When we think of Minister Louis Farrakhan, we often think about the man who helped guide Muhammad Ali or the man who came up together in the Nation of Islam with Malcolm X. Do we ever think he's the man who helped hundreds of thousands (or even millions) of black people to love themselves? Well, we should.

When I grew up in Hollis, Queens there was a rehab, a mosque and a “Steak n' Take” on my corner, all of which where run by the Nation of Islam. There was also a heroin epidemic on that corner that was killing off our teenagers and young adults. Our parents would tell us that when we grow up we should make a choice to either join the army or "be a Muslim or something.” The Nation of Islam secured our housing projects, promoted dignity and transformed men with criminal pasts. Those men would then, in turn, raise refined, educated black children. Hard to dispute this. It took guys off the street and created a powerful, non-violent movement. The Nation of Islam has never been associated with any form of violence and always been about uplifting our communities and making a better future for black people. If you ask anyone from my generation, from any ghetto in this country, I promise you they have roughly the same experiences regarding the Nation's presence in their communities.

Certainly some of their preachers were fiery, especially in their pointing out the evils of white supremacy. They said some things in a way that was hard for most whites and some blacks to digest. For example, “THE WHITE MAN IS THE DEVIL.” We have to remember the climate of the country during this time. It was an all out war and the Nation was not about to back-down. The Nation of Islam, which was started by Elijah Muhammad and a white man named, Master Fard Muhammad, always pointed out that one day we would all live in harmony. Although this still isn't quite true, their message under the leadership of Minister Louis Farrakhan has evolved to fit the time.

It is true that some blacks are still not “free” and stuck in a slave mentality, due to the lingering affects of 400+ years of slavery. It is the recognition of this condition that the Nation continues its important work in ghettos across America, giving steady doses of spirituality or sense of higher self to many men and women who need it.

This past week, it was my honor to host the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan at my apartment in NYC. He was joined by his sons Louis Jr., Mustapha and Joshua Farrakhan, along with their personal chef and at least 75 security personnel. It was quite a scene to see how they set up shop at my apartment. This was a week where I didn't miss my 6am prayer because I could hear them already awake and ready to start the day off  right. This was a week where the word "Allah" was on the tip of everyone's tongue. And was a very special time when I got to hang with my “second dad” and my other brothers. We reminisced about the three marches where more than three million people marched on Washington. We talked about how we brought Snoop, Ice Cube and other LA rappers together with members of the east coast rap community and how he helped mediate the beef between 50 Cent and Ja Rule and countless other instances where he was there to help hip hop. And of course we talked about his keynote address at the hip hop summit that created the Hip Hop Summit Action network. We even mentioned a subject that the Minister doesn't care to discuss, his legacy. He has talked about the oneness of god for years, about the sameness of all religion and all people. He has given his followers spiritual roadmaps to happiness on Earth his whole life. I want future generations to know him as I do, so I am working to have his thoughts on this subject made into a book. I believe that his memoirs are going to be one of the most interesting and inspiring autobiographies ever written.

So that is my goal.

If America can know his heart, it will inspire millions of Americans for generations to come. It will happen with or without me, but I just thought writing this would be a good karmic expression for me, and a chance to reflect on a very special few days in my life.

  • When i think of minister farrakhan i think of how he is the most beautiful man in this universe, i have yet to see another human being with his love when i mention the word love referencing minister farrakhan reaches the soul of a human being you cant help but to love this man. I wish i had enough money to make a movie of his life show the world what we have been given as a gift from the lord of the worlds that is so big, cant you see. He is the answer to all our problems he was made to teach us like no other his love, wisdom his charisma, his mind is so powerful he knows what his people need to get us up out this sick mindset of inferiority and he helps us to see ourselves in the proper light. He is the solution to our problem, He deserves to be commended in every way. Some one should make a movie of his life to show his divine purpose in the proper light. From his birth to the his presence and his journey in his to come into existance to help his teacher The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad to give birth to a righteous army of god. Thank you for posting the minister on your site he should be on every site in america.
  • I love the Minister, and his words placed on him by ALLAH has changed my life. I am grateful I lived in this time.
  • Nice to see the Minisiter portrayed in such an open, honest and positive light. I hope Mr Simmons' book on 'The Great Teacher' will try to reconcile and shed light on the split between the Nation and highlight the differences between them and Orthodox and Sunni Muslims.

