Spike Lee had an interview with Ed Gordon on Our World with Black Enterprise scheduled to air this weekend. In the interview he complained about “coonery and buffoonery” and both of Tyler Perry’s shows “Meet the Browns” and “House of Payne,” comparing them to characters from minstrel shows.

“We’ve had this discussion back and forth. When John Singleton [made 'Boyz in the Hood'], people came out to see it. But when he did ‘Rosewood,’ nobody showed up. So a lot of this is on us! You vote with your pocketbook, your wallet. You vote with your time sitting in front of the idiot box, and [Tyler Perry] has a huge audience. We shouldn’t think that Tyler Perry is going to make the same film that I am going to make, or that John Singleton or my cousin Malcolm Lee [would make]. As African-Americans, we’re not one monolithic group, so there is room for all of that. But at the same time, for me, the imaging is troubling and it harkens back to ‘Amos n’ Andy.’”

“Each artist should be allowed to pursue their artistic endeavors, but I still think there is a lot of stuff out today that is coonery and buffoonery. I know it’s making a lot of money and breaking records, but we can do better. … I am a huge basketball fan, and when I watch the games on TNT, I see these two ads for these two shows (Tyler Perry’s “Meet the Browns” and “House of Payne”), and I am scratching my head. We got a black president, and we going back to Mantan Moreland and Sleep ‘n’ Eat?

  • This is so true. Tyler Perry you get humor. Spike Lee you get hisotry. Stop laughing and take a good look in the mirror. People used to have the nerve to say " oh you think you look good because you are light skin". I am light skin because my great grandmother was raped when she was a slave and we know this because the time of the birth and the time My great great grandfather was able to purchase his wife's freedom. Just because some people act or live a Ghetto life does not mean we all do and just because some black familys have a drunk uncle does not mean we all do. oh an by the way I do not hold Barack Obama as my first black president. That title will belong a president with a black mother and a black father. Congratulations to our first bi-racial president. You can be mad at me but I don't care!
  • Spike Lee is correct in criticizing Tyler Perry he can do better. Spike Lee not hating but given his opinion and which I agree with him.
    • Wow...you seem like the only one with sense here. If one more person says "Spike Lee BE H@TINNNNNN!!!" I'm gonna find them and punch them in the face.
  • SPIKE JUST HATIN. ALL TYLER SHOWS MAKE YOU THINK. IF IT WAS NOT FUNNY PEOPLE WOULD NOT WATCH IT COME ON KEEP IT REAL. BLACKS GET MAD WHEN OTHER BLACKS MAKE IT BIG. LOOK WE HAVE MOVIES LIKE BIG MOMMA HOUSE AN BLACK STAND UP COMICS THAT TALK AN DOWN PLAY BLACKS AN WE LOL AT THEM CT A BUT JUST BECAUSE TYLER HAS SOME MOVIES AN SHOWS THAT ACT A fool he's making us look bad.why cant you look at the bigger massage in the story line. meet the browns Mr browns open his house to people in need house of pain its about family love god an respect..i hate when black try to bring down black when they make it no one says anything about BET collage hill them fool fight drink an party nothing about school music video's all day what blacks cant be anything else in life but rappers an singers they show the same movies that don't make blacks look good but no one talks about that. how many of the people the agree with spike go to church every Sunday when Tyler first started his plays the people the went were god fearing people. on the real i understand what spike is saying. i just don't agree. if he dose not like his movies don't watch them an make your own how you think we should be made
    • Oh come on and I guess you are one of those blacks that likes to use the word n*gga. even though it has a history. Go read a book and learn some HISTORY!!! That will be todays objective. as for Blacks hating on blacks making it. Don't come to baltimore if you are black with a nice car, we have a lot of blacks that will kill you for it. But i guess you forgot about all the black on black crime huh?
    • To Ann:

Who exactly were you talking to, Ann?
  • While I actualy like SOME (basically anything that DOES NOT INCLUDE Madea, The Browns, or some of the questionable characterizations) of Tyler's work, and respect the fact that he has been able to realize creating and owning his own film and TV operation that rivals hollyWEIRD, I feel Spike 1,000% on this one. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie aren't the only ones guilty in our demise, y'all, and Spike calling it out is not "Hatin'" or "worrying too much about what Mr. Charlie thinks" as it is a RESPONSIBLE, CRITICAL, and PROACTIVE countermeasure to OUR OWN IGNORANCE and involvement in our own dumbing-down demise.

