IF YOU A REAL NAS FAN, THEN YOU KNOW THAT THE “MADE YOU LOOK” RECORD WAS NOT ABOUT ACTUALLY SHOOTING BUT ABOUT RHYMING. I WANTED TO TAKE A MINUTE TO TALK ABOUT THE RECENT TRAGEDY IN BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK.

THE WHOLE SITUATION JUST MADE ME START THINKING ABOUT THE WAY THE MEDIA HAS COVERED IT AND ABOUT HOW ALL TYPES OF SHOOTINGS HAPPEN ALL THE TIME FROM THE HOOD TO THE SUBURBS.

DO YOU THINK THIS STORY HAS BECOME A NATIONAL HEADLINE BECAUSE IT DIDN’T HAPPEN IN THE HOOD?

  • it's a shame how at the end of the day our world (USA) the land of the free is still governed by puppet masters who yank on their strings whenever the feel it neccessary. Unfortunatly shootings and robberies and murders happen everyday everywhere in this country. We the "minority community" we who grew up maybe a little less fortunate are the ones who are being exploited and put out there because at the end of the day it comes at no suprise that the "hood" is violent. There is no way that the head F$#% in the upper class comunities would allow such exposure. God forbid there is a Murder or some crazy middle american goes nuts and shoots his nieghbor dead for letting his dog crap on his grass. People would be scared to live in such a place, there would no longer be any private sanitation or the mayor wouldnt be able to drive a 50k car paid for by the tax payers money. take for instance the mayor of toronto. Their sanitation workers are on strike and they have resorted to filling the city parks with peoples trash. now what happenes when he goes on the news...? He say's, " It's no where nearly as bad as the i-reporters have made it seem" Give me a

f$%$%# break!! OF COURSE HE WOULD SAY THAT. now i come from a less fortunate area in BROOKLYN NY. on garbage day in the middle of the summer just the trash from one building is enough to send you into a camatose state. so yes, IT IS THAT BAD!!!!

On a lighter note NAS you ned to come back. hip hop is no longer "hip hop" its faded into the shadows of what these children call music now adays. "hip hip" never stood for doing a dumb as dance while you spew out a fistful of meaningless words... it never meant hangin out the side of your ugly ass car and bouncing around like a dam fool. Nas did it the best with "ONE MIC" the rawest and realest form of hip hop. no glitz no glamour, just "ONE MIC" and enough power and inteligence to metaphorically murder any new age so called "rapper"...
  • yep thats the reason why it made the headlines,, because it wasnt in the hood... NAS you know how they do...my dude...
  • 1st off. You all seems to be missing the question as it was asked and I don't even think NAS understood the question he asked. "If a slaying happened in the hood, does it get media attention?"

