Strike 1…Strike 2…

With the first significant elections post-2008, the Democrats of the Obama Era whiffed on a chance to keep a significant hold on the imagination and confidence of the country.

The official word coming out of the White House was that President Obama was more inclined to watch the Chicago Bulls game Election Night than to watch the results of the running of the electoral bulls, particularly those in New Jersey and Virginia.

I can understand watching hoops over other sports that night, including politics and baseball. After all, it’s tough to see your team give up big leads in the middle innings because of poor pitching and shoddy defense.

Just one year after President Obama made significant gains in Virginia and New Jersey on his way to the White House as a candidate, his presence on the campaign trail as award-winning president was not enough to hold significant seats in both states as both gubernatorial races went to Republicans. Despite having a popular president, a supermajority in Washington, and a Republican Party splitting itself (to defeat) in NY-23, the Democrats were unable to maintain blue-state status in New Jersey (a Democratic stronghold) and new-blue status in Virginia. In the “Old Dominion”, the old way of political loyalty kicked in as Republicans took a sweep at the top of the ticket, capturing the governor, lieutenant governor, and attorney general posts.

None of this is good for the president or for the supermajority in Washington.

People may not call it a referendum on the president and leadership in Washington, but there is a clear correlation between the votes being cast in these gubernatorial elections and the dissatisfaction swirling around the country with what we have received in 2009 from our political leaders. Scoffs about Beck and Limbaugh aside, those that have tied themselves to the Obama Phenomenon after November 2008 have not had the typical of political and personal successes that President Obama enjoys even during rough times. Personal charm is just that – personal – and has a hard time transferring to less-than-optimal candidates running on failing policies in difficult economic times. Further still, personal charm loses political style points in times such as these.

Continued news about rising unemployment rates (despite the expensive stimulus package), health care squabbles on Capitol Hill, and non-stimulating stimulus packages (particularly regarding jobs and unfrozen credit that Americans desperately need) drown out complaints that Republicans are sabotaging Democratic leadership. It is a cry that is increasingly hollowing out as Americans become more attune to the inefficiency of the supermajority, the disappointments for immediate change via the Obama Administration, and the frustration coming from ongoing losses on Main Street, even as Wall Street has hit 10,000 once again.

For the home runs that the Democrats hit in 2008, there have now been two big swings and misses afterwards. With a continuation on the path the Democrats are currently on, it would be no surprise that these 2009 curveballs will serve as a precursor to strike 3 coming soon in 2010.

  • No one had a clear cut way to combat the recession. It's trial and error. I think we should come together as the U.S. and try to support the President whether you like him personally or not. We look dumb to the rest of the world looking at how divided our country is. We vote the man in and the world says how far we have come, but President Obama has no support. Well he has support, but we are so divided that it's ridiculous. It's like Republicans and some others want him to fail. How much loyalty is that to your country!
    • Which Republicans wants him to fail? Where can I read that information?
  • It just goes to show that most people in this great land are conservative and that people like Obama but not the Democrates. I'm sure Obama will have many more deer in the headlight moments (AIG, Cambridge Police, over a month to "think" about the war) and once he does, he is gone. The days of Reagan will soon be back.
  • I'm SO Tired of this Liberal and Conservative Nonsense!!! What ever happen to working For the People!!!Washington spends half of the day saying " Hey im a Democrat and I'm Better No I'm A Republican I do it better" Its like a Gang War and everyone is throwing up signs or something.

Truth Be told the average American is so tired of this back and forth Crap...I know I am. In the end we want to elect people who are going to Work...I'm from Jersey and this Year's Election was the lowest turnout for Governor since the 90's. That shows you that People want change, and the people who are running for these offices...well they aren't that impressive to begin with.

Now adays everyone is so focused on How many Dems or how many REPs have seats...This is ridiculus we dont elect for numbers we elect for change. At some point Politicians need to learn the word "CONSENSUS"...
  • Obama has many flaws like everyone else and it is a cowardly move for people to dehumanize him as a man!

  • Chuck Todd of MSNBC said: "I think right now you’re seeing an argument on the Left take place where you’re seeing some criticism of the President — “Hey, where’s all the change?” So I think this is all trying — I think they’re all trying to figure this out. The White House seems to be about, and this President seems to be about pragmatism and — you know, trying to get something done, trying to figure out a solution in Afghanistan, trying to compromise and get health care through.

But you’re right, there isn’t this core set of principles that were so easy to say and do — “change you can believe in” in 2008. I think he’s struggling to translate that to policy. We’re seeing it, this whole Organizing for America wing of the DNC is struggling to work correctly. I think they haven’t figured it out."

While the small victories may seem insignificant, it shows that the Independants (not Republicans) are dissatisfied with the policies and indecisions made by this Administration. He has allowed Reid and Pelosi make the more difficult decisions while he has yet to make one himself.

Despite all of that, supporters will still cling to the idea that any choices made by the Democrats are the responsibility of the previous Administration, never taking notice that those decisions made now will affect them from NOW ON. There are those of us who are still waiting for Washington to become rational leaders. There are those of us who hoped for the best despite seeing that Obama campaigned with no solutions behind him but great charisma. We’ve complained a number of times about the cult of personality that surrounds Obama, but as Todd implies above, it’s really all Obama has.

FYI, AP report came out that the Obama Administration told recipients of stimulus money to count RAISES AS JOBS SAVED. If that doesn't show incompetence, if that doesn't show that they are playing dangerous games with our money, then I don't know how else to convice my people to WAKE UP!!

    • To clear this up: of course Republicans are dissatisfied, but the Independent voters are now the majority in the country. Their votes are extremely important to either party for future elections. Unless sensible ideas are pushed in Washington concering Healthcare reform, the economy and bringing jobs, the Democrats are in serious trouble. To ignore this would be a mistake for the DNC.
