Spike Lee had an interview with Ed Gordon on Our World with Black Enterprise scheduled to air this weekend. In the interview he complained about “coonery and buffoonery” and both of Tyler Perry’s shows “Meet the Browns” and “House of Payne,” comparing them to characters from minstrel shows.

“We’ve had this discussion back and forth. When John Singleton [made 'Boyz in the Hood'], people came out to see it. But when he did ‘Rosewood,’ nobody showed up. So a lot of this is on us! You vote with your pocketbook, your wallet. You vote with your time sitting in front of the idiot box, and [Tyler Perry] has a huge audience. We shouldn’t think that Tyler Perry is going to make the same film that I am going to make, or that John Singleton or my cousin Malcolm Lee [would make]. As African-Americans, we’re not one monolithic group, so there is room for all of that. But at the same time, for me, the imaging is troubling and it harkens back to ‘Amos n’ Andy.’”

“Each artist should be allowed to pursue their artistic endeavors, but I still think there is a lot of stuff out today that is coonery and buffoonery. I know it’s making a lot of money and breaking records, but we can do better. … I am a huge basketball fan, and when I watch the games on TNT, I see these two ads for these two shows (Tyler Perry’s “Meet the Browns” and “House of Payne”), and I am scratching my head. We got a black president, and we going back to Mantan Moreland and Sleep ‘n’ Eat?

  • Spike Lee is an Idiot!
  • I think that here in lies the problem, we as a people cannot stand to see the other succeed. Spike Lee had the spotlight for a long time and has since taken a backseat to Tyler Perry. I think both intellectual brothers bring something to the table, something different from each other. Keep up the good work Tyler Perry, I love you!!!
  • I admire and respect both Spike Lee and Tyler Perry. Admittingly 'Meet the Browns' is a little disturbing to me so I choose not to watch it. However I will spend money at the Theatre's to see a Tyler Perry movie if it peaks my interest. I've spent plenty money on Spike Lee's movies as well. I say this to say, people should be able to create and view what is appealing to them. Let he that is perfect sit in judgement of others. Much luv to you both and may you be blessed with continued success.
  • Spike put the HaterAde down.
  • This is too typical of what bothers us as a people. Here are two successful black men and one can't stand that the other is successful. We don't know how to peacefully co-exist and support each other. Just like the proverbial crabs in a barrel...only thing is, when the tide comes in and pulls the barrel out into the ocean, ALL of the crabs drift away. You can like Spike Lee's movies for what they are and at the same time enjoy Tyler Perry's movies as well. Who gave Spike Lee and those of his ilk the right to decide what is "coonery and buffoonery"....sometimes it is most important to just shut up and be black....
  • I enjoy Tyler Perry as I have Spike Lee, although Mr. Perry speaks more to me, and as some have noted. Just about everyone has a Madea in their family. He is an uplifting person and so far hasn't spoken ill of anyone else. He owns his own studio. (How about that Spike) Spike Lee is just being Spike Lee. He has always said what he thought, wrong, right or indifferent. This is America and I am grateful for the dialogue. At least we can say what we need to say. After all, it's an opinion and you all know what that means. :~)
  • I dont think that Lees quib was a direct jab @ Perry. To me it seems that Lee was only stating his concern that if Perry has such a wide platform why use it with the subpar characters and story lines. People are watching us
  • I think that Spike Lee is a hater, why would you try to put another bother down. When Spike came out with his movies black people supported him so why would he talk about Tyler Perry. To me if Spike had a movie out and Tyler Perry had a movie out i will go see Tyler Perry his movies make more sense to me. Stop Hating On Your Brother.
  • In all these war of WORDS, my question is where is the evidence of productivity? Where is the evidence of how many black actors are working? Where is the evidence of the studios dedicated to the pioneers in the industry? There is a set time for everyone and everything. Let us use the time wisely that has been given to us.
  • Folks need to chill, everthing is not always about positive messages. Why can't it be for entertainment purposes. I don't need serious all the time. I need to laugh and chill. It's all in fun. There's a character like Madea in most of our families and if you pay attention there are messages in his movies.
  • I just want to say that Spike Lee is like crab in a barrel. Every time a black man comes up he tries to bring him down. Just because he not the premier black film maker anymore is no reason to hate on Tyler Perry. Obviously he has forgotten about the earlier stuff he did. It wasn't all "Get on the Bus". Do the Right Thing, Clockers, School Daze, Girl 6 & Bamboozled were not the most uplifting movies for our people. I think Tyler is a genius. You act like these people don't exist in your family. All he's doing is wrtiting what's real. Plus he does a lot in our community by keeping lesser known black actors working and donating money to great causes. Tyler alot of people love you for what you do. Don't let the devil steal your joy! Spike you need to stop being such a hypocrite and a hater of you own people.

  • Does every thing black have to be positive or can some things just be positively black? The bottom line Mr. Lee is that there are some Madea-type, Brown-type, Payne-type characters in some Black families. Although the behavior or misbehavior is entertaining and sometimes embarrassing, the positive and consience messages that the movies, plays, and television shows bring to the Black community are welcomed and long overdue. For the first time I can remember, Black people are talking about GOD on television. I can't even remember this on the Cosby Show. My parents weren't a doctor and a lawyer. As a matter of fact neither of them attended college. My father only completed grade school because he had to work on the family farm. So although inspirational, the Cosby were not a reality for me. The Tyler Perry shows come closer to my realty. There is a view of everyday problems and a positive method to handle them. So let's says it is the difference on how country people live verses city people or the poor verses the well-to-do. Whatever you want to call it; however you look at it; what is coonery and bafoonery to you Mr. Lee is a powerful and loving message to some of the rest of us. Make no mistake, but you do not speak for me. I have enjoyed your movies over the years and the positive messages within. I look forward to the next Spike Lee Joint. But here and now is Mr. Perry's time. We love him. We love what he stands for. We love his messages. We are not putting on a show for the white folk. We are loving and living and don't care who's watching!

Coming January 2010 Prince Of Hitsville, starring Will Dalton. A young talent who will “Make You Wanna Holla” when you see him play one of our greatest, writes, composer and singers. “Prince Of Hitsville” is a story about the events leading up to the making of the greatest album of all time. The film deals with the rift between Marvin & Berry leaving Anna Marvin wife Berry sister stuck in the middle. With original music and a great cast we are sure people will love what we have created.
  • Does it really matter what Spike Lee thinks, who really cares, there are a lot of black comedies that to me are totally foolish, somewhat demeaning, and unrealistic...it's showbiz, there are things like "Big Moma, Nutty Professor, and Madea, its just entertainment like it or leave it...apparently people enjoy it, so whats Lee's opinion got to do with it? It's just diversity after all, pick the one ya enjoy, dont watch the ones you dont, it's all fiction people...personally i think that the "Judge Show's" like Judy, Joe, and the like show and do more damage as most of the plantiffs and defendants are blacks
