Winning The War On Terror

I was brought to tears by the President’s simple, but truthful approach to building a bridge with the Muslim world.  This is the real way to fight terrorism, through open and honest dialogue, where we promote love and destroy hate.  We are now witnessing the front line of the battle.  The battle for the hearts and minds of the young men who have believed in the hatred spewed by their terrorist leaders is beginning to be won when our President makes speeches like this.  But I couldn't believe that even on CNN the President’s trip was met with skepticism.  For America to heal the wounds, we must actively work to heal our own hearts.  Thank God the President was deliberate, forthright and leading his people in his actions and speech this morning.  Now it’s time to have our hearts and actions catch up, as this is the way to healing.  Let’s eradicate Islamophobia.  Start now in your own heart and let’s really make this a new beginning!!!

  • I am glad something is being done.
  • "Blessed are the peacemakers." "Education and innovation is the the currency of the 21st century." "It is time for us to act on what everyone knows is true." AMAZING! Can he be president forever?
  • I knew you would put this up. I was wondering how many people was and should be checking todays commencement speech.

  • Wow, we have a President who was willing to 1. speak in other languages; acknowledging the culture practices of others while engaging in even the small facial and body gestures of hospitality so familiar to those living in the Middle East, 2. acknowledge the history of colonization in Africa and the Middle East, 3. Acknowledge the history and contributions of Islam, 4. Speak with compassion and understanding about paving new paths forward, acknowledging our own shortcomings first and foremost, i think we call this responsibility....

As for the Palestinian and Israeli conflict, more was acknowledged in this one speech than has been by American "brokers" in a long long time, but there is still much to be said and done. One cannot easily speak of "building an economy" when basic building supplies are still not permitted to enter Gaza, along with fuel, food, and medicine by the Israeli closure of Gaza. A two-state solution looks more and more like a fantasy, albeit the only fantasy that is speakable at the moment. For those familiar in the least bit with the population demographics and mapping of the land, truly establishing two-states that are both secure and independent is an illusion, but perhaps this acknowledgment will only come as our perceptions and education on the issue continue to grow and shift. Apartheid must be called what it is; we know separate but equal fails, but this of course could not be spoken yet!!

Thank you for sharing this piece, we have truly turned a corner in American and world history, and once again I feel honored to call myself an American and global citizen.
  • Thanks for posting this. I'm gonna watch it right now. Obama is such a blessing!
  • Beautiful..

  • A quick comment and I'm sure I'll add more later--it was already picked up by the news pundits--but the strongest conciliation Obama could offer to the Muslim world to show we are willing to meet them halfway is that we have fought for women's right to wear the hijab. And that is a half truth, we've fought for the hair covering, but the traditional 'box dress' of Iran and Saudi Arabia are not permitted. {in extreme interpretations of traditional Islamic culture all you should see of a woman are hands, feet, and eyes.}

This and the naivete of his Jurusalem position were the two things that stood out.

He does realize that to the right wingers of both sides what he proposes is an impossibility. Any idea of a restored Israel to a right winger must include the site of Solomon's temple, and any fundamentalist Muslim will quote some hadith about no Jewish state in the lands of Arabia. [And by Arabia they mean from Morocco to Iraq.]

Now admittedly the right and left here are none too friendly and the centrist heads manage to garner control. But right and left in America are already resolved under one government. What we have in Israel and the Palestinians are two opposing right wing parties, and that sh*t hit like anti-matter [KA-BOOM!] because of the religious undercurrents.

America's hand in this is strange. Because we, especially via Obama recognize that we unantagonized overthrew a legitimate Iranian government to greedily pursue oil interests. They at one point had the moral upper hand in this--and may still think they have it but we feel acts of terrorism have balanced the aggression [but terror isn't overthrowing the government, that practically makes someone a slave.] Our unprovoked menace in the interest of our greed propels their desire for a weapon. Now in our heads "WE ARE AMERICA" as Shepherd Smith proudly proclaimed, and we the people are not always aware of the machinations of our government and industry in our name. We think we are better than the image our government at times projects and learn from our mistakes, but who are we to force our opinions of ourselves on another? If someone doesn't trust you, then they don't trust you, that is their right, and it is also their right to assure their security; and therein lies our problem. Their security is our [and largely Israel's] insecurity. [Israel because they are seen as proxies of our interest, the past.]

Thus I see his centrist solution as immaterial. If greyness is the un-pure result of the mixture of two pure substances, light and darkness, then this is what I mean by immaterial. He's taken two valid positions and from them made a third option which has the appearance of being valid, but given the pure character of it's components cannot be reconciled against their nature, that is to say grey is neither light nor dark, it is intermediate (which isn't pure.)

He's made a solution for the moderates.
    (approx by bell curve)
    25%-extreme right
    5%-right leaning
    5%-center leaning from right
    30%-center
    5%-center leaning from left
    5%-left leaning
    25%-extreme left

This is how populations divide themselves over popular issues. Basically 30% left, 30% right, with a slight majority in the center at 40%. But if you add in the concept of nationalism by challenging sovereignty the initial tendency is to plunge to the right. Nationalism by nature provides the push towards a working majority which can otherwise only be internally attained by diplomacy.

A cake loses all characteristics of mix, butter, eggs, and water. If Israel is an egg and wants to be an egg, and Palestine is water and wants to be water, and as a compromise you offer to bake a cake have you truly served either party's interest?

[We know it and we say it amongst ourselves but should he have called Iraq a war of choice? Doesn't change anything it is what he ran on, but that's what I'm saying there are things you say in house that you don't say outside, but if they already have ears in our country what's the difference. Does to say so reduce our leverage with Iran which has already been diminished because of the post Iranian revolution.

When you overthrow a democratically elected leader and prop up a strong man who terrorizes his people is that a form of terrorism?

otherwise it was a speech they needed to hear. Womens rights. Religious freedom. Extremism[he who kills an innocent kills all mankind, and he who saves a life saves all mankind.]
    • Keep your base, keep the leaners leaning, and peel off 5% from the center and you can form a popular majority though not a mathematical one.

A body with enough force or leverage to be an obstruction.

  • Malcom's blueprint,now Obama's mission....beautiful.
  • This so important and intresting. I think that is is time for an honest exchange bwtween civilizations as is done between individuals!
  • I have to say that while I disagree with 90% of our President's ideas, this speech was on point. He hit on much of the hot button points such as women's rights, extremism, stereotypes, etc that I was frankly surprised to hear him take that chance. Nevertheless, it had to be said. Now it is up to the those of the moderate faction of the Muslim faith to step up and stomp the extreme factions into silence. We'll see, hope, and pray that it goes well.
  • Well written Uncle Russy something as simple as Open Dialog is the Key!! For all the skeptics out there you can only learn or gain an understanding of something once the floor is open for discussion. We all remember our last President, and how he failed to create such oppurtunities to address and disuss certain issues. This ultimatley allowed some Americans to draw conclusions about Islamic countries, and Islamic countries drew conclusions about Americans.

Thank Goodness for Articulation- Keep Grinding U.S. Keep Grinding Obama!!!!
