Spike Lee had an interview with Ed Gordon on Our World with Black Enterprise scheduled to air this weekend. In the interview he complained about “coonery and buffoonery” and both of Tyler Perry’s shows “Meet the Browns” and “House of Payne,” comparing them to characters from minstrel shows.

“We’ve had this discussion back and forth. When John Singleton [made 'Boyz in the Hood'], people came out to see it. But when he did ‘Rosewood,’ nobody showed up. So a lot of this is on us! You vote with your pocketbook, your wallet. You vote with your time sitting in front of the idiot box, and [Tyler Perry] has a huge audience. We shouldn’t think that Tyler Perry is going to make the same film that I am going to make, or that John Singleton or my cousin Malcolm Lee [would make]. As African-Americans, we’re not one monolithic group, so there is room for all of that. But at the same time, for me, the imaging is troubling and it harkens back to ‘Amos n’ Andy.’”

“Each artist should be allowed to pursue their artistic endeavors, but I still think there is a lot of stuff out today that is coonery and buffoonery. I know it’s making a lot of money and breaking records, but we can do better. … I am a huge basketball fan, and when I watch the games on TNT, I see these two ads for these two shows (Tyler Perry’s “Meet the Browns” and “House of Payne”), and I am scratching my head. We got a black president, and we going back to Mantan Moreland and Sleep ‘n’ Eat?

  • BRAINSTORM=== You obviously have not watched all of TP's work, You cry, laugh, feel anger, feel joy, feel justice! take a look at some of his work w an open mind. Many blessings to you and yours and i wish you a safe return!
  • When a black man makes it, why do another black have to tear him down, be happy for the brother, even though you may not agree with what he is doing, be happy another brother made it in a white man world!
  • OMG! Spike get over that your time has past, You havent had anything since....? I think TP is doing a wonderful job and we as black people/african americans have all seen someone in either our family or someone else's family that represents each character that TP shows! its not about being politically correct or showing where we as black people have come from....his shows have a MESSAGE in each and every one!!! If your not gettin the msg, dont be shame---ask somebody! Let another brother have some fame, your movies werent all that Great....! at THE time they were! But my kids ages 20-7 have not seen em, Time and a place for everyone!!!!!!!!
  • Spike Lee might be just a little jealous that he hasn't been as popular as Tyler Perry. I like both of their works however Perry is more real people can really relate to what he has to say, he has positive messages mixed in with the comedy. And in this day and time people need to be able to relax a little.
  • This comment goes to Mr. BRAINSTORM! I agree with your smart intelligent way of thinking and I wish you a safe return!
  • i wholeheartedly agree with brother spike lee. this, unfortunately, sets the tone for how we see ourselves and act accordingly. it ain't cool. nor is it in our best interest. tyler perry's presentation of black people in the usa is a disservice to past present and future fenerations. i, personally, don't recognize his characters. i am harlem-born, bred and raised. we are more than his notion of who we are.
    • Divide and conqure. You are falling into that trap. They both do well at what they do. These mem come from different experiences.
  • The bottom line is, Spike could have been much more PC in his remarks, but he is right when it comes to Tyler's two TV shows. I have seen all of Tyler's work and I love the brother. But, as a serious black man in the military (on my way to Iraq) I long to see some strong and intelligent images from our artist. The buffoonery makes us look so one dimensional and we're not. We get angry, scared, sad, etc. . . Tyler Perry definitely shows all our sides in his movies (even our evil side), but his tv shows are a lot less complex. AS FOR CALLING SPIKE LEE A HATER-GET REAL!! Spike, like Rev.Sharpton loves the black community from Li'l Wayne to Pres. Obama and has dedicated his life to making it better. One of those ways is through conversing about where we are going. If you think that just because some criticizes something, that they are jealous - then you probably do like silly one dimensional programming.
  • I've not seen a Tyler Perry movie. I'm more interested in sci-fi of a godd thriller than I am in a comedic pic. Black or White. Didn't like Dumb and Dumber and don't find Ben Stiller humorous in any way. I have no bias one way or the other towards Spike or Tyler.

These two gentlemen are on opposite sides of the artistic spectrum.

Spike is a film maker. Studied the craft got his Master's degree in Film making. Tyler is more of a story tell who uses film and his venue.

So I think that how you feel about FILM MAKING will greatly influence how you feel about either of the two.

Spike's films have been nominated for Oscars. Tyler's works have generated in excess of $400m in revenues.

So all this being siad, I would no more expect a Spike Lee Joint to bring in $30mm in it's opening weekend than I would expect Tyler to direct, edit and pull off a piece of work like Malcom X or Inside Man.

