Dear Chris,
Let me start by saying, I want to see you win. I know you think that most bloggers are terrible and all we do is sit around and hate on you…and don’t get me wrong, there are some that do. But I am not one of them. I noticed last week you blocked me on twitter which is ironic, seeing as I’ve never hated on you. It’s not that I’m against you. I want to see you win. However there’s a more important lesson here, bigger than celebrity, bigger than music and definitely bigger than your career. This part of your life – what you’re going through right now – is called building character.
You’re in a position where you’re going to have to work harder for the trust that was so easily given to you before. But that isn’t being helped by you beefin with Oprah or your willingness to lash out at every one whom you perceive to be a ‘Hater’. Just because someone isn’t helping your comeback, doesn’t make them a ‘Hater’ Chris and it doesn’t mean that they don’t still love you or want to see you succeed. You’ve been given a rare second chance, perhaps some just want to throw their hands up, sit back and see what you do with it.
You said on Larry King that you wanted to stand up and take responsibility for your actions and most importantly, accept the consequences. Well here’s the cold, hard truth, one of the consequences of your actions is that people are going to scrutinize your every move. You won’t be given the benefit of the doubt. And until your debt to society is paid in full, many will feel as though you should feel lucky to be let back in the room. Now is that true? Let me put it to this way, you were lucky to be let in the first time. Now, you’re blessed.
I’m just going to tell you the conclusion I think many people are hoping you’d come to naturally: Nobody owes you anything, not support, not a radio spin, not a download, not a video view, not even a second chance.
So count your blessings, continue your community service. Continue your counseling. Continue your growth. But do so knowing that it’s not about what others are saying about you, it’s about how you choose to respond to it that’s defining you.
Oh, and I like ‘Crawl’.
Dueces,
TFG
