Spike Lee had an interview with Ed Gordon on Our World with Black Enterprise scheduled to air this weekend. In the interview he complained about “coonery and buffoonery” and both of Tyler Perry’s shows “Meet the Browns” and “House of Payne,” comparing them to characters from minstrel shows.

“We’ve had this discussion back and forth. When John Singleton [made 'Boyz in the Hood'], people came out to see it. But when he did ‘Rosewood,’ nobody showed up. So a lot of this is on us! You vote with your pocketbook, your wallet. You vote with your time sitting in front of the idiot box, and [Tyler Perry] has a huge audience. We shouldn’t think that Tyler Perry is going to make the same film that I am going to make, or that John Singleton or my cousin Malcolm Lee [would make]. As African-Americans, we’re not one monolithic group, so there is room for all of that. But at the same time, for me, the imaging is troubling and it harkens back to ‘Amos n’ Andy.’”

“Each artist should be allowed to pursue their artistic endeavors, but I still think there is a lot of stuff out today that is coonery and buffoonery. I know it’s making a lot of money and breaking records, but we can do better. … I am a huge basketball fan, and when I watch the games on TNT, I see these two ads for these two shows (Tyler Perry’s “Meet the Browns” and “House of Payne”), and I am scratching my head. We got a black president, and we going back to Mantan Moreland and Sleep ‘n’ Eat?

  • Spike I enjoy your work and I also enjoy Tyler Perry's work. Brother lets not putting down each other but lift each other up.
  • Spike Lee is right. Tyler Perry's movies are made for a specific group. Most of these movies do not represent what we should be seeing on the screens in our modern days.

Now that Perry has created a platform, he should start making some intelligent movies. At one point his movies had great underlying messages, but now I would not pay 1 cent to go see his movies. Tyler, please take your time and come out with movies of substance. Focus your energy on quality not quantity, and listen to Spike Lee.
  • OK, I read half of these posts, and I can't take it anymore. Spike Lee made Girl 6 - about a black, phone sex operator; Mo Better Blues - about a sexist, womanizing musician; Crookly - about some 'BeBe' kids in the hood; Clocker - about a drug dealers; She Hate Me - about another sexist womanizer who has a thousand babies; Inside Man - about some white bank-robbers; and Kobe Doin' Work - about yet another womanizer. Why is it every single thing a black person does has to be attributed to the entire race. If Tyler Perry wants to make movies that accentuate negative african-american stereotypes (to quasi-educated, closed-minded people), then let him!! The above proves that Spike has done it - alot.
    • I agree TOTALLY. When was the last or first time Spike Lee made a movie that wasn't a negative depiction of us?
  • WHY CAN'T SOMEONE HAVE AN OPINION WITHOUT BEING CALLED A HATER???? ARE WE NOT ALLOWED TO DISAGREE? AGAIN - Why is that when someone merely disagrees or have a different point of view from someone else they are noted as haters? Spike Lee is NOT a hater! -Spike has NEVER (even before Perry made a play) agreed with blacks being portrayed as Coons n' Bufoons or running the chitlin' circuit. Spike has never agreed to it, which has been evident in ALL of his work. So why should he change his tune now? Yes, we do have a black prez and a BLACK first lady...so when will we graduate from wallowing in ignorance and poking fun at our ownselves? Perry's film makes you laugh and is no better than Good Times but Spike's films makes you THINK, gives you new perspectives!Where is our "Stephen King" or "Steven Spielberg" QUALITY plots, scenery, and MOVIES??? We need to upgrade our mindset or will we be forever destined and doomed to BET.
  • I find it amazing that in the year 2009, almost 2010 and we are subjected once again to the black buffoon image courtesy of Mr Perry. I think the time has come to address this issue, and to put it away as soon as possible
  • WHO CARES! LOL! You people are never happy, LOL!

Jeeze, get over it. Artists??? OOOOK...Frankly, both of their movies have little to be desired. Pull yourselves off the cross, we need the wood. There are bigger fish to fry in this world and in this gang ridden Country.