YES IT DOES! If more than two to three people are shot at once as part of the same ring of a criminal event in the hood, IT DOES GET REPORTED! Now if he meant, one or two murders a day or week or month that happen in various hoods in American, THEN NO, it does not get massive media attention. The news does not have time to report everytime someone gets shots due to fake thuggery, foolishness and or ignorance
  • After getting a good night's sleep, this question that Nas asked was still on my mind when I woke up. I gave my opinion on a few things yesterday, and I wanted to finish it off with this. When that whole Virginia Tech massacre went down, the media was looking for a scapegoat shortly afterwards. From my understanding of the situation, Nas was slated to perform at Virginia Tech on a stop the violence type vibe. Bill "O'Reilly Oh Really", decides he's God in the situation and brings up a song from Nas Nastradamus album, Shoot Em Up.... Now tell me this, out of all of Nas' albums from Illmatic, It Was Written, Nastradamus, I AM, Lost Tapes, God's Son, Stillmatic, and his latest Untitled (wasn't out at the time), why did he pick that ONE song out of his entire catalogue. He didn't pick out a joint like If I Ruled The World, or Everybody Wants to Rule the World w/ Amerie, or Poison, or You're The Man, Or a countless other number of joints with POSITIVE MESSAGES. Bill O'Reilly never has and never will understand hip hop music. Nas' as an artist for one has evolved as both an artist and a person; it shows in his music and in his dealings with the media. This man has gotten married (congrats on the upcoming son!, Congrats to NORE's new son also), he has done a countless number of positive and eye opening events, and on top of that, has never compromised his integrity. Not to bring race into this, but we can date back as far as the Beatles who sung about Lucy Diamonds in the Sky, or LSD. Or how bout this pop singer talking about getting "Amy"...Or whatever the code name is. It really bothers me, because as a fan of hip hop, I feel that we are always under scrutiny, and always assumed to be guilty whenever something goes down. How bout this thought... Although I'm not really feeling the current climate in hip hop with all the nonsense, I do see a re-emergence of good artists that will restore "Hip-Hop". I grew up on Hip Hop. KRS-ONE said "Rap is something you do, Hip Hop is something you live". The mainstream media and all these billion dollar conglomerates (Respect my conglomerate..lol) have made it so that the word hip hop is synonymous with gangster to the average uninformed person that believes everything they see and hear. I've found myself on the defense a lot of times and always have to break things down for these youngin's that see me when I'm dressed fresh and they wanna say, "Oh, why you trying to be gangsta for, you got a job and you work.?" Lol...It's actually kind of funny to me, because the same way the gangs are out of hand and there's no more respect for the founders of the gangs, it's the same way in hip hop. It's like a lot of these new artists don't pay homage or even care to learn about the history of hip hop. Most the time you hear a response like, "Well, if so and so sold X amount of records in the first week, then they must be better than so and so". These kids nowadays no longer appreciate good music because that's how these record labels perpetuate success. They send a message that you can be ignorant, disrespectful, yet, still be successful and score tons of residuals such as commercials, movies, video games, etc, etc... I know I've spiraled from the topic, but if you are still reading this, you will understand the connection to it all. Thank you for taking your time out to read what was on my mind. Peace, blessings, and good health be with you during this Easter Holiday.
  • Watch what you watching, Fox keeps feedin' us toxins... O Reilly got you all riled up, Oh really..? First off, let me send my condolences to the families of the victims in that massacre. To get to the point of the question that Nas posed, I do feel that the media does not shed enough light on certain facts that society just turns a blind eye to. The situation in Binghamton was tragic, unexpected, and was premeditated by the gunman. Hence, this situation was uncontrollable, which is segue way for my next point. It is well known that there is violence in most inner cities, particularly in the black or latino communities. Now, we must all be responsible for our own actions. But what happens when those who are committing these crimes are not even old enough to reason with what the consequences are going to be? Gangs are on the rise, and with this recession getting worse, we will see a spike in crime. I don't know if it would be a good thing or a bad thing for the media to highlight this problem. I think it would be good if they portrayed the situation as a real problem that needs attention so we can focus on helping the kids that are going to be the leaders of tomorrow. Usually, the media paints a picture that the people that are committing these acts are cold blooded killers. I'm not defending ignorance, because there's always the exception. In a nutshell, the media has a history of having a left wing bias against minorities, and that's the problem that needs to be fixed. For example, a white liberalist such as Bill O'Reilly has a large following, and pushes his bias opinion off to people that would never otherwise hear of most of the people he targets. I'm not saying that there isn't any negativity in hip hop, but who is he to deem it bad, or judge it in any negative type of way.. How does he get away with it..? We must start policing our own communities and start taking our neighborhoods back. God Is Always Good. Happy Easter Y'all
  • i dont believe so? Whats make this a big story is the death toll and the fact that rampage was targeted at people tryna to live the american dream and having it snatched away from them before it was realized.
    • The media needs to stop covering all this stuff PERIOD. Black people alwaz feel under reconized or under appreciated. Thats the problem we need to solve. The media is BS white or black coverage. If there was all coverage on blacks then they would say "THE MEDIA ALWAZ SHOWS BLACK PEOPLE IN NEGATIVE LIGHT" Cmon lol u know thats true
  • I may be coming from left field here but I would rather not have the media focus on if this happened in the "hood" as you say. Our communities do not need anymore ammunition for finger pointing and stereotypes. The situations that go on in our communities go waaaaaaaaaay deeper than some of us just being violent and ignorant, much deeper. I would like for people, especially us to pay more attention to healing our communities than finger pointing, media attention or just focusing on "what is wrong" with some of us.
  • violence in rough neighborhoods is the usual which is why the news hardly ever covers it, that type of coverage would probably take up the entire news hour and I'm sure it would have a negative influence on those who judge people who come from "the hood". Unless it involves the slaying of a young child or of the elderly it would most likely never even be known outside of a 5 block radius.

The one problem in my opinion in "the hood" is the fact that there isn't a sense of togetherness in the community. It really is a dog eat dog world out there because everyone is struggling and think that they have it the worst instead of seeing that everyone is having it bad. If everyone would stop sizing one another up and seeing each other as a threat and replaced those thoughts with the thinking of preserving brotherhood and sisterhood and be more concerened with making it better for one another there would be more harmony in the hood.

Another thing is the fact that compared to third world countries black american's in the hood have it too good. They focus on not having the materialistic things in life and forget to be grateful for the little things. When they wake up in the morning they can easily go in the bathroom and turn the knob in the shower and water comes out; that would be a blessing for a little boy in Africa right now who has to walk 2 miles to get water in a pale.

Going even deeper than that "the hood" has very little libraries, health food stores, vegetable stands, but have an abundance of liquor stores, chicken spots, corner stores, grocery stores (that sell a lot of processed foods and expired fruits and vegetables), and hair shops cause you know when all is bad hair is always on point.

