My Empire State of Mind: Why I Should Be The Next Mayor Of NYC

Every day in our neighborhoods, you and I see talented young people with so much promise, hanging out on street corners, wasting their time, with little to do and nowhere to go.  The Community Service Society (CSS) estimates that there are as many as 200,000 New Yorkers between the ages of 16 and 24 who have both failed to graduate from high school and are not gainfully employed.  They are disconnected from society, community and family.

As a City, we can no longer afford to ignore the challenges they face.  We have a responsibility to reach out to our youth, and help them reach their full potential by guiding them down the path to opportunity.

Historically, the “Youth Corps” Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) has been effective in providing young adults with the skills, experience and hope they need to build a better future for themselves.

Through his actions, it is clear that Mayor Bloomberg is too focused on Wall Street to understand what is happening on our streets.  From his private jet, he doesn’t see what is happening in our neighborhoods.  He doesn’t hear their cries for encouragement and support.

I am running for Mayor because, for too long, City government has ignored our youth’s issues and struggles.  When I am Mayor, I will not turn my back on our young people.  I understand their need for hope, and believe in their talent and promise.  They can give so much back to their neighborhoods and it is time to have a Mayor who knows that when we invest in our youth, we invest in our futures.

As Mayor, I will adopt CSS’s recommendation to initiate a New York Job Corps program that would provide 5,000 unemployed, out of school youth with a subsidized job for one year.

I will revive our City’s support of Career and Technical Education through vocational high schools.  These schools are more successful than other high schools in graduating students. Additionally, this curriculum will give our young people the skills they need to compete in our increasingly competitive global economy.

When I’m in City Hall, I will also create a Center for Youth Employment Opportunity, which will actively pursue partnerships with private companies to help train and employ our young people. These partnerships will give them the opportunity to obtain internships and apprenticeships, ensuring that they are able to compete in the 21st century economy.

Part of my plan is to appoint a Deputy Mayor for Youth who will be responsible for cutting through the bureaucracy so that our youth are no longer treated as statistics on a page, but as the future of our communities and city.  I have dedicated my life to this effort because I want to give back to the city that has given so much to me.

Growing up as a young African American in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn during the Civil Rights era, I always knew I was lucky to have opportunities that my parents and grandparents never had.  My generation was shaped by this tradition of activism and leadership, and I have a responsibility to ensure that our youth have newer and greater opportunities than me.

It is time to bring change to New York.  It is time to ensure that our children are no longer forgotten.  Join my campaign for change so that we can give our young people the opportunity to fulfill their promise.

Bill Thompson

  • BIll thompson i never saw or heard about you anywhere in ny until the election... I've seen bloomberg on the train and various places, he's done many things for new york as well as the boroughs that make up our great state. he is a nice man and he've done alot for ny and will continue to do so... Glad he is still NY's mayor.. Sorry bill thompson try again.. Maybe you should start doing things for new york as a whole and then maybe we will think about you in a different light, not just being endorsed by obama.
  • There are many things that we could hope for tomrrow, and one of them would be Bill Thompson becoming our Second Black Mayor. But the fact of the matter is this many people do not know who he is so they decided to not vote, making it more easier for our current Mayor to win an election that he had paid for. I hope all go out tomrrow and vote for the best man in there opinion.

    MAY THE BEST MAN WIN!!!!!!
    • Grass root community organizations can make change happen. The candidate should have knocked on every door in NYC. The Comptroller of NYC is an important position. If Mayor could not serve his term, the Comptroller becomes Acting Mayor. It’s difficult to understand why people are not always involved in the political process. Our elected officials are accountable to the people. We saw how community grass organization affected the 2008 Presidential Election. Your do not change policies and laws without being involved in the process. Yes, may the best man win, just get involved with a high voter turnout.

    • I'm black and I don't think NYC needs a black mayor. No offense, let the record show, in most cities where there are black Mayors, they have not helped out that city in crime, or done much to help those cities make a turn around. Although Mayor bloomberg may not be the best mayor, I think he does a decent job. Black Mayors always end up in something scandalous, why is that? No thanks, the 1 thing you can count on BLoomberg for is his business minded thinking and him not needing to scam money from the city, because he has his own money.

  • Somebody has to tell the truth & i wont gain any Fans with what i am about to write but you can Fund a Zillion Dollars in programs for the Youth & because some families are just so Dysfunctional it wont help, Truth is PARENTS need to start taking responsibility for what children are doing (NOT Government), I would like to see someone tell the truth..... Parental NEGLECT is All that is Killing our Youth. To all of you Parents NOT Parenting raise your children right- Teach them to respect Life Themselves the eldery & others after that Maybe a program can work until then we will just keep reading and hearing about senseless killing & wait for another POL to promise more handouts that wont come!
    • True most families are dysfunctional and parents must step up. But, young people living in dire conditions are so resilient and giving when they find trusting individuals who provide them hope and opportunities. The low to mid level income people tend not to have the right social connections to get them in technical and industry doors for interviews or the right schools, without being execellent students. They have no chance of becoming a managers, directors, US President with a 1.0-2.5 grad point averages. The connected people came be dumb as a box rocks and still be in the upper echeleons of any fortune 500 company.
    • A well managed 3-6 month youth Job training program would run approximately $15-25 million. This should fairy dust for the NYC budgets. Professional NYC industry volunteers could also assist with training and mentoring. The kids in apprenticeship industry programs would be paid by their employers. The technical and trade schools opportunities should already exist on some level within the city.
    • Good point, I came from a LOW income family out of Brownsville Brooklyn, But i can tell you Today because of Blessings from God and the foundation that my parent's laid for my siblings & I,My family has been blessed with a middle class lifestyle, But it goes back to expectations & standards set by my parents! I would suggest if a program had to be funded "Parenting" classes would be the Best Long term solution in my opinion that is the heart of the problem. You can be Poor and have morals,Respect and ambition which are building blocks to success but those traits are mostly taught in the Home!
    • Parenting classes is a good idea and implementing mandatory clsasess within our Junior ahd High Schools.
  • Finally, A political figure is speaking out on behalf of our Youth....Yes Bill has said everything that our Youth needs to saty Focused and off the corner, but my question is Bill as the NYS Comptroller, do you think there was some things you could have implemented pertaining to the Budget
    • A Comptroller makes recommendations and audits as an independent trustee. The Mayor and council governs the funding of program and priorities.
  • hes got my vote

