As many of you know I practice yoga everyday.  What some of you may not know is that classic yoga is an 8-step process and that most American yoga studios teach just one of the 8 steps.  The place where I go to practice the 3rd step, asana (poses), also teaches the other 7 steps, so when you go to class with me, you get a full experience…lots of chanting and discussions of god consciousness.  So it is safe to say that these yoga zealots whom I practice with are deeply invested in their spiritual-selves.  No one comes to the studio unless they want to better themselves spiritually.

So, over the weekend, I went to my normal practice in the city and while bent over in uttanasana, I noticed a cute, little, short girl whose hands were not placed properly.  When you do a complete forward bend, your fingers and your toes should go ten across on the floor, not the hands in front of the feet.  I offered my help, which she thanked me for and she then moved on.  Later, while doing a twisting triangle, I noticed again that she needed a little direction.  So about an hour later when the class was over, she thanked me for the guidance and introduced herself as Ashley Dupré.  I said to myself, “Oh my god, this 5 foot, 1 inch god-seeker was the $4000 "escort" of Governor Elliot Spitzer.”  Before I could speak, she said “I’ve seen you here many times.  This is my favorite place and I’ve been coming here regularly since I’ve moved back into the city, and have been practicing yoga for about a year.  Yoga saved my life.”  I had seen her in class before, but never said anything to her.  We spoke for a few more minutes and I was curious to find out about how her “business” was going and was she benefiting from all of the exposure.  She told me that she hadn’t taken a nickel since the scandal broke and the reason was because every deal that had come in front of her involved further destroying her spirit.  It is almost impossible for a 23-year-old girl, like her, or anyone for that matter, to be able to resist the temptation of further exploiting yourself when they are throwing money in your face – like Penthouse and Hustler, who offered a video component as well for millions of dollars.  She said these things are not her.  They are her experiences, but not her.  I said that it is amazing to see that you’re in yoga and trying so hard to lift yourself up.  She wants to write a book, but the dilemma is that most publishers are too blind to see that people are more interested in her personal, honest evolution, rather than the exploitive tell-all.  She told me that she wants to tell her real story, a story that she feels could inspire a thirteen year old girl and make her proud of her own path. A story of personal transformation.

This is what I promote within Global Grind – giving people, like Ashley, the vehicle to tell their story, their way.  I look forward to reading her blog, which will be posted tomorrow…where she can finally start to tell her story, on her terms.

  • The whole woman is insidious. She knew the governor had plans to be the president of the the US. She would have held her in ransom if the FBI didt wiretapp his phone. Why did Russel Simmons give him a forum? Are going to have some 15 min millionaires? like Paris Hilton and Kimd Kid. She claims to have 'got the governor' immedietly the news broke. Simmons you have bad rap (Read Bossip and Media takeout) thats a different story.

  • Ms Dupre was the victim of human trafficking. Many will say that she made her own choice. But conditions of poverty, unemployment, addictions of various types, discrimination, unhealthy relationships and many other factors so tilt the playing field of life against women that it is impossible to assert that they have the same freedom of choice that men in society take for granted.

At 21 much of her sense of self and free will was already robbed from her by the time she decided to work for the escort service. These "services" are simply white collar pimping operations. Their goal is to induce women to have sex for the pimps profit, not for human warmth, intimacy nor even a woman's own sexual pleasure.

Once she become a sex commodity, all sense of humane choice vanished. Young women are led to believe that this is no different than having sex with a guy they met at a party, except you get paid for it.

But once your body becomes an instrument of commerce the law of the marketplace takes over and the notion that you are operating from free will becomes a hollow illusion--part of the psychological defense that becomes more and more necessary to ward off serious depression, or worse.

Thankfully there are organizations like the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women available for young women to help end this trauma . Sadly, Mr. Spitser apologized to his wife, his family and to the voters. But did he ever apologize to you for using you like a thing, rather than another human being? If he hasn't, then let me apologize to you on behalf of all the men of this country because we, men and women have not yet achieved real equality for our mothers, sisters, wives and daughters. And let me invite you to join with like minded people at CATW to work for that day when no woman will ever be prostituted.

    • Beautifully said on behalf of all women and men alike. Victor is truly a warm hearted and honest man.

I also have a yoga apparel concept that I would like for you to check out..By any chance do you have and internships for Phat Farm?? Im always willing to learn more about fashion...Thank You and God Bless.
  • Im not jealous & Russ I am not mad at you for what you do. Infact I stated elsewhere that I admire what you do and the good that you see in other people. Maybe it's human nature for me to be a little bothered that I struggled my way through life...

Life for me ain't been no crystal stair.

    It's had tacks in it,

    And splinters,

    And boards torn up,

And places with no carpet on the floor --

    Bare.

    But all the time

    I'se been a-climbin' on,

    And reachin' landin's,

    And turnin' corners,

And sometimes goin' in the dark

Where there ain't been no light.

So boy, don't you turn back.