    Just My Two Cents
  • I agree with Spike. Shows like the Browns and House of Payne is exactly that, "coonery and buffoonery". It only attracts an audience that can relate to that sort of Amos and Andy old school relict. With Obama president and the black population showing a strong force, shows like this only weigh down the black population's true artistic side. These shows require no imagination or train of thought. This is not talent or artistic in any way. Spike is only distinguishing "coonery and buffoonery" from true art. He only means to educate when Tyler only means to exasperate black's struggles.
    • I think its rediculous that we still allow ourselves to "feel" embarrassed by the white audiences' perceptions of us. Blacks allowing Blacks to enjoy the total range of talent that exists within our culture would be a true testiment that we've "arriveed". We are the only one's doing this to ourselves - "walk straight boy..don't let the white man see you witcho head down" or "stop actin a fool in front of da white man, boy". Uhhh, the white man don't really care as much as we do about this. After all, they have Sienfelf and Curb Your Enthusiam, which are comedies meant to make you laugh. Why can't we laugh. Why so serious all of the time. What was more rediculous than Spike Lee's "She's Gotta Have It"..very stereotypical...and talk about the captive audience, Spike Lee utilizes artistic expression all the time with his inaccurate portrayal of the facts in Malcolm X and The Last King of Scotland - according to true history King Amin's wife was not sexually involved with that white doctor...no Ugandan would have been. Spike is always playing the Uncle of the Black race in screen and film, espousing his notions on what he thinks is acceptable or not for us to do. I say, who gave you that job...I personally think he's just a hater. It's okay for black people to laugh..doe he ever do it.

    • All in The Family was bafoonery, Married With Children was coonery. They potraid the lighter side or down side of whites. They made fun of people who resembled themselves. None of these comedies had a message. Coonery or bafonnery Tyler Perry has a message in all of his work. Barney Fife was bait. Why cant Madea be also.
    • I guess you have to watch TP's work and read between the lines. We only need 1 SL in this world not 2. Name 10 other black people who have built an empire like TP's.
  • Quick question - Why is that when someone merely disagrees or have a different point of view from someone else they are noted as haters? Spike Lee is NOT a hater! -Spike has NEVER (even before Perry made a play) agreed with blacks being portrayed as Coons n' Bufoons or running the chitlin' circuit. Spike has never agreed to it, which has been evident in ALL of his work. So why should he change his tune now? Yes, we do have a black prez and a BLACK first lady...so when will we graduate from wallowing in ignorance and poking fun at our ownselves? Perry's film makes you laugh and is no better than Good Times but Spike's films makes you THINK, gives you new perspectives!Where is our "Stephen King" or "Steven Spielberg" QUALITY plots, scenery, and MOVIES??? We need to upgrade our mindset or will we be forever destined and doomed to BET.
  • If it wasn't for the trailblazing efforts of a Spike Lee we would not have herd of a Tyler Perry. Spike set the tone back in the "80"s when Hollywood was not making movies at all pertaining to Black people. The character "Mars Blackmen" went on to make Michael Jordan A household name as well as put "Nike" on the map. Can you say the same about 'Madea"
  • Spike Lee, have you lost your mind? People who live in glass houses........will you know. Your movies put me to sleep. Your no Tyler Perry.
  • For us to have a dialogue we must deal with the issues and arguments presented. Is Spike's argument on point? Nevermind, the crab in the barrel or haterade sentiments. The truth of the matter is that Tyler Perry continues to exacerbate black stereotypes and undermines Black masculnity. The moment Madea steps on stage she undermines Black men. However, to be fair to Perry he does captivate the hearts and minds of his demographic with an unapologetic Christian message peppered in his films. In addition, Perry has hired more Black people than anyone else. The problem is that these accomplishments come with a painful price. Tyler continues the "mammie" icon, the weak black man, the projection of the ghetto culture, and the failure to present middle class African American in a positive light. For example, the upwordly mobile folks in most of his works are classist and aloof.

Everyone has a right to produce what they like but as the hymn writer said, "may the works I've done speak for me." That goes for both artist because Spike catalogue is also littered with some questionable peices. I hope Perry can produce a film dealing with Black manhood where we are characterized as strong, loving, and demonstrate integrity with our God and our families. Tyler needs to read "Wretched of the Earth," by Franz Fanon to get a deeper understanding of how these symbols affect our people. Can anybody do a story on Hannibal? A movie on the rise and fall of King David? A story on Black men and women getting it done in the work place?

  • come on spike, why u hatin..tyler perry is funny..u gotta stop being so uptight..and if u would pay any attention to his movies ..tyler has very strong positive messages and in his tv shows too...i think u are a little jealous babee..lol..but we still love and need u, cause ur a powerful director too.
  • Whas up Spike, why is it that white folks can have every type of movie showing every type of life and when it comes to Black Floks it must be so pure and perfect. Life is not pure and perfect, and Tylers movies show us a side we all kno. Why can we have differances??? Get off your high horse and don't hate!!!!!!
    • I concur with this sentiment...and said as much earlier. I have another question - why are black folks so embarrassed about our struggles and truimphs...why are we trying to disassociate ourselves from the Ghetto...thats part of our history..the beauty of our progress, testiment to our strength and fortitude...nothing to be ashamed of at all. I loved Good Times and What's Happening...I think we should always keep it 100...and for all of the Spike Lees out there who won't, we should keep it 200. Power to Black people everywhere...free to be who we are.