Social relevance...look in your own backyards and keep those inferior offspring from going bad. Yes, we have a black president. Follow his lead and use him as an example to behave and be a law abiding person. Start by speaking properly, be law abiding, be part of a solution and not THE problem. Is that too much to ask? Probably
    • To coastalgirl. Firstly "you" people denotes a tone of superiority. People like u are really the problem because you view yourself as separate. We are all human beings. Made in the image and likeness of God. No one race of people has been attributed with the likeness there of. We are all in this together. Ok for instance if you live in a city with a gang problem. Then you should consider the conditions in which gangs could even come to exist. check the system. Do your own research on the socio-economics, the school systems, the policies of the banking institutions, all of these things play a role in effecting the world we live. You have been raised to believe a lie. This whole American culture is make believe. The heroes of this country were evil men. Yet we celebrate them as great. You have been deceived if u believe one is inferior to another. Repent from your ways.
Or not. The blind follow the blind. Watch out for that pit!
  • FIRST OF ALL congrats to tyler perry and his success's on all his ventures. but leave us not forget that tyler perry would not hire or allow his employees to be members of sag for a loonnnng time.spike lee has paved the way for tyler perry , so he does have the right to state his concerns. tyler perry's two shows are perfect examples of coonery and buffoonery. I really doubt seriously if the vast majority of you even know what they are, let alone know who amos and andy were or step n fetchit. (sp)95% of the men on his shows are weak, spineless idiots. The few that are portrayed as good or heros, are womens impressions or versions of heros and strong men. they are all henpecked weaklings. A fire chief that can't walk and chew gum at the same time and is afraid of his wife.and allows his neighbors to walk in and out of his house at will A weak man who keeps letting his junkie wife run his life and smart mouthed kids, a son who keeps flunking college classes and is dumber than his middle school cousin. The barber is a sniveling whimpering idiot. the browns and payne sometimes do touch on social issues , but none of them are to be made light of or is in any way comical or funny !! mixing the two together is ludicris and embarrassing.Address the social issues fine , but not as a comedy. give us some strong men as characters !! PEACE OUT !!!
  • IT IS TIME WE STOP PUTTING EACH OTHER DOWN AND START RAISING EACH OTHER UP TYLER PERRY'S MOVIES AND SHOWS ARE ALWAYS AN INSPIRATION AND THEY ALWAYS HAVE A MEANNING THEY DONT END WITH SOMEONE YELLING OR LEAVING YOU TOTALLY CLUELESS TO WHY SOME ONE WOULD END A MOVIES LIKE THAT ,NOT THAT I AM PUTTING ANYONE DOWN BUT COME ON ,LETS GET REAL SPIKE LEE MOVIES ATTRACT CERTAIN PEOPLE AND TYLER PERRY MOVIES AND SHOWS ATTRACT OTHERS . I THINK SPIKE LEE JUST NEEDS SOME ATTENTION AND IF YOU HAVE TO USE PEOPLE TO DO THAT THEN YOU NEED TO PRAY.

  • Freedom of speech allows one person to convey a message differently than another. Here we have two black men with the ablitiy to create and relay messages that were unthought of 40-50 years ago. Yet, instead we have one man provoking the other. If you take one black man oppress him and use him as an example for the other black men, you will create divsion and haterd among brothers. Beat the hell out of a strong black man verbally or physically, humliate him, degrade him and you will always have opress against oppress. Freedom should give one the opprtunity to downgrade another. This is the devil works and he the devil prose and shows in many shapes and forms. Shame on you both for airing you difference in public. Spike, your brother recently admitted to being sexually assaulted so, where is your support. Tyler , a humble man is a strong man.
  • Spike is referring to Perry's two television shows-house of payne and meet the browns. I personally have never been able to watch a full episode of either show. They are not intelligent shows, and not targeted to appeal to the intellect, though they are rather funny (in a slapstick, Three Stooges kind of way) and intelligently written. I just can't see why we can't have more shows like the Cosby Show, where the parents are smart, the kids are well behaved, and the subject matter is funny AND intelligent.

