Dear President Obama,

Do you really want to be the new "war president"? If you go to West Point tomorrow night (Tuesday, 8pm) and announce that you are increasing, rather than withdrawing, the troops in Afghanistan, you are the new war president. Pure and simple. And with that you will do the worst possible thing you could do -- destroy the hopes and dreams so many millions have placed in you. With just one speech tomorrow night you will turn a multitude of young people who were the backbone of your campaign into disillusioned cynics. You will teach them what they've always heard is true -- that all politicians are alike. I simply can't believe you're about to do what they say you are going to do. Please say it isn't so.

It is not your job to do what the generals tell you to do. We are a civilian-run government. WE tell the Joint Chiefs what to do, not the other way around. That's the way General Washington insisted it must be. That's what President Truman told General MacArthur when MacArthur wanted to invade China. "You're fired!," said Truman, and that was that. And you should have fired Gen. McChrystal when he went to the press to preempt you, telling the press what YOU had to do. Let me be blunt: We love our kids in the armed services, but we f*#&in' hate these generals, from Westmoreland in Vietnam to, yes, even Colin Powell for lying to the UN with his made-up drawings of WMD (he has since sought redemption).

So now you feel backed into a corner. 30 years ago this past Thursday (Thanksgiving) the Soviet generals had a cool idea -- "Let's invade Afghanistan!" Well, that turned out to be the final nail in the USSR coffin.

There's a reason they don't call Afghanistan the "Garden State" (though they probably should, seeing how the corrupt President Karzai, whom we back, has his brother in the heroin trade raising poppies). Afghanistan's nickname is the "Graveyard of Empires." If you don't believe it, give the British a call. I'd have you call Genghis Khan but I lost his number. I do have Gorbachev's number though. It's + 41 22 789 1662. I'm sure he could give you an earful about the historic blunder you're about to commit.

With our economic collapse still in full swing and our precious young men and women being sacrificed on the altar of arrogance and greed, the breakdown of this great civilization we call America will head, full throttle, into oblivion if you become the "war president." Empires never think the end is near, until the end is here. Empires think that more evil will force the heathens to toe the line -- and yet it never works. The heathens usually tear them to shreds.

  • UNITED NATIONS !
  • I agree and don't agree completely, Yes there are many complex problems and *corruption in international affairs. The U.S. will not be effective' until these {proper}organizational structures and frameworks are implemented{properly} and strict-reforms are put in place.

These structures and international frameworks were put in place for a specific reason, and many of these channels need monumental reforms to properly & adequately benefit "civil Democratic interest abroad", and yes there is problems with international structures and *corruption, conflicting interest, conflicts and divisions' among "members states and governments" but that's the reason for these democratic structures doing all with-the-hopes of greater coexistence, or getting beyond what uniquely divides us, among all our willingness to conflict and "stand divided" / within those divisions "civil interest" must win the day, (if) there is to be a "promising future" for any.

    Some real coexistence!

    The "UNITED NATION" forever: perseverance!

  • We will thinbetter of president Obama if he just shows the leadership and pulls out of Afganistan.
  • To borrow a phrase from Ron Paul's presidential campaign: "We just marched in, we can just march home."

It's as simple as that. For anyone that thinks that an exit strategy is anything more than that, I feel very sorry for you.
  • "I agree" to an extent, not wholey: SECURITY in the world is critically important, but the United States approach is not wholey "filled with justice/ capitalism has gone wrong in business and politics: the United States must couple it's power with soft-power, and all the channels given to it in the international forum must be honed to it's benefit: {peace keeping forces} and a United-Effort in world affairs' with (all) member states and government in the league of nations contributing to a better world community./ The U.S. needs the proper framework to be affective Globally.
  • aaa
  • True facts is a sexist sociopath with a heterosexist disease. The fact that you celebrate patriarchy and the subjugation of women as political tools of prowess is bullsh*t.
    • He also has homo-sex on the brain at all times. In his world, a man is either a "top" or a "bottom" which pretty much means he can't see eye-to-eye with any other man without being consternated about homo-sex.

