The unemployment rate for young Americans has exploded to 52.2 percent -- a post-World War II high, according to the Labor Dept. -- meaning millions of Americans are staring at the likelihood that their lifetime earning potential will be diminished and, combined with the predicted slow economic recovery, their transition into productive members of society could be put on hold for an extended period of time.

And worse, without a clear economic recovery plan aimed at creating entry-level jobs, the odds of many of these young adults -- aged 16 to 24, excluding students -- getting a job and moving out of their parents' houses are long. Young workers have been among the hardest hit during the current recession -- in which a total of 9.5 million jobs have been lost.

    Unemployed...
  • I am a 20 year old college student, it's now my third year now and I've been looking for a job for a long time. For the first two years I lived in the dorms but the cost went up, so now I'm back home. I'm still working hard in my study's to have a better furture, but it would be lovely if I had a job. My books were over 700 dollars this semester!!! But God is good so I'm not going to let this recession get me down. In due time this too shall pass. Keep your head up!!!
  • i dont want to say it but i have given up, i see that no matter how hard i try this recession really got a whole lot of us down. But i will leave it all in gods hands.
  • They wonder why there are people killing robbing, stealing and selling illegal drugs. Thats they way the young people know how to get money because there arent any jobs out there for them to get. If we are looking for change start by opening up more job oppurtunities. They government have money to build new properties why not invest in into something else.

  • If there is no illegals coming to our country it would fall apart, and trying to find them all would take forever.

Just wait until GREEN jobs come.

Me 24 no job, hell yes it sucks.

  • I wish that more readers of this site would take time to educate themselves on certain issues before leaving a comment, not basing what they have heard third or fourth hand. Its a face obama is driving us straight into the ground i mean some moron on here said raise the min wage to $15.00??!! I make 16 so if minimum wage doubles than in all fairness shouldnt mine, what employer could afford to do that. Please educate yourselves before you open your ignorant obama voting for mouths(or keyboards)
  • this post is so true!!!! i'm 27 and i did what my mom and other adults told me to do, go to school, make good grades, and get a good education so you can have a great job and create a wonderful future for yourself. So i did just that, i even went on to obtain my master's degree and here i sit today struggling!!!!!!! i have a job (thank god) but im not even making enough to move out of my mom's house. I can't find a decent job and i have to work because student loans must be paid! i feel like i was lied to. I've done everything i was supposed to and here i sit barely living pay check to pay check. So now what am i supposed to do???????? Uncle Russell any suggestions???
    • Stop feeling sorry 4 ur self n work harder..
  • I'm with u Twinone & yes Uncle Rus-that does suck -especially after seeing the video of children beating other children to death cuz they have nothing 2 do! Where is all the stimulus money 700 billion & counting? We were told 2 b patient & that bailing out financial institutions would b the answer to our economic recovery but so far it seems like politricks as usual & our children are suffering. Being an entrepeneur & wanting 2 pick oneself up by the bootstraps is what many of these young people including myself want but the banks have no interest in doing what the bailout was supposed 2 do -give them the ability to provide capital to create jobs! Prez. Obama says he is a multi-tasker but we've taken our eyes off the purpose of the stimulus & r creating a nation of ticking time bombs as people suffer while those that got bailed out continue biz as usual! Please stimulate the people cuz we need a bailout as in a head start/hand up b4 we have another generation needing bailouts from prisons.
  • Its all bs u ask me Jus take from them scam tha AIG's & the GMC's its all simple
  • The world isn't fair, but anyone who thinks they can depend on government to solve this is deluded. Before you tell me why these people don't have a chance and can't do it for themselves, first explain why an immigrant who doesn't speak the language can come here with no money and still make it. It happens every day. If you believe in evolution, it even makes sense.
    • People in this country illegally will not go to the police to complain about making less than the minimum wage or about being abused by their employers. People also immigrate here legally with work visas in hand, ready to work for far less than the going wages for US citizens. (Do you have ANY idea just how far a dollar will go in India or Pakistan? Work for next to nothing, go home, and still live like a king.) Why would any business want to hire US citizens? Just because US citizens usually speak English doesn't mean it's been LEGALLY declared the official language.

