6 Months Since The Haiti Earthquake And Where's The Rebuilding?

Posted July 12, 2010 by admin for Global Grind Staff

It’s been six months since the Haiti earthquake and the question that everyone wants to know is when will the country be rebuilt? Millions of Haitians have been displaced from their homes, rubble and collapsed buildings still overlook the city of Port au Prince and about 1.2 million Haitians still occupy the tent camps, without enough food, with barely enough water. The international community sent over $1 billion in aid to help Haitian communities recover. How has the money been spent?

The situation in Haiti isn’t getting better; reports of rape in tent cities only impeded the process of progression in the region. Haiti has turned into a case of human violation and not a case for reconstruction. Living in tent city pose high risk for women and children, according to Jayne Fleming, a human rights lawyer who has visited Haiti on several occasions’ report that; “women are at increased risk of violence and rape because they cannot lock their doors at night. Children are at increased risk of abduction, trafficking and prostitution because they are living in the streets.” Rape and sexual assault are well-known threats in Haiti's tent cities, where lack of security and little light at night leave women and girls vulnerable.

If nothing is seemingly being done at the six month mark how will Haiti look one year from now?
