The Chi Is Like Lord Of The Flies

As I heard the news about Derrion Albert, the 16-year-old young scholar who was murdered, my heart wept. It wept because he was murdered by a group of high schoolers-his peers, a senseless death. While countless others stood by and watched, another young life was wasted. So I have to ask myself what’s going on? What’s going on in our society? A society that has morphed into a dark world where too many young lives are ended before truly beginning. An undeserved death sentence, for a very deserving soul, a soul that was taken away before its time. When is enough, enough? Something must change!

Upon reflecting, I'm reminded of the novel, Lord of the Flies. This novel mirrors the story of our inner city and the plight of our youth. Caught in the middle of a war, a plane transporting a group of young men is shot out of the air and crashes onto a deserted island.  This island represents our inner cities- an environment where ALL struggle to survive. Even though the rest of the world knows of the struggle, very few have an understanding of how harsh life can be or how to escape it.

In the book, after the crash, the youth are left to fend for themselves and must find a way to survive. The optimism of being saved quickly fades, along with order and the common sense they once had. The environment inevitably overtakes the young men, they become transformed by the island into heartless savages and senselessly kill anyone or anything opposing them. In a fight for his life the last remaining keeper of peace is hunted down by the mob of youth, and just as he is about to be caught, he falls to the ground and upon looking up he sees a Navel officer and a ship set in the distant waters.  At this sight, the raging mob was instantly transformed back to the gentlemen they once were.

Our kids are lost, and the environment that surrounds them is a powerful force causing them to transform for the worse and not the better.  The children in the story were saved because of hope. Despite the hostile environment, just a glimpse of genuine hope can reset the direction of our communities and save our children's lives.

An estimated 130 people have been killed in Chicago this summer. And in the last 14 months more than 36 students have lost their lives.  Where was the hope for Derrion Albert? Where was the hope for Alex Arellano? Itzel Fernandez, where was her Hope?  Ernest Williams, Julian King, Brian Murdock, Quentin Buckner, Devour Robinson, Dushawn Johnson, Isiah Stroud, Andre Stephens, Esteban Martinez, Johnel Ford, Rachael Beauchamp, Johnny Edwards, Kendrick Pitts, Raheem Washington, and the countless others, is there Hope for our youth?

Hope is what we need, it’s ALL we need.  Not a “fly by night” type of hope… we need a Hope Ship that we can board, and that we can trust to sail us in a better direction.

  • Nice job Izzy!

To the parents that blame the parents.

Can't be so quick to ask the parents to take control...think about it...most of the parents were inner city kids at one time that "survived" the neighborhood. Most of them were teenage kids struggling to find hope and get out of the hood when they gave birth to this generation. They gave up on their dreams and settled in. It is the parents "normal" to be hopeless, angry, fight & quit school. They "survived" it and have become numb to the death and the destruction around them. So if their kids do it...it is normal to them & doesn't affect them like it horrifies families like mine that watch it on the news. 90% of the people in my suburban village have NEVER seen a person die in front of them or been in a neighborhood like these kids are trying to understand, navigate and survive one more day. It is up to us that have a little or a lot of extra to give back to our LOCAL families that need us. It doesnt have to be big financially...give HOPE and confidence to the kids with the simple things, books, clothes, soap, shampoo, school supplies, what about that laptop you replaced? Winter wear or a turkey/Ham at the holidays.

Did you know that COOK County, the area where these children are being killed never closes the schools due to weather? Even in the harsh Chicago winters. They don't close because these kids need a safe place to be all day. Their school is where they get a warm meal and a teacher that is giving them positive attention.

REMINDER...the kids are being KILLED trying to get to and from the schools not being punks on the street.

