation after generation to re-invent & repackage the slavery/slave mentality to continue making his money by convincing us not to get justice for children , grandmothers etc. & by convincing us that we have attained some false sense of power by calling ourselves the name he gave us to justify, differentiate & label us as lesser humans. What's the point of a stop the violence march & initiative if we go on with biz as usual & our mentality never changes once the smoke & tears clear. Mr. Simmons you know this is wrong & you have real power to change an industry that has broad influence on our young people not just locally, nationally but also globally. If censorship will stop the poisoning of the minds of our young people & prevent deaths then I am for it because we are really doing it to ourselves so we can stop blaming the gov't & the white man because all we have done is use the same formula that we rant against. There are more young Black people killing one another than White cops shooting Black people but I don't see the level of outrage & marches when we perpetuate the idocy on our own. When we will change?
  • ALL major Heads in the music industry (particularly and especially Rap), are directly responsible for Kevin Millers death. The marketing and promotion that the so called "keeping it real" rap music get is designed to kill (black) people like Kevin. That could have been my brother; in fact my little brother’s name is Kevin too. I bet you a $1,000.00 right now if you were to do a profile on Kevin's killer choice of music; his choice would be self-hatred rap music. Notice I didn't call it Hip-hop because the lyrics that are out right now today is GARBAGE! Yes we are killing ourselves, in part because the industry is ran by a 1/2 dozen RACIST billionaires who like to see young black men shot or delivered into the hands of the cops, for residual PROFIT. The other part is inadequate education, In NYC the quality of education in Public Schools is being replaced by Charter Schools (neither who teach black and brown kids they have an identity). I cried real tears when I read the story about Kevin's senseless death my heart really go out to his family. The brother who said "we are killing each other" in the video is right but let's question the sources (Radio, TV, Film, Government Malpractices), I bet it is greater than the streets in any ghetto USA, in fact by the time it hits the streets it's usually (Reduced to it's lowest terms) where the buck stops. I don't fear the KKK, CIA, or FBI my fear are people like Lyor Cohen, and Jimmy Lovine, and anyone else who dictate the direction rap is/and has been going considering where it came from. They make it sociably acceptable for black men to disrespect women and make it fashionable to take a human life with little or no regard, with their "keeping it real" marketing campaign, Shame on You! For all inspiring rappers who want to "Keep it Real" WAKE UP! They are exterminating us at wholesale and using us as an instrument to do it.

Her mentors have set her on course for engaging society in a positive way.

I think the seeds were planted for the consensus against violence as soon as the big Rap music labels came together.

Rap music grew at such a fast rate, you had inner-city tough guys and big media executives brought together to figure out how to bring their talent to the market. The media executives are not without responsibility, but it is far more complicated.

The message of Rap music initially was embraced as informative of the reality of violence on the streets. As the money rolled in, artists began to contest each other bitterly for more attention and the rhymes about violence went from being social commentary to being threats delivered without remorse. The artists get some responsibility for this.

Also, there has been a market for really harsh rhetoric in Rap music. Since then, the violent language has become more metaphorical. Blame the public in general for being so interested in physical confrontations and ego battles.

Still, neither the audience, the rap musicians nor the executives are directly or solely responsible for this tragedy.

Who let a 16 year old get a gun? Politicians, gun dealers, older gang-affiliated boys and men are also playing their roles. Ultimately, the individual who pulls the trigger is considered accountable in proportion to their age.

I still maintain that the hypocritical drug policy the corrupt prison system are the primary causes of fear and insecurity on the streets. Insufficient gun control is right up there as well.

None of this is going to heal the broken heart of Kevin Miller's mother. I hope she is receiving substantial support. She's going to need it.
    • kevin was my lil cousin and no his choice of music was not hardcore rap.first of all i am a rap artist people need to stop blaming society violence on rap because you only here a nd see rap on certain radio or tv stations there are at least 2 to 3 churchs on every block bk queens da bronx etc the are more holy temple than so called rap music if rap muzik is the so called blame for voilence than gospel music should have saved the world rap music don't make guns poeople do rap does'nt hurt people people do you are still young so i would expect more from you but well spoken my lil cousin was a good young man at the wrong place and time thanks for all the support
  • us the working class have to band together and learn that nothing will change until we get the strength to come forward a speak to the police. Everyone has this thing about snitching until its them who needs justice. If we get the criminals off the street maybe then we can live without so much fear. maybe then we wont feel trapped in our homes and heighborhoods
  • THIS IS CRAZY MAN. IN THE LAST 5 MONTHS, I BEEN TO 4 WAKES OF PEOPLE I REALLY HAD LOVE FOR. IT'S WILD ALL OVER THE WORLD IN THE HOOD. WE GOTTA DO SOMETHIN' ABOUT THIS. THESE YOUNGSTAZ THINK VIOLENCE IS GANGSTA. OBAMA'S IN OFFICE!!! INTELLIGENCE IS THE NEW GANGSTA...
  • This killing has to stop while we r killing each other the white man is sitting back laughing my prayers go out to Kevins family god will see you through.
  • My prayers go out Kevin Miller's family and friends. We as society continue to blame those lil dudes in the hoods these days but what about their parents those who are suppose to teach them right from wrong. And I know not everyone has a mother or father in their life but they should have someone besides their blood realitives and friends who probably don't give a d@mn about them in the end. What about teachers, counselors, and authoirty figures I know we all don't like the police but think when it truly comes down to it who do we call? The police right, we blame so many others besides ourselves stop pointing your finger at everyone else and start using your thumbs because in the end it only points back to you. Yes, we have a new president that is willing to do all things to fix 4 years of damage and beyond but don't put all that on him. What can you do naw... what can all of yall do. You seat here for hours commenting about this or that but do something for your community do something for those future doctors, lawyers, therapists, senators and even the next President!!!! I'm not here to preach but I'm here to say we need change and it all starts with us. Because if we don't we will forget Kevin Miller and all the other poor families and innocent citizens in this world that is affected by this violence. I give advice, I try my best to avoid the violence and help my friends as well. So please read this and do something. Our future is always in our hands.

  • THIS sh*t HAS ME THINKING THAT THE END IS NEAR. RIP 2 KEVIN & MY PRAYERS GO OUT TO HIS LOVED ONES. WE NEED TO MAKE A CHANGE BEFORE ITS TOO LATE!
  • My heart and sympathy goes out to Kevin Miller's mother and family. It is time for our society to get the guns away from these kids. Now a days these kids are more angry with life. There are no activities after school for them anymore. Parents are working 2 jobs to pay their bills. Now is the time for the government to get these guns laws change. Its so easy to go downsouth and buy a gun and then come up to New York to sell it. We need to take hold of our kids and tell the WE LOVE THEM AND THEIR LIFE IS WORTH LIVING.
  • God when is this going stop people it really horrible another young life gone. Please parents try your best to keep these children off the street were the animals are. This is crazy everybody want to be a thug with no money god when the black kids of America is going to learn you are making fools of yourself.
