Students beware: The summer vacation you just enjoyed could be sharply curtailed if President Barack Obama gets his way.

Obama says American kids spend too little time in school, putting them at a disadvantage with other students around the globe.

"Now, I know longer school days and school years are not wildly popular ideas," the president said earlier this year. "Not with Malia and Sasha, not in my family, and probably not in yours. But the challenges of a new century demand more time in the classroom."

  • i am a student at green dot and i already have to sit in 1 class for 2 hrs extened days i think not...... i already hardley have time for myself but parents think it right because they dont have to go through it
  • Extending hours doesn't make sense.

According to the statistics in the same article, the students here spend more time in school than other nations that are performing better than us. The issue isn't time, its QUALITY OF EDUCATION that's out problem. The teachers now, spend more time getting students prepared for standardized testing rather than TEACHING the material. And we wonder why our education budget increases every year, while our students do worse every year.

Start with seeing what works. This nation's private and home-schooled kids perform much better than kids in public school, and the cost is much lower than what the government pays to keep the system running. Why not take what works from these education systems?

    This isn't a good look.
  • sometimes the popular isn't widely accepted. i think it would give teachers more time to plan out lessons accordingly instead of trying to cram everything into a given amount of time.
  • When I was in high school I was one of the students with extended days. I had extended days because I started taking AP classes in the 10th grade and at the same time I had to take classes that was required to graduate. I don't think it is such a bad idea. To get out of life we have to work for it..We can't expect to be successful and don't put in the work. Also, this might be a way to keep alot of teens off the street.
  • An interesting comment I found somewhere.

If done right, a longer school day might help you enjoy school more. I know that in HS, I was home by 2:30. To fit the classes I needed to take to get into a good college meant that I had to sacrifice taking classes that would be more fun. Obviously, a longer school day isn't an automatic fix but it could be a good start.

For poorer students, a longer school day would mean more engagment on a basic level and more chance to succeed. For the more well off, a longer school day could mean more opportunities to expand your education (just think of all sorts of cool classes students could take if they had the time- a web development class, art class, intense language training, the sociology of gaming)