All of this kneejerk dissing of Spike's comments proves to me and infinitely underscores something once again that is all too perpetual in this ameriKKKan continent: that STILL way too many of us don't know, don't care to know, and DON'T GIVE A DAMN about our history (but will gladly accept WITHOUT QUESTION someone else's account of our history), and can't see the connection between then and now. Too many of us would rather support us shucking and jiving, than seeing and listening to THOUGHT-PROVOKING, CONSCIOUS Black-produced and written countermedia such as:Goodbye Uncle Tom - ROOTS has nothing on this movie,Daughters of the Dust, Sankofa, The C.S.A.-a SCATHING, DAMNING satire, Bamboozled, The Boondocks, Dancing in September,Any Hip-Hop acts that ARE NOT on MTV, VH-1, BET, RADIO ONE or other mainstream networks, Any books or videos by Ashra and Merira Kwesi, Dr. John Henrik-Clarke, Drucilla Huston-Dunjee, Dr. Yosef Ben-Yochannon, Dr. Frances Cress-Welsing*

*Any ALTERNATIVE radio or media like libradio.com, conscioushiphop.com, blackconsciousness.com, daveyd.com, Hard Knock Radio*

In closing, there's a quote by Malcolm X that I feel is QUITE applicable here, that being, "Of all OUR studies, HISTORY, is BEST QUALIFIED to reward all research".
    • THANK YOU! I totally agree with you.

Both Perry and Lee are talented. However, Lee was and is not afraid to add more dimension to his Black characters! He goes against the grain and African-American mainstream sheep are afraid of going against the grain. Perry is more mainstream, hip, and appeals towards people who don't want to think when they see a film. That's okay...that who he chooses as his audience. HOWEVER, as you can see most of the people who are Perry fans and are calling Spike a "hater" sound they all have the I.Q. of a Rice Krispie treat.

As much as African-Americans complain about how Blacks need more serious roles, we sure act like we are afraid to invite it. Perry does give new Black actors more opportunities but Jesus Christ, as some more dimension Perry!

