The hum on the opening day at the National Hip-Hop Political Convention was that Ludacris had played himself. Badly. Come on, man. You got a degree from Georgia State. Rap deserves more than that. We know that these days it's gangsta to be political. But if you really want to battle on that level, step up your game, else you'll just become another tool for the right-wing talk-show circuit.

  • Yeah, I feel what the homie Jeff Chang is saying. But at the same time, I think people have unreasonable expectations for not just rap, but entertainment in general.

The battle rap statement was only somewhat accurate, because it had the battle rap format of dissing. But it's not any different from what guests on political talk shows would say; it's just in hip-hop lingo. And it's not like the song was called "Obama '08" as an official slogan for the dude. It was just called "Politics As Usual" - and it talked about politics.

Still, he did set himself up to be a tool for the right-wing talk show circuit, and that's too bad. But they're going to use whatever we do anyway, so why hold back our true expression?
  • The Ludacris song was done for a DJ Drama mixtape. So I guess it was done for the streets. The same thing we complain that rappers never do. Now we all mad because he did it. Hahahah!
