If you are looking to work for the holidays you should have already been on it like white on rice. Due to the recession and other variables out of our hands as job seekers, employment options have been scarce or disappearing all together. You want to secure the extra work quickly so that it does not interfere with your main job.
Here are a few tips:1. Pinpoint your strongest talents and focus your job search on companies that need that talent. Trying to upgrade your career at a time when all you need is a little holiday work will not help find a job quickly. If you are healthy enough and can handle the job, finding a job working with the package delivering services or stores needing overnight stocking personnel are a good place to start.2. Don't limit yourself to just big name companies in your job search. Their are more applicants for these type companies and your chance may be lost in a sea of applicants fighting for the same position. Holiday positions are scarce, and you will be lost in the shuffle. Most big name companies use online applications, and this further dilutes your chances if you are weeded out due to you not having enough experience.
3. Make a Resume lite showcasing the skills and experience you have that will help jobs see your worth. One page targeting what that manager needs is more important than a 3 or 4 page resume that is listing a bunch of experience irrelevant to the type of help they need. They don't have the time to go through the lengthy resumes, and yours will stand out due to it being brief and listing the type of person with the skills they need. 4. At this time of year, it is best to ignore online job postings. Many of these listings have been there a while. Some may not even be available anymore. So getting caught in the web of filling out numerous job apps to jobs that may or may not be there is a waste of energy that can be used on more aggressive, fruitful steps. Online applications also may weed people out that do not meet criteria such as employment history, salary caps, and other points that you may not even consider. Some will stop you from completing the survey due to your answers not meeting astringent requirements.
5. Show up! Deliver your resume in person. Print your resume on decent quality paper, and add a brief cover letter that showcases your interests in the company and why you want to work with them this holiday season. Make sure it is personal to the company and not the usual form letter that appears to be a cut and paste. Individuality helps you to stand out.6. Make yourself the most available candidate in the world. Even if you have another job, list yourself as available for all positions and times. This stops the company from weeding you out due to your lack of availability. When you get in there for the interview process then state your other employment constraints. You will have gotten your foot in the door as oppose to lack of certain availability not opening the door for you at all.
7. Check up on yourself. Don't just deliver the resume and then hope for the best. Call the location the next day to make sure your information has been delivered to the correct person. Then make a reminder for yourself to check back at least once a week on the hiring process to see where you stand. If holiday work is what you are after this process will continue every day till you get the job that you want or need.Don't limit yourself and don't give up. Finding extra work during this time can be frustrating, but it can be done. There are more jobs out there than you know. Work on targeting your energy wisely and making sure you are prepared to hit the mark then keep it moving until someone gives you a job.
