TEHRAN - Iran police fired teargas on Wednesday to disperse thousands of supporters of opposition leader Mirhossein Mousavi, a witness said.

"There are thousands of people in the streets. Police fired teargas to disperse them," said a witness.

Hundreds of supporters of Iran's opposition leader Mirhossein Mousavi had gathered in a central Tehran street and chanted slogans despite a ban on any "illegal" gatherings, a witness told Reuters.

"There are hundreds, chanting God is greatest. Police and Basij militia are outnumbering the protesters," the witness said.
