Scratching The Surface In South Africa

A few years ago, I founded the Diamond Empowerment Fund (D.E.F.)
(www.diamondempowerment.org) to raise support of education initiatives in African nations where diamonds are a natural resource. Most people that know about D.E.F. think of the Simmons Jewelry Co's Green Bracelet, the symbol of our cause worn by many celebrities, athletes, and a few politicians. That's great, and every time I see someone wearing it I am happy to know it's out
there getting seen and making a difference.

But sometimes even I forget how important the cause is since there are so many needs in the world, not to mention in Africa. D.E.F. is supporting two programs - CIDA City Campus and African Leadership Academy - both based in Johannesburg, South Africa. CIDA is the first virtually free business college in South Africa with almost 1000 students from very difficult circumstances and most coming from extreme poverty. African Leadership Academy is based in South Africa, but has set its sights on transforming the continent by helping talented and driven students from throughout Africa get the top education that will help them fulfill the promise of their God-given talents by getting a world-class education.

Plain and simple, both of these programs are about access to resources. I promise you - you will be hard pressed to find young people who are as focused, determined, and grateful for opportunity as the students of CIDA and ALA. They deserve to be able to get an education and chase their dreams
with a chance of catching them. Read this important report from the NY Times which gives us some insight into the challenges and opportunities for South African youth. Reminds me we are just scratching the surface.

  • Hi Russell
I am a South African woman, from Cape Town. I would just like to send out a heart felt thanks for all you are doing for the young people of Africa. I am very proud of alot of young South Africans who when given the chance, have shown to be very committed to bettering their lives. I am currently in Italy for health reasons and will be returning to S.A soon . I am ready and rearing to continue to business in making body products. Although Europe is beautiful and i have been learning alot here, there is something that i have been homesick for. I am homesick for the awesome energy of Africa and the South African people. It's a raw energy that's full of diversity, struggle, hope, and creativity. But it's an energy that makes you feel alive as you never know how your life will change one day from the other. I think our tourism slogan says it best. South Africa alive with possibility.
Thank you for helping so many take that raw energy and transform it into something beautiful.

    Deepest affection
    Tarryn

  • I found a great dating site_______WealthyFish.com________. The best dating club for seeking the rich singles, sexy beauties and even hot celebs.. what's the most important is that you dont have to be a millionaire.but you can meet one. I think everyone need to meet some miracle after all the terrible stuff in the news and the economy.
What's kind of relationship do you want?
  • Any time any one any where is helped it affects the whole. Quantum physics has proven this, Ancient Wisdom revealed it, yet the western world thinking continues in separation thinking (because that is the belief system we were raised/programed in). Thinking is changing, actions are being taken (as the post and some of the comments have revealed) in this direction. The works of Bruce Lipton and Greg Braden are beginning to be taken seriously, as they should be. A 'new kid on the block,' so to speak, that has important ramifications to change and remedy is Heart Forgiveness/Core Health. These processes are a serious path to the change we all are so desperately seeking around the globe. I invite anyone interested in achievable, measurable, lasting emotional changes and limitation lifting movement to check this phenomenal joy bringing, peace evolving creation: www.heartforgiveness.us & www.corehealth.us

    Keep the faith!
  • Our company is a small entity based in South Africa and Swaziland. We have amongst us a lot of skills to share with the youth. How do we patner with DEF to create more organisations like CEDA?

Our website with contact is www.kpltraining.co.za
  • I love this article - these students you can see love to learn. My best students so far were a set of mentally challenged students who came in every day eager to learn. I just love to teach kids who are eager to learn and grow.
It pains me for students in SA, many of us have opportunities here in the US and take it for granted and others like these students pray for opportunities. I am so proud of Oprah and her school despite the challenges she has faced. She is giving hope to the next generation of black female leaders in SA. Yes, good teacher training appears lacking there like in many other developing countries and those that are talented often leave causing a brain drain.

