The Danger That is Fox News

In this day and age of op-ed', blogs, and so-called news sites, it is difficult for one to know what's actually news and what's an opinion or lie.  Newspapers, journalists, and news media use to be the most reliable place to go to for truth and investigative reporting to out the truth.  Today the line between truth and opinion has blurred.

Did you hear about the 22-year-old nut-bag, Richard Poplawski, who shot and killed three officers earlier this month in Pittsburgh, when they responded to a domestic disturbance call his mother had placed.  Poplawski feared, as described by friends,"the Obama gun ban that's on the way" and "didn't like out rights being infringed upon."  Now where would one get that sort of information.  Poplawski was an avid visitor and follower of Infowars.com, a right -winged anti-Obama anti-government site run by a man fit for a straight jacket called Alex Jones.  Jones has been warning listeners about the Obama Deception for months, and even has a self proclaimed #1 online dvd with the same name.
Now, you might say Poplawski is an isolated issue and that there are many nuts out there with crazy website proclaiming crazy things.  The chances of someone like this being taken seriously by mainstream where it influences the masses are slim.  Well, slim just became large.  Jones has been embraced and, even scarier ,mainstreamed by Fox News to continue there push for radical propaganda against Obama and America's freedom. During a March 18 webcast of FoxNews.com's  Freedom Watch, Andrew Napolitano introduced a segment about "what the government has done to take your liberty and your property away."  He welcomed onto the show "the one, the only, the great Alex Jones," who began ranting about "exposing" the New World Order and the threat posed by an emerging "global government."  Jones ended his interview by warning of Obama's "agenda" for "gun confiscation, forced national service, and bankrupting the country to bring in total police-state control to America." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZMdA06xbcU)  "I appreciate what you're exposing," Napolitano told his guest.

Fox News is playing an increasingly erratic and dangerous game by embracing the type of paranoid coup d'etat and rhetoric that people like Poplawski are now acting on.  It has been stoking dark fears about the threat or armageddon that await an Obama America on a daily bases.  Programs like Glen Beck's show, which night after night, and week after week rails against the president while denouncing him or his actions alternately, as Marxist, socialist, or fascist.  Going as far as saying that he thought the federal government, under the auspices of FEMA, was building concentration camps to round up Americans in order to institute totalitarian rule. (It wasn't until this week that Beck was finally able to "debunk" the FEMA conspiracy theory.)

Have you seen Alexandra Pelosi's documentary on HBO, Right America Feeling wronged.  It's on demand at the moment. I've always made fun of the south and red states for their ignorance, but this is shock and aww.  Here are some quotes from the documentary:

-" People at Obama rallies do not love America as much as Republicans"

- Alexandra Pelosi," Do you think there are two Americans?" Man, " Yes. The gay's and working people."

- " Obama's a Muslim who will get sworn in on the koran"

- " We can't even fly our confederate flags anymore"

- Alexandra Pelosi, " What do you think of Barack Obama?"  Man, "I'm not too partial to blacks. America might be ready for a black president but the south         ain't.

- Alexandra Pelosi, " If you were obama would you come to Oxford, Mississippi?" Man "No, I would not." "Why?" asks AP, "Wrong Color."

- AP," Who are you voting for?" Man, " The white man, MCcain." AP, "Why?" Man answers "Cause I ain't votin fo no n**ger.

And those aren't even the half colorful answers to the questions Alexandria asked.  When Hannity walked into a McCain Palin rally the crowd went crazy. You would have though Elvis and The Beatles just walked into the rally together. And here lies the problem, these uneducated uninformed people don't know the difference between news and propaganda.  They look to these Fox News smear tactics as factual and actual threats to their daily lives and their freedom. The reality of it is when this documentary came out, Fox News and the right went off on Pelosi saying she purposely made the right look dumb and stupid.  But the reality of it is the things they said are dumb, stupid, and ignorant.  The wealthy republican right is embarrassed by their base, but at the same time they have to keep them stupid and ignorant to allow their agenda to keep going.  So when a shooting like the one in Pittsburgh occurs, or when the old women who called Obama a Muslim during the campaign and McCain had to correct her, it is Fox News that is the source of information.  It is dangerous to say the least and criminal at worst.

And for those without HBO...

  • liberalsim is the most pathetic lifestyle or party i've ever seen, their symbol is that of a jackass..their morals are out the window, you care about minorities? teach them to go to school and start their own business, not to get in line for unemployment or food stamps, teach them that abortion is wrong! not build an abortion clinic in every corner of the ghettos os that more black and latino babues can die every day! don't build liquor stores in every corner, teach them to work...teach them that male to male partnership is wrong and immoral, bisexual, lesbian, etc....it's wrong and immoral...republicans are a case also, they have lots of defects as well...both parties are sickening, socialism and communism is wrong and immoral, it will bring down a whole society! in summary, teach morals to your people, show that you truly care, don't fight so they can have the right to abort or get high or stay at home and collect unemployment...it's just an aweful society when liberals are in control!
  • f*ck FOX.
    f*ck REPUBLICANS.

    ugh.
  • As far as credible journalism goes, it would be in your best interest to start checking out the news from over seas. Why is it that people from over seas has a much clearer picture about what's going on with our country then we do? Turn off the television because it's programming your mind to be docile and complacent, for you not to use critical thinking.