Don't you set down on the steps

'Cause you finds it's kinder hard.

    Don't you fall now --

    For I'se still goin', honey,

    I'se still climbin',

And life for me ain't been no crystal stair.

    • Awww man!! "Dream Differed" I love that poem too!! But this is a classic Langston Hughes Piece!!

      Keep The Arts Alive!!
    • :)

What happens to a dream deferred?

      Does it dry up

like a raisin in the sun?

      Or fester like a sore--

      And then run?

Does it stink like rotten meat?

      Or crust and sugar over--

      like a syrupy sweet?

      Maybe it just sags

      like a heavy load.

      Or does it explode?

    • THIS IS MY FAVORITE ONE...

      Dreams

      By Langston Hughes

      Hold fast to dreams

      For if dreams die

      Life is a broken-winged bird

      That cannot fly.

      Hold fast to dreams

      For when dreams go

      Life is a barren field

      Frozen with snow.

    • THIS IS MY ABSOLUTE MOST FAVORITE!

      Our Deepest Fear

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.

Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.

We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?

Actually, who are you not to be?

You are a child of God.

Your playing small does not serve the world.

There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.

We are all meant to shine, as children do.

We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.

It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

      Marianne Williamson

    • Well....? There you go!! Listen to her poem, you have that light too!! Whatever you went through growing up in Harlem shouldn't stop your "light" from shining!! I think we all should read that poem every morning to remind us that our past was just a path to find that ligh switch, now we just gotta turn it on!!
  • on my way to air[port got fundraiser for the art programs in schools (rush philantropic art foundation) this weekend need to do media tp promote it.... the charity scene is a mess not to be negative but it seems that the
first thing to go with some of my super rich friends is their investment in kids or charities so i gotta work twice as hard just to fund the programs we are already commited to ( same programs we support every year) this economic crisis makes rich some people neortic an most people really sacrifice i will not be flying private :-) oh yeah i just read ashlys blog i guess it will up first thing this morning have a blessed day

    • We can only live our own journeys Russ. We can only operate within our own facalties and live our lives according to the decisions we make. Our decisions put us in situations that we continue to use our facalties to work through. Your's put you in your yoga class with that honey, and it put you in the situation to feel her spirit the way you did. No one else had that experience and it's a blessing that you have a vehicle to share it. That is nothing that warrants an apology, a further clarification, or a further explanation.

If you draw what you draw out of the people you meet, so be it. Whoever they are and whatever they've done should not be the only barometer we use to judge them by. Let's remember, a mass media theory is filtering. In other words, narrowing a person or situation down to palatable portions so that we can draw easy conclusions as to who they are. We never get the whole person. So let's not be so quick to judge these people by what the media put's out about them. Let's at least be willing to hear what they have to say. Everyone should have the opportunity to share their story from their perspective, and that is what this Global Grind thing is offering. I'm glad it's available so I'm gonna support it to the limit.
    • Russell, a simple quote I received from your brothers daily word the other day sums it all up.

What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us... -Emerson

You have a good spirit my man, take care

      Jay

    • What would Rev Run say about Ashley???
  • Looking forward to the blog!!
  • I bet you Spitzer choked her ass and had rough sex with her just like he do all the tricks he sleep with. He like to role play when having sex and he prefer that these hookers try to defend theirselves knowing dag gone well that he can overpower these women. He screws with his socks on and there's nothing really new that she can tell me about her experience that hasn't already happened before. Intriguing? NOT!
  • I feel sorry for Stacey Patton a product of the New Jersey Foster Care System that was adopted by a monster that tried to break her spirit. Instead, she wrote a book, THAT MEAN OLD YESTERDAY.
    • i feel you thats news and i feel sorry for alot of things the 18 thousand africans who died yesterday for lack of clean water i work for them but no one read that blog
  • I wish the streets were as forgiving to me as they are for the Ashley's and the Kim Ks and the Aubrey's of the world. Why should they be tho, Im just a poor little black girl from Harlem.
    • I'm sure you're a beautiful, surviving Harlem Queen and you deserve THE BEST... Keep it positive! Keep your head up!!
    • Thanks ;)
    • Well you answered you own question!! It's not forgivness or redemption they have received from the public, it acceptance and tolerance due to their staus and place in the world!! To be honest with you neither one of them(Kim K or this Ashley chick) Has done anything to the extent of helpiing people through the mistakes they've made!! Then and only then will you receive piece of mind!!

Let's keep it funky!! It's not like these women donated the money they've earned from their sex scandals either!! So their not all that sorry!! But you keep being that strong black woman from Harlem, and they can't stop you!! I mean hell, they haven't already!!
  • I just checked homegirl out. She's BANGIN'! I know why you helped her with those moves homie! You were about to practice a little yoga on her lol... and I ain't mad at you. If she was in my yoga class I would try and hit it too. So I'll be here tomorrow to check her blog out and I hope she sends a flick along with it
  • Hey Ashley, what's up with the music? Can we hear something on here?
  • did you hit it?
