I remember, like it was yesterday, hearing one of my favorite rap records of all time, “Aint’ No N*gga,” while sitting in office and talking about the “Nutty Professor” soundtrack with Kevin Liles.  He told me about Damon Dash, who wasn’t looking for just a record deal, he wanted a label.  He and Jay weren’t looking to make hit records, they were looking to make history.  I knew immediately that I was hearing greatness.  But I wasn't clear on who was greater on the record.   I loved Foxy Brown at least equally as much. What I definitely didn’t know, back then, is that Jay-Z would surpass Elvis Presley with the most number one albums as a solo artist of all time! It just happened, so naturally…it was like breathing, watching Jay put up number one albums. Damn. 11 in a row.

Looking back at his amazing career, it suddenly dawned on me, that in a hundred years from now, we’re gonna be talking about Jay-Z.  When we think of hip-hop, we will think of Jay. But what is even more important than his album sales, is his affect on American popular culture. Let us not forget that all the other “kings” didn’t come from the culture that created the music that they played. Hip-hop is the first cultural phenomenon represented by a face in the community where the culture came from. This wasn’t possible for rock n’ roll or blues or jazz…it was Elvis and Mick Jagger and Benny Goodman who were always considered the best. But, now the king of rap is confirmed black. And that means a lot.

Chuck Berry, as great as he was, couldn’t do it. It took a few kids from Hollis, Queens to integrate MTV. It took a bunch of MCs from Brooklyn to integrate popular radio. It took hip-hop to the change the face of America. It changed racial politics. Kids in Beverly Hills now understand the plight of kids in Compton.  It changed the way kids dressed in Brixton and Johannesburg. It gave a voice to the voiceless. It became so powerful, that it gave us the President of the United States. Without hip-hop there is no Barack Obama. And without Jay-Z, we wouldn’t be where we are today.  I love Eminem.  I love the Beasties…I will love the next Indian, Italian, Spanish, Asian rapper as well.  But the king will be a NYC African-American, just like the founders Bambaataa, DJ Hollywood, Grandmaster Flash and a few others.  So I lift  a glass to the King and look forward to the day when he passes the Beatles with the most number one albums of all time! Cause, damn, he already crushed Elvis and his blue suede shoes.

God bless you Jay! Hip-hop loves you!

  • Big up to J! We are evolving in a beutiful way. Lets continue to speak volumes with our music!! Real music.

And most importantly, lets continue to respect and acknowledge each other on our achievements, whether they are big or small, it means alot!
  • Russell, maan I give you props for just grinding til you found it....that thing that that was such a part of you...your gift. I definitely appreciate your toast to Jay...truly who would've know. Sometimes when someone like Jay is so consistent with his gift of music you are very seldom shocked...cause you as a listener expect that from him. But, to know he crush the idol erected in this country to hush the likes of Lil Richard, Chuck Berry and the likes....Dayum....it feels good to know a representative from a culture who have litterally changed this country has done kust that. Big ups to Jay-Z!!! Big ups to Hip-Hop and definitely big ups to you Russell because you showed Master P, Cash Money, TI, etc...etc...how to come into an industry and handle their dayum biz. God bless you Russell
  • There are alot of things that I am proud of. As a Black woman in this country, I have learned to watch and listen to what is around me. There are many things that I have seen like watching Run DMC in the early stages backstage and understanding the grind because I was on it too. Jay has come full circle with his career and his life... Growing up in NY you see alot of people that you don't think that will make an impact on society...but Jay has. I remember the hustle and the grind seeing as I was hanging out at 128 Lewis Avenue in Marcy Houses with my girls Vera, Tee- Tee, Eunice and LaChandra. I would see him from time to time doing him....I am proud because he is one of the good ones from the soul. Jay took a negative situation and turned it into a positive position. I would love to sit down with him and hash up Marcy just to see how he feels about how far he has come and really never left. I live in Las Vegas now and when I hear EMPIRE STATE...Oh my God! I turn the radio up as far as it will go and do my 40 year old dance (and I be gettin it too). Jay if you are listening, We will always know that YOU broke Elvis's record. Thank you for the music and thank you for you just being you. You are truly our KING....Tell our princess that we said "What up?". Russell it is all about you.... You set the standard and by the way that things are going, we gon be aight! Thanks

    Nikki
  • Hey, good for JayZ. I'm really glad he has sold so many CDs.

I'd just like to add that 100 years from now, people will still be singing Chuck Berry songs. Chuck Berry will still be amazing and relevant as will all the other people on the Chess record label, the motown label etc. etc. etc. 100 years from now, Chuck Berry will be remembered as being the one who brought rock and roll to the planet. Elvis is the king of Rock and Roll, but Chuck Berry IS Rock and Roll. All of us who are still playing with Chuck Berry (Yes he still tours) all know this, we all respect it and we all have a very healthy appreciation for it.

  • My most recent WordPress blog post has prompting me to address you for additional information if I may.
I'm curious UncleRush, why Celebrity Twitters Don’t Interact or Support Their Followers; unless they are a part of their own tight celebrity group of Tweeters?
I'm just saying, followers help to give celebrities their Twitter status, but the celebs won't reciprocate - for good causes. There was a Tweeter who was just trying to get Tweeters to click a vote so they could get a writing job, but the celebs were non-responsive. Why, are only celebs causes important enough to warrant your attention?
  • @AEROSTATLE, you forgot to mention Elvis will also be remembered for being a junkie who died on the toilet.

@those who naively think Elvis was actually talented. Elvis was a media-hyped entertainer with mediocre talent - there was a desperate need for a vanilla entertainer who could not only steal the music of chocolate musicians, but who could also win over his audience with a gimmick - he succeeded in doing such.

Anyway, this post was to note Jay-Z' accomplishment, not to get into a pissing contest about Elvis' lack of talent.