You have a lot of underground news sites on the web that has little opinion that you can read with credible journalism. The goal is make sure that big corporate media controls the credible news source. Become proactive and turn off the TV. I don't even have a TV in my home and trust and believe we don't listen to mainstream radio either.
  • daniel we need this site to educate and entertain teach sister i love u
  • Dear
Let me first say I have an issue with all major News Networks including CNN and MSNBC. I have complained about them in my past if you had just taken the time to be familiar with my work. They only true news organization is PBS with shows liek BIll Moyers Journal and NOW. Rachel Maddow is a pretty good at investigating things others aren't taking about and so if Bill Maher. Even John Stewart has more credibility to be then Wolf Blitzer. But my specific issue was based on the 22-yr-old who was a follower of a crazy person who was not only given a voice, but agreed with and told to keep up the good work by a Fox News show. They gave credit to something that wasn't true. Yes the left does have it's fair share of nut-bags. But CNN and MSNBC aren't bringing the 9/11 conspiriacy theorists who belive that Bush is behind 9/11 on the show and telling them to keep up the good work on their crazy beliefs or agreeing with them.
People blindly trust the news. They don't think to fact check everything they hear, that's the networks job. They assume what the report is saying has already gone through that process. This isn't E! news or Star magazine. This is serious news networks. So if CNN were to announce that Obama is Muslim whether your on the left or right, your going to believe them.
The problem with Fox is that their theme is lies and dubious accusations to scare and put fear on their viewers. Because only through fear is it possible to control people into being molded into your views.
    I watch Hannity and I watch O'Reilley, so don't think i don't know what I'm talking about.
As for Pelosi's documentary, I'm sorry your embarrassed by your own as well. But those weren't scripts, nor were they questions as in a deceiving manner a-la-Borat to trick them into sounding stupid or ignorant. They just are that close minded.
    • I'm certainly not disagreeing with you that people should not take the news completely as the God given truth (given the past 8 years, who could blame them for politicizing their stories), but I happened to find that this post was definitely skewed to one viewpoint using similar tactics as the subject matter discussed.

First, I'd suggest you do a simple search on "9/11 conspiracy" on any search engine and I'm sure you'll find some of those news sources have dedicated segments to fuel the conspiracy (CNN, MSNBC, FOX, etc). I have done my homework, so I know what I'm talking about.

Second, We've both seen Pelosi's documentary and agree that it depicts a specific demographic of the Republican party that many of our people take as the true face of the party as a whole. You either ignore or fail to acknowledge that it plays on your "fears" just as it was stated that FOX has done in the case of the 22 year old. I'm not ignoring, I'm not embarassed by, and I'm not sidestepping the issue of racism that plagues/stereotypes the Republican party, BUT you fail to acknowledge the same for the Democratic party both in its political origins and more subtle methods in this day in age (Go figure). There are, for example, gay/minority Republicans/conservative/Libertarians that are "surprisingly" not included in Ms. Pelosi's documentary (to think that it wasn't politically motivated given her mother's high political office within the Democrat party (House Speaker, leader of Democratic majority in the Senate) and you failed to notice that? Shocking.) given that had they been depicted, their message of the tired, racist, bigot, ignorant Republicans are still the same old party as "we thought they were" would have fallen apart. But I guess the film was fair-and-balanced...
    • danielle... i have a crush on you :X
  • I simply can't believe how single-sided this argument is. While Fox has its shortcomings for its politically motivated stories (Right wing, conservative) where is the discussion on the LACK of newsworthy material on MSNBC (Left wing, liberal). Even CNN had its foundation of credibilitly in jeporady during the election (they have begun to rectify and report the news as is lately).

What bothers me is that regardless of who would have won the Presidential election, there are nutjobs and crazies out there who would have gone to the extreme (sic 2000-2004).

There is a growing majority of rational Republican/conservative/Libertarian citizens in this country, what Alexandra CHOSE to document was the fringe/sterotypical group that certain people attribute to the Republican as a whole. The sad thing is that you, and many like you, jumped on that documentary to vindicate your belief in the party you defend, just like the fringe group in the Republican party follow the words of certain entertainers on Fox (Pittsburg cop-killer). Go figure, huh?
  • "Watch what you watching, Fox keeps feeding us toxins, Stop sleeping, start thinking outside of the box, and unplug from the Matrix doctrine, but watch what you say big brother is watching." Nas- Sly Fox

Awareness is the first step of being informed about this situation. We must not forget...

In the early morning hours of November 8, Fox News Channel declared that the pivotal state of Florida had gone for George W. Bush. At 2:16 a.m. Fox announced that the Texas governor had won the state, thus securing the 271 electoral votes needed to win the presidential election. The other television networks followed suit in a matter of minutes. The call was subsequently withdrawn, and to date the Florida outcome remains undecided.

The individual responsible for recommending that Fox call Florida for Bush was John Ellis, who led the network's decision desk. Ellis was not a disinterested party in the presidential election, but the first cousin of the Republican candidate and his brother, Florida Governor Jeb Bush.

This is the type of political nepotism that has been plaguing our country and will continue to do so until we stand up as a people. It shouldn't be about race, but the way the puzzle is coming together looks a bit suspect. Why wasn't the media bad mouthing Bush when he was making all these decisions that got us into this economic/ social mess that we are currently in. Some media outlets now target Obama to fix the situation in the aftermath of Bush's messy 2 terms. God is Great..

    Peace & Blessings