I don't know why Black people bash Spike Lee so much. He's for us. Hell, even Black people are sizing up Obama along with whites. We need to stop it. This is why some Africans and Caribbeans think they are better and more civilized than us!
  • wow reading these blogs are so sad but like the old saying goes white folks don't have to do anything to us because we do it to our self's and if you sit in one spot long enough someone will evently come and piss on you
  • until....and let me repeat myself...until we can deal with what ails us from in the home...we CANNOT deal with whats going on on the OUTSIDE home....we need to work from WITHIN...to get to the Outer....all of the abuse that we endure at some of these homes is incrdulous!!! And we are taught to be ashamed of exposin it....TYLERS NOT ASHAMED AND I APPLAUD THE MAN!!! Dont look at what you see on the screen all of the time...try and ascertain the MESSAGE YALL!!! Once you get the message EVERYTHING ELSE FALLS INTO PLACE!! LUV YOU SPIKE BUT ON THIS ONE YOU ARE WRONG...WRONG...AND WRONG!! Talk about spliiting up and already DAMAGED COMMUNITY...this is the way to do it by having all of sit here and have to pit you against him...way to go...and you say you are all about being black...shame...shame...shame!! Im disappointed in you....thought u were better than that!!!
  • I like Both Spike and Tyler....Spike has always been one to make you think about what his messages are REALLY about BUT Tyler brings the same messages to the table but with a softer side to it....Spike is Brash...I have no problem with that...Spike touches on the racial divide between us....TYLER talks about the racial divide amongst FAMILY. When I watch Tylers movies I dont see what some of you see as Boofoonery..or even Coonery...what I see is a man trying to get to the heart and soul of what is plaguing Black America...MENTAL HEALTH!! African Americans are Hurting...not just from racism...but from BETRAYAL OF FAMILY....women and men are being sexually abused...molested and battered physically at an alarming rate in our communities and its never being addressed as it should be...We are taught not share our feelings...wear our feelings on our shoulders...dont tell what goes in your in house cuz that aint nobodys business kinda crap, and we leave it like that. Tyler brings all of this out and on the table....ITS REAL YALL!! Spike talks about issues that are racially charged and I luv it BUT its soooo aggressive filled and angry just like how we are at times....the RACISM that we deal with everyday not only stems from how we are sometimes treated by others BUT from how we are treated at HOME...Lets face it we have been conditioned witha mindset to hate ourselves and those with and around us...BUT until we can deal with our own personal demons that scrutinize us from in the house...We can not deal with the issues that Spike presents to us through his movies. Im not calling Spike a hater but I am saying that he is hating on Tylers success in being able to reach people. Some of us have not come to the level of maturity that one is ready for what Spike has to say....WHY?? because of the inner demons that still haunt us from within...the FAMILY SECT....
  • It's funny that people should find Spike's comments offensive, but I can understand and relate to his sentiments well. Way before meet the Browns, I knew Tyler Perry was just capitalizing on the commercialism of what I would like to consider "Ignorant Niggerty". Being an african-american, I realized that a lot of black people prefer to go back and use what they know makes money vs. making new ways. Tyler Perry isn't the only one, he's just the most successful at it.

Someone else said it earlier.....there's August Wilson. I mean there were people who actually made it a point to push concepts of Blacks into realms never seen before, but it seems that those people have passed. Just as Langston Hughes, James Baldwin, Chester Himes, Zora Neal Hurston and many others, we have a responsibility to create quality works that reflect positively. It seems that TP is just in it to make a name for himself.