(Oh, God, I just agreed with Spike Lee, who is an arrogant and pompous ass. I have to meditate...)
  • First and foremost you have to have the capacity to understand what's being confronted here. We have all heard the mantra " Image is everything". So let's examined this precept. If all one does is watch and listen to the media and the disinformation that is presented to them then the opportunity to escape reality becomes the reality.
What u allow to enter your gates ( eyes, ears, mouth) ultimately shapes who u become. Pay attention to what's being fed to you since childhood. Do historical research on the portrayal of people of color in film. Then allow yourself to move away from supplied definition of success.
Now you have allowed yourself the opportunity to comprehend the battles that we face. Historically and at the present moment. There is absolutely no medium as powerful as film. What is presented on film/tv becomes reality to those who are not aware or conscious. The bombardment of images are hard to distinguish at the rapid pace they are put forth. Gangsta rap killed and marginalized conscious rap. materialism replaced activism. Surface elementary books and films replaced and marginalized real art and true discourse of real issues. So ask yourself. Who is being rewarded and why? What contribution has been made? What's the level of sacrifice?
What affect has been made upon the psych of the children?
Spike is necessary. Tyler perry is not. We've seen that image too much. Spike made Malcolm X. Perry is Madea. Hollywood would not give Spike the budget he needed to complete X. Tyler Perry becomes the first Black to own his own studio. So let's ask the reasons why one has to fight to make art and another is rewarded for continuing down a path of stereotypical imagery. Black people enslave themselves. As in the form of selling out their own for a profit.
    • PEOPLE REALLY NEED TO STOP AND THINK !! SOME PEOPLE REALLY LIVE THE WAY TYLER PERRY SHOWS ARE IT MIGHT SEEM FUNNY AND AND STUPID BUT IT IS GOING ON IF YWE CONTINUE TO TRY TO HIDE IT AND PRETEND THAT IT DOES NOT HAPPEN THERE WILL BE CHILDREN OUT THERE THAT WILL FEEL BAD ABOUT THE FAMILY THEY WERE BORN IN OR ASHAME TO TALK OR SEEK HELP .

    • I agree with you all the way.
  • I think both men are outstanding within there on perspectives on what is needed in the Black Community. They provide balance to the many needs to a people that are multifaceted in looks, personality, emotions, skills and spirit. Both provide wonderful introspects that speaks to the needs of our people. One can not think that his/her ideology can speak to every aspect or walk of life. Therefore, being inclusive of one another gifts and talents are apropos to a people that are as diverse as we are. I believe Mr. Lee is simply stating that his view speaks to the heart of Black people…and he does. However, Mr. Perry view addresses many other aspects of our lives that Mr. Lee ideals does not
  • AHHHH...YOU KNOW WHAT SHOW I'd REALLY LOOK FORWARD TO:

    The OBAMA'S

Here you have a very good looking family, 2 beautiful duaghters, and ALL VERY EDUCATED! and the stories they'd tell would make every MINORITY Race proud!

Forget the Browns and House of No BRAINS....what you need is to stimulate your way of thinking! The OBAMAS...week nites on WOR9!
  • The word here, ladies and gentlemen is DIVERSITY!

Granted, I'm not a big fan of Tyler Perry but I highly respect the man and how he's channeled his plays into box office gold. If there's any fault to beh ad, it's the power-players in Hollywood whom, in spite of our having a black president, are still loathe to support people of color in front and behind the camera.

What Spike Lee says about how multifaceted we black people are is true, and we need to support writers and directors who want to showcase the BEST of black America. I don't think Perry's characters are minstrels or anything close. Frankly, every family of every race has a Madea-figure somewhere--an outspoken matriarch who loves, chastises and protects her own.
  • I believe that both Spike and Tyler have made valid statements. I also think that Spike, at one time, made a couple of movies that showed us in the wrong light and there were complaints then. As far as Tyler's TV shows, well, I don't watch them all the time, but when I'm in a mood where I need a laugh, I'll watch for that purpose. But they always have a real meaning at the end. Maybe the two should collaborate on a movie that will satisfy everyone. I don't like everybody hates chris, but I would never say Chris Rock was showing child abuse with chris getting beat up all the time. As the lady said earlier, why do we have to put each other down. This was probably a conversation that Spike and Tyler should have had face-to-face and then let it go.
