Here we go…another heated debate in Hollywood. This time it’s Spike Lee who is attacking Tyler Perry’s TBS sitcoms “Meet the Browns” and “House of Payne” as coonery and buffoonery. (Amos and Andy type stuff). Tyler Perry responded to Spike’s comments in his interview on 60 Minutes which aired last night:

  • Well I agree and disagree with both of them. Spike made movies in an era were people were more critical. Tyler is making movies in an era where racism seems to be on a rise again. I have read comments from whites using racist remarks to Madea and Browns' character. Spike Lees' movies gave us a sense of hey this is happening, how can it be fixed. While Tyler Perrys' movies gives us a sense of hey if we can't laugh at ourselves, then what can we laugh at. So to make harsh comments at Spike and call him a hater or whatever works both ways. They both can come to get and make something great. Honestly why is there not a movie based on the success of our ancestors, where history books fail to portray. People like Elijah McCoy, Josiah Henson, Sonny Ali, Nat Turner, and the Buffalo Soldiers (just to name a few), should be talked about.
  • Come on Spike,I only wish my children had grown up with Tyler Perry's Movies and sictoms " Family Reunion", Medea goes to jail" and "Why did I get Married". Believe it or not I know that we all can find something in the movies to relate to if no more than just whole-hearted laughter. instead of having to make them leave the room when certain scenes of "Jungle Fever" or "Mo' Better Blues" and others came on. Its ok to want what others have acheived but we must try to be the healers of what is going on in this world today not part of the reason for all this turmoil. After all laughter is the best medicine.
  • I am very saddened by the fact that We as a people can't support one another in our successes....When Spike Lee first made the comment he made valid points but to a degree, There is nothing demeaning or embarrasing about the chararcters that are potrayed by Tyler Perry..We all have family members, friends or even associates for that matter that these characters remind us of...They offer wisdom, love, courage and they aren't people we should be ashamed of...If their were some Madea's in our lives today Maybe we wouldn't have so much black on black crime, so much sense less murders, Madea has been a mother in a sense to those who don't have mothers...While those who are ashamed by the characters because they feel as though they've made it....LOOK AROUND these characters have brought laughter, religion, and family time to a much needed community!!! Much love and respect
  • aww c'mon spike... do u really have 2 go there??? don't we have enough problems w/o tearing down one of our own??? i could see if tyler were making films that didn't make any sense whatsoever and that were loaded w/cussing and celebrated pornography, drug abuse, and the other ills of life. instead, you're tearing down someone who created a character based on his own family members who i'm sure if u look deep enough can also be found in your own family. do i watch "house of payne" and "meet the browns", no. i don't find them all that funny and frankly prefer cooking shows, crime shows, and the stuff that they show on channels such as pbs. now tyler's movies are another thing. i've enjoyed each and every one of them - especially "daddy's girls", "why did i get married?", and "diary of a mad black woman". u on the other hand haven't made anything 2 suit my taste since "malcolm x" and "get on the bus". but that's just my opinion. u are 2 very different artists and should be allowed to express your talent in any way u see fit. if the public supports it... fine. that's why we have freedom of choice. and if u feel tyler's not living up 2 YOUR standards spike, then maybe u should put all of YOUR energy towards making the movies u deem appropriate 4 viewing instead of tearing him down.
  • I have to agree w/ Spike. First of all, I am a 39 yr. old male who was tremendous admiration for Spike. He makes provocative, realistic movies about the African-American experience in this country, from a more wholistic or universal perspective. His movie “X” definitely represents a milestone in African-American film making and should be considered one of the best films ever made. Tyler Perry’s movies on the other hand tend to be “preachy”, overly moralistic as if we all just went to church things would be great, tend to cater to only a subset of African-Americans (female, bitter, and scorned), and lastly tend to present traditional stereotypical caricatures of black folks (angry female, big black mamma, docile yet buffoonish black male, predatorial sex-hungry black male, wise older preacher character). In my opinion Tyler’s movies are buffoonish and overly simplistic and tend to reinforce stereotypical images of African-Americans. There is no comparison between a Tyler Perry movie and a 40 acre and a mule production. I agree with Spike 100%.
  • Please excuse my misspellings lol
  • it pisses me off too Tyler. If we tried to say that every character ever made in each black movie was suppose to be a real life character, that means many of Spike's movies would come across MAJOR criticism by me! We are suppose to up life and help our sisters and brothers of color, not belitte and redicule them. I personally feel laughter is good for the soul. We dont all want to be depressed about issuse in everyday life. With out laughter , there would be more suicidal people out there in the world giving up from all of the worlds problems. No Madea and Mr. Brown may not be your cup of tea. If not dont watch the movies and keep it moving. Tyler's movies are enjoyed by all people and I highly doubt people of all races see them and say hey all people are like this. No! We are not! Tyler touches all types of issues and includes comedy and God. The ratings and success shows! Keep doing what you do Tyler! Love you my brother.

