**UPDATE**

We received a very gracious communication from the NY Times offering to hear Russell's vision...stay tuned...

I’m outraged that you would publish an article that associates the RushCard with other financial products, some of which prey on the underserved. The article was, in my opinion, unfair, misinformed and bordering on slanderous. The RushCard is not just a prepaid card, it’s an empowerment program that took me many years to build. It was built specifically to help people in underserved communities. It offers more than a prepaid card or a bank account.

Many of our members have low incomes and need to manage their money very closely. We offer free services like budgets, text alerts and online charts for analyzing and tracking spending. Banks don’t offer these tools. Had you spoken with our members, you would have learned that over half of those, who use these services say they save more than $300/year. That’s a lot of money for them.

Our members are left out of mainstream financial institutions and need to rebuild their credit files. You could have learned that RushCard is the only prepaid card that allows members to have their transactions reported to multiple credit reporting agencies, helping them build their credit files. We don’t charge for this either.

Our members struggle with healthcare. Not everyone can afford medicines or treatment. Had you contacted me, you would have learned that we’re bringing out a free drug discount card later this year to help our members with the high cost of prescription drugs.

We would have told you that unlike credit cards and other cards we don’t have hidden fees, overdraft fees or finance charges. We don’t hide or bury our fee structure – it’s all easily available on our website and with every card we send out. Unlike other prepaid cards, we’ve never charged for customer service. We’re more transparent than any other prepaid card. We let you transact in ways the more privileged take for granted.

We have 2 million members. These are real people who see real value in our services. Everyday I read messages from our members who are grateful for the RushCard after having terrible experiencing with their bank or financial services provider. There are thousands of stories of how people landed up with hundreds of dollars of surprise charges from their bank accounts. None of this happens on the RushCard. Had you contacted me, I would have shared these stories with you.

With today’s economic conditions, the underserved communities are being taken advantage of more than before. It’s important that they understand the good and the bad in their options. Your article focused only on the cost, which we keep as low as we possibly can, and not on the array of benefits that go beyond that of any other card, which is why it is a program, and one I’m proud to put my name on.

My empowerment initiatives, which include the Hip Hop Summit’s focus on financial education, and my many charities are there to serve people.  Had you called me, you would have known all this.

  • No offense but there are a lot cheaper cards on the market.

Greendot just lowered fees now with free transactions, unlimited free ATM transactions at MoneyPass ATMs and a monthly fee waived based on either 30 transactions or $1,000 a month in deposits.

Western Union has no fees now no except ATM.

MoneyManager card if you have direct deposit is completely fee less. Unlimited free ATM transactions at Allpoint Network ATM's.

Infusion Mastercard has no monthly fee and no transaction fees and is $3.50 to load at Moneygram.

Thats just what I know about.
  • I see no problem with charging fees. I'm sure administrative expenses on such a venture require payment. My girl works for a large banking institution, believe me they are far more evil than the RUSH Card. Also I would like to applaud Russell for this "get your money right"' initiative. I feel it simply states the crucial aspects of personal finance. I grew up in the burbs, in a blue collar family. they definitely aren't teaching this stuff in the public school system. Once again, it took hip hop to bring proper knowledge to my life.
  • I have been a RUSHCARD holder for over a year now and it has been the best financial move I've made in years. Seeing my spending trends helped me see how much money I was actually bringing in and wasting every month on useless things. Since then I have been able to control my spending, pay bills on time using the bill pay system, and break the cycle living check to check. My mother was so impressed she closed her bank account with Bank of America ( which charged her fees for everything) and got with the RUSHCARD program. So thank you Mr.Simmons for creating a system that works for people who were not as fortunate to grow up with all of the financial advantages as middle and upper class America.
  • Mr. Simmons, I would love to ask you personally a few questions regarding the rush card. Why are all the planning, benefits, and fees listed online? If the market you wish to serve is the truly, "underserved" the ability to access the internet at a moment's notice does not exist. Do you have any "brick and mortar", face-to-face initiatives to take financial education to the homes and neighborhoods of the underserved? I applaud some of the efforts laid out by this card's programs, but question the effectiveness and efficiency of programs primarily on the internet. Please note I am not writing this in an antagonistic tone, but one that wonders if the program of financial education could be served better.
  • I sit here and read comments sometimes and when I do i read this stuff like these white companys have been taking black money for years u know i'am white and i get tired of hearing white and black everyone is the same people i could careless if you were black or white the point of the card is to help people it isn't for black people who have been screwed by banks.
    • It is for everyone.. we all have to live here in the same place some are better off than others. But some of the time it is decisions you make in life. We all have problems, and it isn't because we are black or white. It is the decisions we make. And some people say the card is bullsh**, it costs to much. Now if russel didn't charge anything. how would he pay people to offer these services. It is creating jobs and helping people in at the same time. Offering it free would be a dumb decision. In this economy not even Russel could afford to support o company like this for to long it costs money. Just be glad someone with some money is looking out for people.
  • i wasnt aware that other cards reported your transactions and helped build credit thats good news, we started the process and invested to get it done so im glad that now that we made the case others are following one of my main concerns, and there were many, is that they didnt see that the diamond rush card can be activated for 3 dollars and is the cheapest program possible and by far the cheapest available on the market much cheaper than any on the market the main point is that this is an empowerment vehicle not an exploitative one iam still investing to find innovative ways to help the underserved communities
  • Go UNCLERUSH! The RUSH card isn't the only prepaid card that report payments to the bureaus for free. But I get your point!
  • I love to recycle black dollars. I plan to try the Rushcard. I'm an African American Graphic Designer / Illustrator and Printer I network with other business in the African American Community and we need to take responsibility for growth in our community.

