Obama Tells Vets No Lower Drinking Age

images.military.com - Army veteran Ernest Johnson, 23, of Connecticut, said one of the things that peeved him before he turned 21 was that he couldn't come home and drink a beer - even though he was old enough to serve in the armed services and die for his country. Obama told Johnson he sympathized, but that setting the legal drinking age at 21 had helped reduce drunken driving incidents and should remain.

The reason the drinking age was changed to 21 was because of the astronomic levels of drunken driving (specifically by the 16-21 demographic). There were two options proposed: A.) Raise the drinking age or B.) Raise the driving age.

The former was chosen because the later would have meant that a lot of people who needed to drive in order to get to work would not have been able to.

I saw this special on MTV and, as always, I was surprised with how thoughtfully and confidently Obama handles issues that affect the people he hopes to represent.

I am glad we finally have someone running for president who doesn't give the canned answers. Obama listened to the question, and gave an actual and reasonable response that wasn't the crowd pleaser or dodge you usually get. Actually, by giving a thoughtful honest response it appeared that he commanded the respect of everyone in the room.

Obama once again proves that he is the leader most ready to lead this country into a new era.