Most of the jobs still open in my area require that I be fluent in Spanish. And yes, I DO live in the US.
    • It's called CAPI. Cash assistance program for immigrants. Look it up. Learn where your tax dollars are going. If you live in California learn why your childrens education is suffering. A disporportionate allocation of resources is being used for the ESL program. Go to the census website and look it up. See how many people don't speak English according to 2000 statistics. Wake up!!! If you don't have a job, park your butt down at your Representative or Senators office and be heard. Write letters. Fight to get your country and it's resources back. You've been getting punked too long and GM, AIG and all those other thieves just stole your money.
  • This is hard to grasp, but unemployment is an big issue. Detroit has around a 30% unemployment rate, and thats only the tip of the iceberg because there is an epidemic of unemployment everywhere. You know how hard it is to keep a 9 to 5, but is even harder getting a 9 to 5, because everything you spend looking for a job is out of your pocket and if your unemployments benefits run-out, its time to move back to mom's house. There are a good group of professionals trying to get back to work again, there will be a lot of veterans searching for jobs, there will be a bunch of college graduates, a bunch of people itchin to get back to making money and working their ass off...but even in that condition..getting hired is a mission. You gotta have the right look, say the right things, and just outright lucky. Trust me, I' ve been trying to get a job for two years, and its a shame how many brush-offs I had. You know what, I won't let this situation bring me down, I'm going to make the best out of this situation, just like millions of americans are doing today. God Bless! Yodo
  • I wanna touch this subject I have a lot of ideas, but in a sense dont know where to direct all my ideas and energy......Im open for suggestions
  • Lets look at the 2009 job trends:

The aging of the baby boomer generation promises to place major demands on the healthcare system. There will be more need for physical therapists as active seniors work their way back from hip and knee replacements. A couple of national surveys also found that physical therapists rank high in job satisfaction. Registered nurses, biomedical equipment technicians, Equipment technicians, and physician assistants will also be in hot demand. If u have a first degree in anything you can do an acclerated nursing program in a year and switch careers and be a nurse.

Pharmacists are increasingly in demand as medical advisers, thanks to soaring physicians' costs and appointment delays.

Workers who crave job security may find their last bastion of hope in the federal government. The federal government needs to hire more than 270,000 workers for "mission-critical" jobs over the next three years, a surge prompted in part by the large number of baby-boomer federal workers reaching retirement age, according to the results of a government-wide survey being released Thursday. Government can always raise taxes or print more money—and it still offers full-time, well-paying positions with generous benefits, including ample holidays, sick days, and vacation days. Opportunities for a government manager abound—in everything from human resources to finance, research to public relations, and technology to art, with jobs throughout the United States and the world.

Software development, new/social media, and online advertising are still seeing a lot of growth.
    • Good luck with that. It takes money to go to college, money that many people don't have. Loans must be paid back and the interest rates added onto the loan might keep you paying for the rest of your life, nullifing any added income potential you may have have. Plenty of college grad.s have found themselves flipping burgers after all the higher paid jobs disappeared. Gov. grants are disappearing and tuitions are rising. Even the GI Bill does no good, since the government isn't keeping up with the paperwork or payments.

Government jobs aren't getting filled fast enough for a reason. What you didn't mention is that nearly all government jobs require a Bachelor's degree and experience on top of having an 'age cap'. If a job requires applicants to have a Bachelor's degree (18 years old + 4 years for the degree = 22) and 10 years of experience (22 + 10 = 32), you will not meet the unspoken 30 years old or younger cut-off. There is one way around it, but unless you have friends high up on the 'inside', you won't find it.

  • Now is a good time for starting entrepreneurial ventures. We need to teach more entrepreneurial skills in schools and colleges. Job seekers will need to be more creative in seeking opportunities in nontraditional avenues. Also some fields like heathcare still need people and they pay very well too.
    • If you start your own business, you know you will not turn yourself down for a job because 'you're just not qualified enough' or because you have too many other applicants. You're not going to fire yourself, either. Starting your own business is the most solid job prospect out there these days.

The real drawback is in needing plenty of money to start a business (business license, a lease on a building or office OR money to buy a domain and pay a webdesigner and site administrator, legal fees, etc.), money to advertise to keep it going, and money to pay all the extra taxes.

If you have the money and an idea as to what business you want to start, it's definitely THE to way to go.
  • I didn't mean any offense in the post below, that is just my personal opinion. I see this country back sliding with an avalanche following it. Life and everything in it is about balance and we as a country is not balanced and no where near being balanced. Not saying that we can't be balanced but we must stop making microwaved decisions. Trust me the meat tastes so much sweeter and is so much tender when it is being cooked in a crockpot verses being made in a microwave. (THAT WAS A METAPHOR)
