Republican Chris Christie has defeated Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine in New Jersey.
With 71 percent of precincts reporting Tuesday night, Christie had 50 percent of the vote to Corzine's 44 percent.
Christie, a 47-year-old former federal prosecutor, became the first member of his party in a dozen years to win a statewide contest in heavily Democratic New Jersey.
The Republican victory deals a blow to President Barack Obama as he readies for next year's midterm elections. Obama campaigned heavily for Corzine.
Christie accepted public financing in the race against the wealthy incumbent and was outspent by more than $12 million.
He ran on a platform of smaller government and criticized Corzine for what he called poor economic stewardship. State unemployment was nearly 10 percent in October and property taxes are the nation's highest.

With the mess our country is in. The President and all other politicians have no business out campaigniong for other politicians. Let each politician stand on his own two feet and get elected on his own merit and not the president or some other political hack. All of them should be working to set it straight and not out begging for money to go to reelections or to fill their kitty's. When common citizens beg for money to feed their family's they are arrested as vagrants and put in jail. Well those political bums in Washington are no different than vagrants except that they are corrupt and crooked. Nevertheless they should be in jail for many reasons.
I'm frrom Jersey and very proud they got rid of the corrupt Governor... This is not a party thing... but based on the fact the inferior candidate could not buy his way back to the Governorship... Obama should be hurt by this since he should not have campaigned for such a bad person.