We have to understand that people really don't care about us because a good majority of us don't care about ourselves. Instead of seeing your fellow black man or woman as a threat and the need to terminate their life why not see that they are someone's brother, uncle, son, grandson, boyfriend, etc. I'm sure if empathy ran rampad in "the hood" all would be good. I went a little off topic but I think it is still all relevant. Just for the record, hood is short for neighborHOOD I have heard suburban kids use the term hood many times.
  • It is ridiculous that our mind frames are still making the news which is biased anyway into a racial issue or even a demographical issue. The fact that we are even referring to our neighborhoods as "the hood" shows that we are stunted in our social development. The more that we reference "the hood" we are segregating ourselves from the rest of the world. And maybe just maybe this is why we are not news worthy. If you want to make the news make your own news!!!
    • Excellent, and well spoken point. We are global people and we need 2 start acting like it. From the US, Canada,Islands, and over in Africa, we are global people.

We need 2 start acting and thinking that way!
  • Woodlawnpost.com was created 2 brink 2 the light news around the world and locally, that would not get media attention in the Urban Community. Gold, Silver, Beijing, India, Moscow, France, Urban, Global & more news.

I challenge anyone with pull 2 come and visit and shoot a documentary on Detroit.

http://www.emancipation.cai This is a little of the topic but related. Before the caribana Detroit/Windsor had the biggest African American carribean festival. Look at the photos and the class that was celebrated. It is kicking of this summer & vendors are needed.
  • It’s a Man Of The Truth

N%$a's Kill N%@a's in the hood every day... It's 2 common 2 be news worthy on a National level… In my opinion we have rappers to report on our news… I believe that’s what Russ and many others feel the rappers do… they report about the streets, they tell us about how much we kill each other daily… So we don’t need Brian Gumbel to tell us the news when we have Young-Jeezy and Lil Wayne killing 12 people in their rhymes daily… I think I have heard enough bad news about the hood through our music, let’s let the news shed light on the violence that’s not in the hood so we can see that violence happens every place so maybe one day we can have a majority of these M.C.’s talk about the full spectrum of the hood…

  • I'M GLAD THAT MORE PEOPLE ARE TAKING NOTICE. LET'S NOT FORGET ABOUT THE GENOCIDE GOING ON IN DETROIT MICHIGAN.

THE POLITICIANS ARE TRYING 2 CEASE CONTROL OF THE WATER DEPARTMENT & COBO HALL FROM THE 90% AFRICAN AMERICAN POP.

NOBODY SPOKE UP WHEN ALL THE DETROIT CATHOLIC BOY'S SCHOOLS WHERE CLOSED IN 2005. MOST HAD GRADUATION RATES ABOVE 88%, WITH CASH FLOW IN THE BANK THAT WAS SEIZED AND SENT 2 THE WHITE SCHOOLS.

PRESIDENT OBAMA IS GIVING US 4 YEARS 2 GET OUR S###T TOGETHER. AND THAT IS FOR REAL!
  • THEY PROBABLY THINK BLACK PEOPLE DONT WATCH THE NEWS...LOL
  • people get merked in the hood all the time and its not nearly as news worthy similarily atleast 10,000 people die a day from lack of clean water in africa and basic sh*t and it damn sure aint headline news
    • Hi Russell.

That's why my son (aged 7) donates £5.00 of his pocket money every month to 'Wateraid'.

I think it is important for him to have a sense of understanding of the world.

I told him to pick a charity to donate to as we are ok financially. He chose Wateraid as he could not believe that people die form not having clean water.

    • I have to agree. The media is looking to get viewers and reader’s attention, something with such a dramatic influence on society’s problems has zero shock value to them!
  • To make this a race issue, or disguise it as hood vs. not hood, I think is irresponsible. This is not even about white people. This was a Vietnamese immigrant who shot up an immigration center and killed twelve people taking an english class -- he killed immigrants, and he was an immigrant, himself!!! So, in fact, I think we should be thankful that this is national news, but it involved PEOPLE OF COLOR -- and not just people of color, but IMMIGRANTS, who know one ever cares about. And we can hope that when any tragedy like this happens, that it gets national news. So, as I would agree that sh*t happens in the hood everyday that never gets attention, and that is flat-out wrong. But, to use the Binghampton situation as a way to prove that argument, is weak, at best. Let's really follow the news and bring things to the spotlight on GG that should be getting national news -- like the 14 year old BLACK kid yesterday who was sentenced to life in prison...it was on the homepage all day! We don't need to worry about other people's news...because we have our news right here on the Grind.
    • I don't think anyway said it was an issue of black or white just hood or not hood.

As far as that story on the home page... The black kid got life for killing his white brother. I noticed that. But people don't really give a damn. I think they became immune to it.
    • I do believe that this issue would have received more attention if it was in th hood.

Also with regards to race, i am speaking from an English perspective. In my country it is a maater of race. We do not have the progressive country that you have and i can not foresee a black Prime minister. This is the country of the good old boys network.

I also said that it is a shame that this is happening at all.

With love form across the water.x
    • Sorry about the spelling mistakes.x
    • If it is not black vs. white, then explain to me what hood or not hood means -- and how do you know this didn't happen in the hood? Are you assuming that there are no hoods in Binghampton? And why would you assume that? It was at an immigration center...chances are, it was in THE HOOD. I don't see a whole lot of immigration centers in Beverly Hills.
