Working Together To Shape The Future Of New York City

As I travel throughout this great city, I see the impact of our urban young professionals everywhere I look.  This is the next generation of leaders in our city.  Many of them are entrepreneurs with a dream – something Russell and I can appreciate.  We know how tough it is to open a small business, whether it’s a retail store or a restaurant or any of the other small businesses that form the backbone of our economy.  And I’m determined to do everything I can to help our entrepreneurs open and expand their businesses.

One of my favorite moments of the campaign came when more 800 urban young professionals filled the nightclub, Touch, to show their support.  New Yorkers from across the city – and across the political spectrum – came together to join our campaign.  People like Kwame Jackson, Mike Muse, Jodi Brockington and so many others came to hear Mayors Cory Booker, Adrian Fenty and others talk about our work in making New York a safer, healthier, green cleaner city with better schools, more jobs, and an honest, effective city government.  They joined our campaign because we’re united in a common mission: creating a first-rate education system for all students, so that all students can pursue their dreams and build successful careers.

New York City is lucky to have an abundance of talented urban young professionals, and I believe that this “hip-hop generation” has enormous power to help make long-overdue changes a reality in our City.  I’ve been proud to work closely with many young leaders who know that with success comes responsibility – the responsibility of giving back and helping others.  And together, we can make sure that all young New Yorkers get the education – and support – that they need and deserve.

One of the biggest reasons I ran for Mayor in 2001 was to win control of the broken public school system – and begin fixing it.  And that’s exactly what we’ve done.  Since 2002, when we abolished the dysfunctional old Board of Education and replaced it with a system of mayoral accountability, we’ve made enormous progress: math and reading scores are up dramatically.  Graduation rates are also at all time highs – after being basically flat for more than a decade.  And we’ve cut school violence by 34 percent.  Of course, we still have a lot of work to do, but there’s no question we’re on the right track – and I believe the next four years will be our best yet.

I’m also committed to expanding opportunity at our community colleges.  Too often, students drop out because they can’t afford the cost of books – or because they can’t afford the cost of day care for their children.  If I’m re-elected, we’re going to cut the cost of books, and we’re going to provide more free day care to more young parents.  No mother or father should have to choose between taking care of their child and getting an education!

We’ll also work to open a new community college that will prepare the next generation for jobs in emerging fields, like our growing green economy.  My goal is for 120,000 New Yorkers to graduate from our community colleges by the year 2020.

New York City’s future belongs to you, the next generation of leaders who are already making a difference in our City’s life.  We share the same goals; we share a determination to fix problems that politicians tolerated for far too long; and we share a sense of independence.  Working together, we can make the greatest city in the world even greater.

On November 3rd, New Yorkers will go to the polls and cast a ballot that will shape the City’s next four years.  My platform is simple: Progress, not politics.  We’ve built the most diverse campaign coalition the city has ever seen – and I hope you’ll join us in these crucial final days.  Please visit www.mikebloomberg.com and sign up to volunteer for the final few days – any time you can give will make a difference!

Thank you for your support, and I look forward to seeing you on the campaign trail.

Mike Bloomberg

  • Wow do any of you have children in the NYC school system did any of you go to an NYC school. You are problem the same people that voted Dinkins out for Giuliani learn more about this city you need to understand what makes NYC Giuliani tore this city down the same way Bush tore this country down. Bloomberg is a Republican an maybe thats why people are attacking him. But we must give credit were credit is due. Forget that Giuliani cut school budgets forget that he took all the trees in the hood down to make it better for the ghetto birds to see, forget that the budget for fighting mosquito's was cut under Giuliani which lead to the West Nile virus as well as him making it virtually impossible for a person with a GED to go to College in NYC. Bloomberg has reversed all of these things. I know what the 80's looked like in NYC as well as the 90's and to the present. NYC is a business, the entire city if you don't understand that move to Kentucky. This man get a 1 dollar to run this city per year and know we want someone with no money except tax payers money to control it I am a reg Dem but if you have not created something comparable to a Fortune 500 company you cannot run this city, special interest will have you by the balls. Bill Thompson may have been good for 1989 but not for 2010. Bloomberg has supported Hip Hop more than any other Mayor out side of David Dinkins. So what he extended term limits so what he spent 100 mil he did it to get the job done an in this CITY THAT'S WHAT WE DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO GET THE JOB DONE NEW YORKERS. IF YOU DON'T LIKE WINNING THEIR ARE 20+ OTHER CITIES YOU CAN MOVE TO.
    • Mayor Bloomberg has done some good things for NYC. But, he also made a lot of political corrupt moves to protect his friends. He should have served his term as Mayor and moved on. "Power can breed corruption" and Politicians should always answer to the people. Mayor Bloomberg is not the King or the only effective leader in NYC. As, previously stated he should have been mentoring someone to assume this position. This country is a democracy, not a dictatorship and the people of New York should have been given the opportunity to vote on extending term limits.