What's the solution - I don't know but it good that we are even talking about it. Education seems to be on the back burner of many.

Thank God for Barack and Michelle Obama who show that education can be an avenue (not the only one) for advancement. I am so proud of Michelle and what she represents for young black girls who have never seen successful ivy league educated black woman. She proves it can be done. I only wish BET and other media would feature some of these women more in our communities.
  • First of all I commend you on your work with D.E.F. In fact, I will be in Dallas to support the Diamond Empowerment Fund for it stands for a cause that I truly believe in. Please keep up the good work, this is amazing.

I really beg to differ on the sentiment that you are helping children in Africa and yet not helping people locally in the U.S.

To those who feel that way, please note that the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation is primarily focused on " providing disadvantaged urban youth with significant arts exposure, access and education as well as providing exhibition opportunities to early and mid-career artists and artists of color." Check out http://www.rushphilanthropic.org of which Uncle Rush is heavily involved. In fact if we were all paying attention Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation and Bounty formed a partnership to further assist disadvantaged children in the U.S. http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Russell-Simmons-Kicks-Off-prnews-2027282471.html?x=0&.v=1.

So although Mr.Simmons has been involved locally for a good while and now has decided to broaden his outreach to others who are less priveleged in other countries; instead of us commending him we are complaining.

UncleRush cannot help everyone in this world but he is certainly making an imprint one foundation at a time. Let us practice selflessness and be thankful for his work because there are other artists/ celebrities who are not even interested in helping a single person...at least he cares. And if he doesn't care at all, the end result is more important than the motive to me.

I believe children in the U.S. and other continents are all very grateful nonetheless for they are all being given an opportunity to develop themselves into the future leaders of tomorrow.

With all do respect, let us all keep ourselves informed before we make comments that are not consistent with what is really happening.
  • DID YOU HEAR ABOUT NIGERIA BANNING THE MOVIE DISTRICT 9?.. i WONDERED WHY. YOU HAVE SUCH A GOOD FORMAT IN WRITING~ YOUR SKILL SEEMS SO effortless.. DICTION N ALL. A WONDERFUL MOTIVATOR YOU ARE. VERY, VERY INSPIRATIONAL.
  • Celebrities wont go to inner cities unless it benefits them in a big way. There are a few that are of the exception, but how many these days do you see helping out someone in Queens?

Its "cooler" to help out some kids in a remote country that could care less about the US. Because despite what people think, they really do hate us. They only act nice on camera to get whatever they can.

    Sad but true.
  • Keep up the good work, Russell and you too Ellen. Ive purchased two last year. I will be popularizing it here in Kansas City,Mo.
  • Russell everything that you do is amazing ! I just don't understand why don't you come to local cities and help people like me ? Just because were not across the world it's people like us deserve a chance too! Some poor people in the city or ghetto want things out of life want to go back to school and get a good job. Some of us have hard times too it's hard for a lot of us sometimes it feel like were in countries like that just because we can live better don't mean we are and sometimes it's not our fault.Rich people kills me how they pick and choose yes it's your money and you can do what you want but dam help us too ! It's not easy as rich people say keep smiling, keep your head up , knock down doors how when you can't get a basic job it's no jobs here ! What if a person did all that and their life crashed at a drop of a dime because they got sick healthcare is taking every dime ! Once people made it they look at people in need as crazy ,they need to work or a handout no some people done all of that sometimes people need a hand up ! In a few days I will be in the dark with four kids not because I didn't work or try because I got sick and it change my life forever ! It's poor people everywhere help us too please ! I no you may say who am I NOBODY but I'm crying out for help I want to work, school and try my best to do something else all I no is the ghetto how can I make a move when I can't pay a light bill tell me please !At night you can sleep good and have no worries but at night the poor all over will be in the dark in a corner wishing and praying somebody here them just one person that willgive a helping hand !Pray for me please it could happen to us all !
  • thank you for your work, Russell -- this is very important...great to see you have a global view