As a black American Muslim that was an NOI supporter (but not in the movement as I'm orthodox), I feel that most black people come to Islam through the Nation, directly or indirectly, like myself. If there was no Honorable Elijah Muhammad, there would have been no Brother Malcolm or Brother Minister and there most certainly have not been many black Americans coming to Allah. Back in my day, Muslim Africans don't teach ANYTHING about Islam to black people - we were just a market for them to sell 'cultural' stuff to. Pakistanis owned all the midrange and cheap hotels in the south and were racist as hell and Arabs???? They owned the stores that sold alcohol, cigarettes by the stick and allowed drugs to be sold in their stores. Hell, I didn't even know any Arabs until the US government started harrassing them and rounding their butts up after 9-11! I'm sure they are all our 'friends' now everyone mixes freely in the mosques and all is cool with the brotherhood and that's good.

I would just like to see an accurate history of Islam in black America written by someone with the influence and money to keep the story real.

  • I know this was a blessing to have the Minister with you, I have been a believer for several years now and my work has been because of the Minister and the love we share for our people. I am the founder &Preisdent of a grassroot organization, Women Who NEVER Give Up, we are a priosn reform and sentencing reform advocay group of family members who have love ones in the prison system. This work I do has been a life work after the death of my Husband who died in priosn. He was a FOI in the NOI.. I am also very proud of your work as well, You have been a example of what you can do when you never give up!! Be Blessed my Brotha!! our web site www.wwng.org

    Peace and Blessing!!
  • Peace Bro. Russell* Your article on Dear Apostle is VERY touching- Although I was born in the Tomkin projects in Bklyn, NY,I grew up, for the most part, in Rosedale, Queens, NY, not far away from where you grew up. I came into Islam thru the 5%, and graduated from Springfield Gardens HS where Islam was VERY prevalent then. I "discovered" the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan in my freshman year of college @ Syracuse University in the fall of 1982 when the NOI (via Min. Haqq Muhammad & the FOI) came up to show a FARRAKHAN video! Well, beloved, I was there, on post last Weds. @ the UN~ It was POWERFUL!!! And although the mainstream media downplayed the Minister's presence w/ Bro. Muammar Qadhafi, the world shall know that he was present and in support of our brother! (smile) Thank you for aiding Dear Apostle!!!! Thank you for helping to trumpet his truth!!

    Peace,

  • seen ya pic in dayton ohio on corner of salem and hillcrest yeah we got something in comand light skin and chuck dees.
  • Brother Russell,

I have read in the articles that featured your response to the ADL pertaining to your relationship to Brother Minister Farrakhan. For that response I have the uptmost respect for you ,and what you stand for.

Brother Minister Farrakhan is the only Black Leader including President Obama that has stayed the course ,no matter whom or what.In my opinion that is a real man and a true leader.

Black people are so fooled by these fake leaders that are given to us by our open enemies. If time was taken to examine the background of some of these so-called leaders, and who finance them and for what purpose it would blow their minds. These so-called leaders that change every few months based upon the wishes of their financier/financiers.

We that have been blessed to see, and observed Brother Minister Farrakhan for up to 4 decade know that man to be true to his word.He is a man we can all trust and depend on like we did with the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad.I followed Brother Minister Farrakhan on my first trip home(Africa)Ghana for Saviours'Day.I met brothers there became friends and even hosted my Ghanian brother for 10 days at my home.Since that time I have visited him and in him my wife and I have a lifetime friend.I owe that and all countless things of higher value to Brother Minister Farrakhan.

So Russell thanks a million for hostin Brother Minister Farrakhan ,along with his security staff.Your kindness will not go unnoticed by Allah and people that are sincere that is seeking the Truth, and not hype.

    • "Black people are so fooled by these fake leaders that are given to us by our open enemies." - Andr'e X

I don't know who you were thinking of when you wrote "fake leaders".

I'm looking forward to what Minister Farrakhan says next, because I'm sensing good vibes all around.

It's obvious that I'm outside of his primary constituency and I see things from another perspective.

I look up to Russel Simmons for the example he sets as a man, his philosophical mind, executive-class ego, business acumen, and decency as a human.

Russel Simmons looks up to Minister Farrakhan for the reasons he stated above.

Given that this is the case, I keep an open mind to Minister Farrakhan's message as he defines it presently.
  • Those are some kind words about Min Farrakhan. I am curious to know what Min Farrakhan thinks about Mr Simmons calling the NOI founder white.

Farrakhan already has a book where he gets intimate, its called Closing the Gap.

I look forward to the new book though.
  • Thank you brother for these most beautiful words. I bear witness that the Hon Min Louis Farrakhan is a "FATHER" to so many of us.His work and value must be made known. Thank You again and May God's Peace and Blessings continue to be upon you and all that you love.
