Candidates Ignore the Black Press

Owners and operators of African-American media outlets throughout the country have just about had it with the Barack Obama campaign. Yes, they acknowledge the Illinois senator to be the darling of the race — the exalted Great Black Hope, the charismatic champion of change who is making history for the ages as he mounts a formidable bid to become the nation’s first black president. But they chafe at his campaign officials’ insensitivity to, and total disregard of, the folks who brought him this far and whom he needs to take him through the White House door: Black people. Publishers and editors of African-American newspapers — the beacons who live and breathe the blackness of their communities and who regulate the pulse of black America — are fighting mad . . .

  • Yeah, what CubanChica said.

The notion that Black people have brought BO "this far" is ridiculous. Neither party gives half a shizzle about the so called "Black vote" for precisely the reason we're so quick to proudly tout. "We are not a monolith". Translation: we do not get behind anyone or anything in a block or unified manner and there is no power in that, therefore nobody's going out of their way to pander strictly to us.

We can't have it both ways, and need to stop whining about who's not showing up to our "parties", when we're not even showing up.
  • @Geronimo Sorry, not suggesting that all White people or Hispanics vote as a single block, much the same way that Blacks don't.

What I am saying is that this line is a bit of hyperbole: But they chafe at the campaign officials' insensitivity to, and total disregard of, the folks who brought him this far and whom he needs to take him through the White House door. Black people.

Again, last I checked the polling numbers, the amount of Black people that allowed him to win Wisconsin or Iowa were negligible.

That sort of line doesn't really speak to the message that Obama has been trying to instill/sell. Plus it's false because Obama won't win the primary OR the general election with only the Black vote, even if every Black person was going to vote for him, which again they aren't. For example, Bob Johnson sure isn't.
  • Considering the amount of money that has been raised and spent to support Barack and Hilary it’s afizzleng shame that very little has trickled down to independent, Black-owned radio and print. Both are being strangled and locked-out of these money pots as a result of media consolidation.

The decision was made easily, economically speaking. Advertisers (yes, Barack & Hilary are advertisers – they are trying to get us to buy their shizzle) can reach more black folks with ONE buy across Viacom (BET, MTV, VH1,CBS) and The CW, than they would advertising on EVERY Black Newspaper, Radio Station AND Ebony & Jet. They will reach us where we are. Since we prefer to consume Stepin’ Fetchit images found on BET and that God-awful Flava of Love.

Perhaps John McCain and the Repubelicans will take advantage of this opportunity – black media is having a fire sale - to show Black folks why they should be on the Republican Coalition Train to the Promised Land. Surely, the Whites and Hispanics already onboard will move over to make room for the BAPWIAC folks.
  • @ CubanChica

Are you lumping Hispanics and Whites together as a monolith? Talk about crossing over, how strange…

I had no idea there was a White monolith and now I find out there’s also an Hispanic monolith. I wonder if the Dominicans and Venezuelans are aware of these new developments. And what about the Haitians, is there a Monolith they can join or would they be included in the quickly developing Black/African/Prieto/West Indian American/Creolito Monolith (BAPWIAC)?

But that’s a different discussion for a different day.
  • Well, Hallelujah and sing His praises. The Black community is FINALLY waking up to the fact that the Democratic Party doesn't give a darn about them. BTW, the Black press can be as angry as they want, but the truth is that without the White and Hispanic vote, it doesn't really matter if every Black person voted for Obama. And we all know all Black Americans aren't going to vote for him anyway.
  • Politicians are very two-faced.