  • I LOVE TYLER PERRY MOVIES!!! When I go to the movies I want to see a movie that can make me cry, laugh, and feel the holy spirit. Tyler gives all of that and more. I think he's doing a wonderful job. As black people we have a diverse race. But one thing that's for sure, in at least one of Tyler's movies we all have a family member of friend we have seen in his movies one time or another. He gives you reality and as a black race if the only time someone gets a word of god is from going to the movies to see Tyler or Madea then I can say he has touched someones sole in a marvelous way. We love you Tyler. Don't worry about the haters and pretenders. God has your back and your fans!
  • Maybe instead of dogging Tyler Perry in the media, Spike should try to collaborate with Tyler Perry so he can get his weight up. Tyler has done what many would love to do. He has his own production company. We need more blacks with this type of presence so we can see more blacks portrayed in different roles. And so more blacks can be working.

There aren't that many roles available for black actors and actresses. Tyler is giving them jobs consistently. Come on Spike, we want to see you do the same again.

  • ok so maybe spike shouldnt be dissin the brother...but BE FOR REAL FOLKS, how many of you actually laugh at meet The Browns or House Of Payne??? That crap isn't even funny!!! The truth is every1 getting sick of seeing Madea. For the first few movies it was like okay, whatever, haha...but by now we are all over her. Also, Perry's dialogue/scripts in all his work just doesnt flow well to me; it's always choppy, awkward, and unrealistic, and has no passion behind what the characters are saying...both of these guys are positive images in the black community and in Film, but i gotta agree w/ Spike a lil bit, the shuckin and jivin is gettin kinda old. and EVERYONE IS SICK OF MADEA. LOL and also tyler, get someone else to help you with those damn scripts and production....
  • Spike Lee shouldn't be jealous of Tyler Perry. Spike helped open the door for Tyler. He should be proud of Tyler and want to see him doing so good. Every Tyler Perry movie I go to see the theater is packed.
  • PERRY IS A CLAN MEMBER! BLACK MAN WEARING A DRESS IN 2009, THOUGHT WE CLEARED THOSE HURDLES... tap dancing clown, you ignorant fools don't even know the real reason hoover killed Martin Luther King for!
    • I agree... I think that were the problem comes in. That character is ignorant and uneducated so when you put that in main stream some have a problem seperating fact from fiction.. I fuels the fire on stereo typing
  • crabs in a barrel ... as an educated doctorate I like most all black films. I think Tyler Perry deserves this time to shine after what's he's been through to be here. God has ordained his work, obviously or he wouldn't have the level of success he's had. People need to laugh, it has healing powers. And, let us not forget that there are a lot of black folks who relate to Tyler's characters that's why his films are so popular. I'm all about progress and moving forward however that is possible. God gives us all different personal connections to him and how we express that connection is personal. Spike has a right to his opinion but don't make Tyler look like a fool and devalue his efforts and the impact of those efforts on the American people. We love you Tyler ... keep up the good work. Spike, do the right thing!
  • Spike Lee has hated on his own foe quite sometime now. Back in the day when he was on Arsenio's show, he was hatin on Whoppi for dating and marrying white men. But Whoppi had the last laugh when she responded to his criticism by telling him she could 1) date who she wanted, and 2) if it bothered him so much as to who she dated, she asked why he had never asked her out! He shut up after that! He seems to feel that all black directors/actors should follow in his footsteps. He has dogged Will Smith for Bagger Vance and Michael Clarke Duncan for The Green Mile. Maybe Spike needs to sit down for a while and look at the man in the mirror before he continues to criticize his bretheren anymore.
    • i love ur comment.
  • what demonic person have paid spike lee to go against tyler perry out standing work. spike need to get with the program of stop the hate. spike need to repent and give his life to the right god. he went against the brother- tyler perry. spike lee committed a gross sin. in the holy bible god give us all commandments to live by. 1st greatest commandment- love god with all out heart, soul and might-deuteronomy 6:5. the 2nd greatest commandment is to love thy neighbor as you love thy self, leviticus 19:18. the 9th commandment, thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. the 10th commandment, thou shalt not covet,(etc.) nor anything that is thy neighbor. people we are living in the last days. it is not time to be hateful towards anyone. it's time for all people to repent of their sins and be getting their house together to be with god coming new kingdom.do not be misleaded ! matthew chapter 24, isaiah 1:4,5,9,10, 16-20 verses. * leviticus chapter 26- read.
