Being your own boss definitely has its advantages; but with great power also comes great stress. Managing your own stress can be difficult, especially when trying to manage everything, and everyone, else too. We all know those classic signs of stress; when absolutely nothing seems to go your way, the occasional feelings of self-doubt and in more serious cases, the fear of failure, or that you can’t cope. When starting a business, with a lot on your plate, every little task can morph into a mountain the size of Everest.Neil Shah, founder of The Stress Management Society, explains. “Recent research shows that the body is designed to experience extreme stress two, or three times per month, but we’re living like this all the time.” Prolonged episodes of chronic stress can lead to other, more serious health problems, and by reducing your stress levels you give yourself the chance to reach your potential. So, how can we nip it in the bud, without running away or faking our own death?1) Be AssertiveIf you can determine the cause of your stress, you can take steps to resolve it. If you feel you live in a permanent state of stress, have a serious think about your lifestyle, your day to day routine, what affects your stress levels, and take steps to change things. A small change could make a great deal of difference. When running your own business, being calm and collected will not only benefit you, but also those around you.2) Find some ‘Me’ TimeBe realistic. If you can’t manage that extra task today, then don’t. Learn to say no, and prioritise. Each week, set aside some time to do something for you. It might be watching the football, getting a spray tan, or calling your friend for a chat- whatever it is that floats your boat, regularly find some time away from business, and enjoy it!3) Sleep Right & Eat RightAs tempting as it is to reach for the coffee and sugary snacks when you’re busy, resist. Cut out the caffeine; stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Stimulants will only add to anxiety, put you more on edge, which in turn may affect your ability to make decisions, and will zap you of much needed energy. You might feel that a coffee and a cigarette will help you along for the next 20 minutes, but they aren’t doing you any favours at all. Eating well and sleeping properly will give you bounds more energy, which will only be good for you and for business. 4) ExerciseYes, we’re busy. Yes, the gym hurts. But, if you’re feeling the pressure, take some time to thrash it out in the gym. Exercise equals endorphins, and endorphins mean feeling good. If you’re feeling angry, let your aggression out and try kick boxing. If you need some peace & quiet, try Yoga. Tailor your sport to suit your mood…Aim to exercise for 30 minutes, three times a week. 5) Load up your iPodWhen business is bad, stress is high. When business is good, stress is high. So, whatever lies ahead in your day, load up your iPod with whatever takes your fancy. Find your favourite tune, keep your headphones near, and next time you’re having a manic moment, stick it on and pump up the volume. (Doing a silly dance, or singing along is optional, but hey, if it helps and no-ones watching…)Alternatively, you could try one of the following options instead:- Stay motivated. Think about your goals, and what you’ve already achieved.- When things go well, treat yourself!- Consider if there are any ways in which your business could help the local community. Perks might include publicity, or sponsorship, and possibly some useful contacts. Give a little love, get a lot back!- Organise yourself. This will simplify everything, keep your head in the game and help you to feel positive.- Have a cup of Tea, dip in your favourite chocolate bar, and snuggle up with your pet.- Take some time out to catch up with your funniest friend, and laugh until it hurts. - Catch up with your most pessimistic friend, and realise that actually, your life’s probably not that bad!