I encourage you to look at Israel's website & make a donation. My family supports his vision.
    • Realistic Parent.....very, very well said, thank you. I will tell I am from the inner-city and made out, thanks God. What you said is so very true we have to remeber where we came from.
    • I will agree to disagree. However I feel that this is another excuse to not succeed or do better for ourselves and our kids. Many of the ppl in my neighborhood growing up didn't have the best parents and I can say from my experience personally in my family we struggled to make it. But my parents made sure that we knew that their was a better life out there and the same for the ppl I mention who had family backing them up that had seen many a downfall and struggles(deaths, drugs, rape, starving). It starts at home. Just because we lose hope does not give anyone an excuse to behave like savages. It horrifies you just like it horrifies all the ppl that have been affected by the numerous deaths. Even though it might be a norm it still stirs emotions many are unaware they carry. Everyone needs someone from the suburbs to the streets.
  • You said it better than anyone has so far.
  • Well said Izzy and because of you and your work many people will have hope in their lives, not just because of your words but as a result of your actions. thank you
  • Well said Izzy!
@ Terez, well said to you too. I totally agree. I am from Chicago and now live in LA and it hurt my heart to know that happened in my city. I moved to give my 3 kids a better life and yes I know where they are at all time for this reason. I teach them what is right and wrong and how to make good decisions. These kids have no hope because they don't know what that is. They need the love and guidance that they are not getting from home. They need to be inspired to do and be greater. When you have kids with no hope, you have the most dangerous thing in the world, because they don't care about anything.
  • the problem lies within us. we look out for ourselves instead of each other. if the person filming decided to take action instead of recording it a life could have been saved. we don't take the proper action to help someone in need.
  • it seems as if some of us are lost trying to find our way out. God is the way out. which one myte be the question and in my opinion there is only one God. God's probably wouldn't fight amoungst each other people may fight about whose God did what but again if our history wasn't watered downed and remixed it would be easier to find an answer. unfortunately it is please don't let it happen again. if we can remember it says that if we can b on one accord two or more he hear our cries. but we're too bzy fighting not even really discussing that we can't hear his voice. God is responsible for all miracles because he created the situation however horrid it may have been.
  • I couldn't watch the video. I did say I wanted to see it. But, when it came down to watching even a snippet, I couldn't do it. It was too hard to try watching someone beaten to death. Only for me. I can't speak for another man or woman. But, it was difficult for me. I thank this NFL player Israel "Izzy" Idonije for writing this piece. It should open the eyes of this nation letting us all know that our youth need our help to strive for greatness. I know it opened my eyes. I mean they can see examples of success or goal achievement on tv, but if they have no one that they can physically see that through then they'll constantly believe that their own goals are unattainable and resort constantly to things like this!!! This should never have happened!!! Sure, we as a nation should stand up, but so should their homes. That's where it starts.

  • I for the first time actually viewed the video. It is disturbing. I didn't want to see it, but had to see. I am the mother of a 5 year old son. Who is also angry and hurting. But it is our Job, my husband & I to do whatever we can to keep him from those streets. To keep him engaged in a way that he will be a product of a good environment. My hands are shaking as I write this. After witnessing this act of violence. We need more than hope, Izzy. We need parents to get off their asses and be what God bless than to be; Parents. I don't blame those children. I blame the parents who turn a blind eye on young black males. Who turn a blind eye to their too fast daughter's. I blame those parents who are still too interested in getting their own sh*t straight instead of handling their parental duty. God gave them to us, for us to teach them how to reason. To think, to manage, to listen, to learn, & then to continue the cycle and do the same for their children. But when Babies have babies. They don't know how to reason, to think, to listen, to teach. They know nothing. It is a sad cycle for inner city "baby mama's & baby daddy's". I am sad. Because I am well aware that those children showed signs of reckless behavior before killing some kid with a railroad spike. I am sure that one mother threw up her hands and said I can't raise them anymore. But now the system will. You had your turn. I'm sure that keeps those mothers up at night. You're 18, 19, 17 year old sons will be going to jail for probably the rest of your life. Wouldn't it have been easier to just give them some more of your time now.