  • Tyler Perry is "low brow" and speaks to those who are such. His plays are buffonery and is like watching Good Times on stage. If you want real theater please watch and August Wilson play The Piano Lesson or Two Trains Running. I had the pleasure of watching "Miracle at St. Anna's" and was seriously impressed!
  • Laughing is important, but in these horrendous times for African-Americans, we do need to get serious. We have a whole generation who knows "how Grandma handles trouble with a gun", but have no idea about Black History. Perry came up with a black grandma character whose mouth is vicious and carries a weapon, some people like it and some people don't. Actually, I kind of liked what he was becoming until he brought Oprah and Gail a Bentley, give me a break. Imagine how many Black students that could have sent to college. Some of Spikes movies were thought provoking (Malcolm X, sisters hating each other because of the color of their skin, African- American soldiers). The average Black child can name 20 rappers, but ask them to name 10 African-Americans historical figures besides Obama and King and you might get five names. Every nationality ensures that their children know their history, here in Illinois the Holocaust is mandatory. Our children look at us: African American Adults for guidance. If all we watch are comedies, skipping historical movies of substance, not letting our children know that the stories of real African American heroes may never be in a movie and if a movie of historical value comes to the screen you can and should support that movie, then OUR real story will never be told. As I have often told my daughter that young people need to take their favorite stars and tell this story: Until young people see Chris Brown hanging from a tree, Little Wayne being beat after running away from a plantation, Jay-Z and P. Diddy killed for trying to read, Beyonce's birth after being raped by the white plantation owner then used as a house negro because she is masters child, or Rihanna being sexually abused by the masters son, then I believe our children and people will continually be the lost people of America.....
    • Liked what you had to say BUT..what Tyler Perry puts in his MOVIES is VERY REAL...Domestic violence...REAL.....Sexual abuse....REAL....DRUGS in th community...REAL....Prostitutes ....REAL....Pimps.....REAL...MADEA....WHICH means momma dear.....REAL!!! Everything that Tyler addresses in these movies is real...we are just being conditioned not to touch on the issues...why BECAUSE THEY WANT US TO THINK THAT RACE is the BIGGEST issue...and its isnt...the focus ON FAMILY IS WAYYYYYY LARGER...and needs to be talked about....You say that there are kids who donmt know about historical figures....right?!?...Well guess what A FAMILY MEMBER OR PARENTS not PARENT should be teaching this...We talk about racism....must address it AT HOME...WITH FAMILY...OR PARENTS...not PARENT.....Teen pregnancy in OUR community is running rampant...why??? WE HAVE NO PARENTS to steer these young children in the right direction. You want these kids to become EDUCATED....starts at HOME....dealing with issues from the inside!!!
  • I love Spike Lee and respect his talent, but he's way off base on this one. Spike has gotten a little too big for his britches to think he can talk down about another successful brother in public. I don't accept his characterization of TPs work as buffoonery any more than I accept Spike's portrayal of Black women and crackheads as what's real about us. And for you who can't shake the "Massuh" Syndrome that says "We gotta look 'RIGHT' for Massuh Charlie", please get a grip. I won't apologize for being a huge fan of Amos 'N Andy because my parents taught me enough self love that there was no way that I could see Amos 'N Andy caricatures as representing anything but the brilliant comedic actors that they were. In the same way, I see David Mann (Mr. Brown) as an incredibly talented actor. I once saw my father fall out of a chair laughing at A&A. Some of you have just not had enough joy and laughter in your life. You and Spike are too damned concerned about Massuh Charlie. Damn him. And please teach your children to love themselves and don't worry so much about outer appearances. Tyler Perry is a genius and Spike could learn some things from him about creating value in society.
  • Spike Lee movies are not the best if I may say so. I mean GET ON THE BUS!!!! Garbage! Spike Lee is jealous of Tyler Perry success, and he uses excuses such as the ones in this article to cover it up. He believes that the messages that he delivers are better then why is he not number one at the box office? We as a people make the ultimate decision and we can support and watch whom ever we want.
    • A lot of these posts refer to Spike Lee's "jealousy", and seem to equate box office success and mass appeal with quality. This position, in my mind, is completely false and misguided, and points to the overall dumbing down of our society.

Spkie Lee has a great point here, and to me, this goes well beyond the movies that we see. I think we can also include the music that we -- and our children -- listen to on radio stations, that promote drug and alcohol use, perverse sex acts, and living the "thug life". Many children (and adults) dance and repeat lyrics to songs that they do not know the meaning to.

True, we can turn our radios and televisions off, and I think Spike is all but alluding to the fact that we have to do that now.

These negative images and lyrics are so profound now that they are simply inescapable. What sells at the box office and in record stores speaks to our complacency, and we are not challenging our artists to put out more relevant and thought-provoking works.

These artists that now have the platform to reach our demographic can and should use it for more positive and meaninful purposes, other than following a simple recipe for them to make millions of dollars. Artists of today are churned out not because of their raw talents, but moreso of their ability to SELL, SELL, SELL.

Unfortunately, black directors and artists concerned with the quality of their work are simply drowned out by the media darlings of today, who have the platform that they do because white media loves nothing more than to have all these examples of us making fools of ourselves.

Please, lets not equate quality with success in terms of sales and marketability...
    • I am with you on that!! AMEN!!!!

  • ---- Let me reemphasize a statement made on this comment post that basically sums up what i feel about Tyler Perrys' Movies, Plays and T.V. shows --- "HE IS AS BAD AS THE CRACK DEALER ON THE STREET MAKING MONEY OFF THE IGNORANCE OF OTHERS."
    • hmmm...well what do you think about Martin Lawrence...have any of his movies or shows been like Coonery or Boofoonery?? Lets see he played his mom on his show Martin...and hmmm lets see Big Mommas house....what do you think about that...lets not take things out of context here....
  • I must repeat a previous statement from this comment post because it basically summed -up what I feel about Tyler Perrys' movies - - - "HE IS AS BAD AS THE CRACK DEALER ON THE STREET MAKING MONEY OFF THE IGNORANCE OF OTHERS!"