  • A BREATH OF FRESH AIR...GO BILL !!! OVER THROW THAT ZIONIST BASTARD
    • Your comment is ignorant and misinformed. In this political race, both candidates are one in the same. Of course all these ignorant miscreants will vote solely based on race. Hypocrites. Do any of you morons even know what the Comptroller does or was responsible for?

BTW, I also agree with the comments that Parental Neglect are to blame for all of our Youth's problems. Until thugs, illiterates, and the worst of our race learn to stop breeding, their numbers will swell and continue to litter a once great city with their savage like children while giving poor and well behaved children hell.

Get your noses out of jars of hair straightener and kool aid politics which will only bring upon your own ridicule and demise and read some books. Stop worrying about materialism and worry about the direction of our people and the rest of the human race.

  • We know why not.
  • Enslaved Africans who sought emancipation had to file petitions with state legislatures. The Constitution barred them from courthouses. Thus, history is repeating itself. It means that Blacks have limited access to courts and decisions are rooted in politics rather than in law. Blacks are, indeed, political prisoners.
    • Let’s stay focused. This blog concerns current issues in the 21st century for the youth of America. In order to be effective, this candidate for mayor is laying out plans to change hearts and mind within the political process. Grass root communities should always push changes. But, you do not change policies and laws by dialoguing way out on the fringes of reality.
    • AMEN!!! Of course some idiot on the payroll will comment on behalf of a candidate we know next to nothing about. Besides, all the money for these so called progressive programs will go into the hands of the connected, grants will continue to go to nepotism loving not for profits and the kids will suffer in the end.

Why wont politicians embrace a campaign based around selective breeding so that N*ggers will stop infiltrating our race and so that African Americans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Haitians and hard working Jamaicans can prosper and take over?

But you see, N*ggers are needed to spread lies and sellout. When will African Americans that made this city and country great be born again so that we can all eliminate and shame the worst of our race?

Them boyz sho could use a hand. Funny howz uz aint sayz nothin' bout dem po' boyz thrown away in dat big bad jail to rot. Ain't no options for us colorsed folks. Boss. I's sho hope use gonna take care of us, like yalls' been' doin.
  • I wouldn't vote for Thompson strictly to send a message to Bloomberg, thats not how I cast my vote. My vote it going for to the most experienced, knowledgeable and capable person running, and that just happens to be Bloomberg.

"From his private jet, he doesn’t see what is happening in our neighborhoods." I understand the need to paint Bloomberg as being out of touch with everyday people, but I think he rides the subway more frequent than flying to Center Street from the UES.

I would like to know if, as part of his initiative toward affordable housing, Mr. Thompson plans on securing the same below market 6% mortgages he personally received from the banks he invested pension funds for other prospective homeowners as well? That would be great.
    • You must be a moron. What part of Bloomberg voted himself into more terms, and doesnt give a sh*t about brown and black do you not understand?

Simply re read what his staff posted on Globalgrind and you will see he does not care about you or us at all. He proposes Community Colleges and bullsh*t programs for us all and does not mention why CCNY is a joke for us and we cannot get into Columbia!?!

He is outlining his plan for all of us. Mediocre Community Colleges for us, Columbia University and more opportunity for THEM.

I hope you guys enjoy your shallow, empty, segregated bullsh*t city. I left, I suggest you all do the same unless you enjoy paying $1,000 rent for a roach infested two bedroom in a hood where cops drive drunk and kids get arrested for weed.

      Enjoy!

  • i support men like yourself .the youth are our future .if we don't teach them of the change that we have made from so many generations before our country will be sold back into old ways of leadership i'm not calling any isms out in my message, but you know who you are .we stood strong to over come the power with a dream. we changed our way of living with positive actions. we have the right to breath in the success of life with positve knownledge, through educating our youth. they hold hands with the universe as we change cycles in life .don't deny our nation of youth growth for the people, for which we stand. we are all under one call life.we must learn to teach positive and productive ways of living.Generation after generation. Global Grind, always bringing it to the universe; with a positve turn.
  • No way Bill,Since i have to choose...& i do (Live here) unfortunately Bloomberg is the best of the worst!
    • THANK YOU...I hate to admit it, but you might as well suffer a few more Bloomberg years and then maybe the populace will awaken to reality.