He needs to understand, some men are neither a "top", nor a "bottom", nor interested in sex with other men. He can't conceive of that, which suggests he's a latent bi-sexual, if not gay.

And he's insisting the same of the president because President Obama doesn't meet the expectations of his radical, angst-driven agenda.
    • Also, patriarchal and matriarchal cultures are not good or bad, they are what they are. Also, they're not necessarily mutually-exclusive. Balance and stability is what people like best.
  • So a combination of reaction against the success of government and disenfranchisement enabled large criminal organizations. And the larger the organization the greater probability of success for their endeavors.

    Fascism or elitism or Republicanism

If the new jobs curve lags behind the technology curve then technology feeds criminality and not productivity.

The bankers large salaries must indicate the complexity and responsibility of their work. However, the relatively low value achieved from such a high reward must indicate that too much responsibility has been bundled into the banking profession and the salaries are in need of a break up as additional jobs to alleviate the performance stress of the bankers.

[The airplane changed the game. It meant a guy without an education who instead had an artistic talent could tour the nation and sell out stadiums. Along with recording royalties, entertainment was making popular millionaires, and the gentry hated the nouveau rich. They must tighten their grip to outpace the popular millionaires.

That's what happened to America. Covetousness and envy.]
  • We can't afford to allow any of our enemies to control the central Asia drug trade. So either we need to control the cash cow, build a legitimate state un-needful of it, or destroy it. #3 is out, the DEA can't be an effective force on the other side of the globe, #1 isn't what America is about but for better or for worse such options were the reason intelligence was created, and so isn't escalation the President's only real option in Afghanistan?

...ok, remember when you went to your friends house as a kid and broke something and your parents paid for it. In waging war you have a responsibility to ensure that the sacrifice was purposeful and with reason and reward. A responsibility as a servant of an almighty God to both your enemy and yourself. The United States broke it, or you could argue they broke something in our house and refused to pay. But even then we went ape sh*t and wrecked their whole house and need to make amends.

Something not right about saying we went over there to scare the sh*t out of people because we ourselves were afraid of the actions of a couple of dozen men.

Without knowing intelligence information we must trust our elected leaders. I know politicians must have a love/hate relationship with the internet because it suggests a popular governance. It can be both source of good ideas, and cacophony of idiocy. Republicanism indicates that as the very cogs of the machine of government that they, the elected officials, are privy to special insight permitting prudent judgment.
  • Corruption is the foil of government. However, in practice government seems the weaker of the two. Governments need to abide by the rules they create. Criminals livelihood is the breaking of those same rules. So in that criminals don't have to follow the multitude of rules that are our laws do that have an advantage. [Their disadvantage is that they lack absolute leadership because effective leadership requires universal and unchallenged rules.] Hence were intelligence agencies created whereby an invisible portion of government could operate outside her rules.

The magnitude of the drug trade and its profitability insists that the world's intelligence agencies try to take it over such that a profit that is otherwise illicit and adversarial becomes an asset.

Government in it's complexity has had to become invisible, and this invisibility is the root of fascism.
  • I agree with michael, Mr. President you said you would get them out of there. I'm still proud to have you as MY President. I know your not the President that does as hes told and not think for yourself. Look deep in your heart and find a way to get them out of there. Don't send any more to Afghanistan.
  • "Pulling up our skirts"!?!? What an idiotic statement. So why were we in Iraq?!?!? Sorry "troops". You're not dying for a worthy cause or my freedom. Hell, me freedom in in jeopardy from our very own elected officials. That goes for the troops too. I didn't vote for Obama because I knew he would be the sacrificial lamb. He's just a fall guy and a patsy. The sad part is he knew this when he signed up for it. In the end he will be blamed for it all and people will accredit it to him being a negro. Have any of you thought for a second that maybe the president doesn't have the real authority to end wars? Especially when corporations make so much money from them. Look at what happened to Kennedy when he was about the end the war in Vietnam. Look at what happened to King when he started speaking out against it. Barack is an Israeli puppet. He has no power. And he is no different than his distant relatives who just left office.