Believe there is still the potential growth in our community. I choose to be a part it.
  • Its amazing how these white owned corporations have been financially raping the black community for over a century, but an African American owned corporation comes in & offer more benefits @ a cheaper price without discrimination and people want to lynch it.

The truth Being told, they are just mad that people like Russell Simmons is taking money out of these greedy white people pockets and giving it back to the black community.

Way to go Russell!!! Next stop pharmeceuticals!!!
    • *HERES ANOTHER GREAT IDEA RUSSELL

*You should have a health tour, where you guys can tour different cities in every state and have health summits. Health has never really been an open topic in the black community. Not even amongst family members. We don't think about being preventable when it comes to health.

The reason I brought this up becasue I'm a young African American woman who is very health conscious. I go out for 5 to 10 mile jogs at least 3 times a week. I also take my kids with me. I get chastize by other black people because of it. A lot of African Americans think they have to wait until they are extremely over weight and told by a doctor they should lose weight because of health risks. We should be more preventable when it comes to our health.

Just an idea! Think about it!
  • Same ol same ol...the rich captalising...in the name of charity and inspiring...bull.
  • Russ, respect and admire your business savvy, but I believe the Rush card is predatory, if not to the same degree as the others, then not much different. The people who generally use this type of pre-paid cards need ALL their pennies. But in the end, business is business, so I can't knock you. But I would never use a card that charges me fees to use/maintain my own money.
    • CHUUURRRRRRCCCCHHHHHHH!!!!!! DEBIT CARD SAVINGS ACCOUNTS ARE FREE BUT IF YOU GO OVER.... AND YOU WILL GO OVER BECAUSE THEY PRACTICE DECEPTION WITH REGUARDS TO UPDATING UR BALANCE... EVERY OVERAGE IS 30 TO 40 BUCKS IN FEES.. BUT IF WHAT RUSSELL SAYS IS TRUE AND I BELIEVE IT IS THE RUSH CARD DOESNT HAVE THAT CONSEQUENCE....SO IT EVENS OUT... BUT I HAVE TO AGREE....WHY PAY FOR A CARD YOU CAN GET AT ANY BANK FOR FREE!!!! JUST DONT OVERSPEND
    • The Rush card is sum bull sh*t..it charges u ridiculous fees to spend YOUR money..the f*ck..plus instead of Russ teaching black ppl how to clear up their debt with the banks he gives the black community a card to put their money on and charge them every time they make purchase..Hes Just as bad the white owned cooperation..smh at all the black ppl who are feeding into this bull sh*t
  • I think the RUSHCARD Program really needs to be pushed, I had seen the commercial but had no idea all the services that you were providing. Continue to do what you do stay strong and more on,

    Randy
  • As an accountant I do not believe there should be a fee attached to using money you have worked for. That is my opinion across the board with all financial entities. However, we now live in an era that is almost completly digital. For that reason, we all need acces to money electronically. I have researched the Rush Card as well as many others. There a few which I would classify as better but I would dare not mention. My reasons, although I do not believe in prepaid credit cards, I do believe in the primary purpose of Rush Card.I agree with Mr. Simmons, his card should have not been linked to the others without full detail. It is amazing how easily one can overlook the positive. To put it simply, the Rush Card should be used to help regain control of your finances. The budgets and other financial tools it offers are devices put in place to help you acheive financial freedom. It is what is. A card to have when needed and a educational resource if wanted.
