The recent tragic death of Tyler Clementi touches upon many unresolved issues today. The Rutgers student, a victim of anti-gay bullying committed suicide surprising the public despite the cry for help that he had posted on his Facebook which most of his classmates overlooked.
In light of the Tyler Clementi’s death, many public figures have taken it upon themselves to speak up against bullying and homophobia. The event reflects upon more than anti-gay harassment and highlights the problem of bullying in general that is becoming a serious problem among young kids, Tyler Clementi’s death is only one of many other lives cut short due to such senseless discrimination.
According to National Mental Health Asociation, GLBT students are definitely a target of harassment at schools, “because their distress is a direct result of the hatred and prejudice that surround them.”
Ellen Degeneres announces that “There are messages everywhere that validate this kind of bullying and taunting, and we have to make it stop. We can’t let intolerance and ignorance take another kid’s life.” She highlights that there were at least 4 recent deaths caused by bullying and reminds us how heartbreaking it is to witness these events.