  • Do we really want a Mayor who kind of like paid for his Election? With all of the information that is known why do we still allow this to go on.
    • NYC should have major problems with the fact that Mayor Bloomberg and the Council extended the Mayor’s term without any votes from the people of NYC. The greed of the NYC financial industries and Wall Street stock market went UN checked for 8 years due to deregulation, and his head was buried in the sand and/or he was an active participant of robbing America by the wealth elite of society. We know corruption continually happens when industries are deregulated.

  • NYC is the financial capital of America, during the period 2000-2008; do you honestly think Major Bloomberg was not aware of his industry partner’s greedy activities with deregulation and the Wall Street parasites actions with Mortgage Derivatives? Do you think he played a role in this financial destruction?

Economics 101. America avoided a depression and the collapse of the banking system and a run on bank withdrawals because President Obama and Bush governments stepped up to provide funding for over 800 financial institutions. The majority of these institutions did not file bankruptcy and are still solvent. Hopefully, the majority of this funding will be repaid with interest. Current economic signs are showing repayments are attainable. The eight year (2000-2008) de-regulation of the banking industry and Wall Street continually trading unregulated bungled mortgage derivatives at high prices with unknown actual values created this nightmare. They also insured these derivatives for any potential loss. What stupid company would provide this insurance? Oh AIG and etc. There was no separation of banks lending money to companies and then investing in these same companies. No checks and balance within the system. A lot of wealthy people, besides Bernie Mad off ran off with a lot of money before the stages were locked for this stock market decline. The federals agencies that would regulate and audit these companies and Wall Street were not adequately funded by the Bush administration during this 8 year period. Also, review President Regan deregulation of Saving and Loan in 1980, resulting in the 1989 President Bush Sr. $125 billion bailout of 750 Savings and Loan of the 1980s. President Bush Sr. sons Jeb Bush defaulted on $4.6 million loan, Neil Bush Silverado S& L bailout $1.6 billion by taxpayers. Do you see the de-regulation pattern?

    • Deregulation is always one of the ploys used by the wealthy and industry to make money usually performing some type of corrupt business practices. If America did not have Government oversight (Federal, State and Local) performing these business audits, America would still be the wild, wild, west. Government does have its share of waste and abuse, but for the most part they perform a necessary service of checks and balance. But, the way corrupt leaders control government agencies that perform these audits is by not funding the Agencies. The SEC which audits the industry and Wall Street stock market are not adequately funded, they cannot hire enough qualified agents to perform the annual audits. Some of the wealthy will always find ways to make money through corrupt means, and one of the ways is to deregulate, and rob this country blind every other 8 years, while keeping the low and middle class fighting about non issues. Do you remember how the talking heads tried to initially blame the America people for the financial meltdown on people buying homes they could not afford? This meltdown was caused by banks investing for enormous profits while at the same time loaning money to these companies. The Wall Street Mortgage derivative with was the biggest Ponzi scheme in the world, by continually selling unregulated bungled stocks at higher and higher prices until the bubble busted. But, before it burst numerous wealthy people stole billions and billions of dollars.

  • Mayor Bloomberg, you accomplished some good things for New York City and true you have the experience. But, eight years is enough time for any political leader, and you should pass the torch and orchestra from the sidelines or higher offices. If you did not mentor people for this position shame on you! The power of “owning NYC” is a powerful aphrodisiac, but this can also breed inappropriate compromises, corruption and contempt.

The NYC council given themselves the authority to extend term limits to 3 four year terms is an assault on democracy. The appropriate action would have been a special election by the people of NYC in 2007 for this extension. Your last minute coupe de tat with the NYC council is the ultimate display arrogance and what is wrong with politicians. The argument of needing you in these economic times is weak, NYC is the heart and center of the de-regulation fiasco and you turned a blind eye to the greed of your industry partners and Wall Street parasites. Politicians should lead for the good of the American people and not bottom line profits of corporations

  • i believe in a goal that for righteousness and for the people .higher learning brings,a higher count of responsibility to have productive self sufficient families, stronger economy, more prosperous way of thinking and living.i am also please to know that all of america is being aware of, and putting effort into saving our quality of life supplies, with thinking green. put the thought in effect so we can breath green and live healthy happy loving lives full of knowledge and understanding of Global functions.

  • So will these community colleges and universities be offering more programs in entrepreneurship? How do we develop this entrepreneurial spirit in our young people will you encourage the development of more entrepreneurial programs at the elementary and high school level to foster those kinds of skills at at early age. How will the community help to foster this kind of spirit in your young people. Will we have more programs where actual entrepreneurs meet with young people mentor them and inspire them?
