WARNING: THESE VIDEOS MIGHT MAKE YOU GET UP AND DO SOMETHING

The crisis of poverty in the Black community has sparked the Poor People’s Campaign, the Gathering of Hearts Organization and the Nation of Islam’s Southhaven Study Group to mobilize an upcoming public hearing and march in the Delta of Mississippi on June 19-20.

“Someone has to help shed light on the living conditions in places like Louisiana and Mississippi. No one should have to live like this, no where in the world and especially not in America,” said Antoinette Harrell.

Ms. Harrell is the co-founder of Gathering of Hearts and has organized poverty tours for the last six months in both Louisiana and Mississippi. She has planned another tour for June 19 followed by the public hearing at Quitman County Elementary School in Lambert, MS. The march will take place on June 20 in Jackson, MS.

“To see people without clean water, living on dirt floors and having nothing for the children to even play on is horrendous”, she said. “Every citizen has a human right to these things but the people of Mississippi are being robbed.”

The concept of the Poor People’s Campaign was born out of Dr. Martin Luther King’s 1968 plan of action to demand President Lyndon and Congress to help address the need for jobs, decent homes, health care and education in rural America.

The coalition of organizations has also launched a national online fundraising campaign for the family of Wade Brown, his wife Pricilla and their two daughters. All of the rooms in their miserable home leaks severely, have huge holes in the floor and they are hoping these efforts will bring more attention to their neighborhood.

According to the 2009 Mississippi Human Development Report, “a Black male born in Mississippi can expect a shorter life span than the average American in 1960. A Black woman in Mississippi earns less today than the typical American in 1960.”

The report also stated that the “overall infant mortality rate for non-Whites in Mississippi is more than 18 per 1,000 births, about the same as Libya and Thailand. Overall, Black Mississippians are worse off than other Black Americans, ranking second to last on the health and income index (just ahead of Louisiana) but dead last in education”.

  • WHAT KIND OF IGNORANCE IS THIS? HAVE THE REPRESENTATIVES OF THIS CITY/TOWN LOST THERI MINDS TO IGNORE THAT THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE LIVING CONDITIONS? WHO AND WHAT POLITICAL REPRESENTATIVE WAS ELECTED IN THIS AREA? WHAT THE HELL CRAZINESS IS GOING ON AND NOTHING IS BEING DONE ABOUT IT.

HAS THE SO-CALLED YOUR PEOPLES PRESIDENT SEEN THIS VIDEO? HAS THE SENATOR FROM THAT STATE SEEN THIS AND EVEN BOTHERED TO DO SOMETHING? THIS IS AS BAD AS MODERN DAY SLAVERY WITH THESE LIVING CONDITIONS...WILL ANYONE DO SOMETHING TO HELP THIS SITUATION? HEAR ME HOLLA.....WHAT CAN WE DO TO ASSIST THESE PEOPLE....WHERE ARE THE SO-CALLED ACTIVIST..CALL THE NEWSPAPERS AND TELEVISION STATIONS...SOMEBODY PLEASE.......MAY OUR CREATOR SHINE DOWN ON THESE FAMMILIES AND BRING IN SOME PROSPERITY.....

AND PLEASE SAVE THESE CHILDREN AND OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS..
  • THIS IS HOW THE GOVERNMENT TREAT HUMANS...AN THEY LOCK MIKE VIC UP FOR A ANIMAL.....LEARN THE TRUTH ABOUT YOUR GOVERNMRNT!
  • Got dang man! This is sad as hell. Where is David Banner? Can Global Grind start a fundraiser for his just like the one Kimora is doing?
    • I am asking the same question of where is David Banner, Souljah boy and all those greats that Mississippi has given birth to you. I am one of the brothers who is in the trenches and on the ground level working with these young brothers in Glendora, Ms, and other impoverished areas in MS. This crisis is certainly a real life castrophe. The brothers are sincere and truthfull and desire change and the conditions they state are ACTUAL FACTS, we witnessed them first hand on June 19, 2009. We are now organizing a youth empowerment concert and conference on Aug 28, 2009 on the death anniversary of Emitt till. All proceeds are going to build a Library Learning Center and a playground and park for the children. It is alot that a few good men and women are doing to make a difference in the lives of this community. We would love to have the celebrities, but our people can't wait on them, we are TAKING RESPONSIBILTY TO BUILD OUR COMMUNITIES. several people don't know this area in the video is where Emitt Till was killed and also where Sonny Boy Williams is from. The whole small community is a historical land mark, left for dead to be written out of history. I am going to do my part, YOU DO YOURS! PEACE
  • Wow I just looked at the videos, and its SHOCKING!! but not unbeliveable to know that this is taking place. Need more info that link is not working and I wantto do more than just donate
    • Mona973 I am working on the ground level with these boys and other areas in MS. This is my email - kkyates1@yahoo.com. I can assist your desire to get involve.
  • This is very very sad. I am going to spread this Brother Jesse.
  • This is real. I was born and raised in New Orleans, La. I know from personal experience that there is no real education system in Louisiana and Mississippi is no better. The truth of the matter is No one cares. Talk of hope is not helping. We need action. We need people who care.
  • Dang man....who in the hell is their parents is my question? What do they do for a living?
  • Wow, this is sad. I am going to get with you Brother Jesse and see how I can HELP instead of just CRITIQUE like most people on here are doing.

BTW, did any of you notice that there is a number to call at the bottom of this post? TRY picking up the phone. And if you are from Mississippi how about giving back to your neighborhood.

This is a dang shame. Thanks Bro. Jesse for posting this.
  • There's so many angles here to speak on I'd be here all day. I wish people would stop bringing GOD up in this. I mean really. Most of all have never known what's it's like to be STARVING (not hungry), w/o shelter, w/o clothing, etc. If you were to be placed in those types of conditions for days, weeks, hell it's your life, you'd probably pray for your life to end.

Ignorance breeds ignorance. The first step in all of this is educating those that are ignorant. They don't know any better because most likely their parents didn't know any better. That's why so much of today's black youth are so F'd up! They were born into ignorance.

Another thing, this is the way THE SYSTEM was set up for us descendents of Africans. We are the only race who are divided as hell, don't know our roots, or our history. And the only one we do know is that which is painful, slavery.

The job that slavery was intended to do, make us ingnorant, forgetful, hateful, spiteful, lazy, jealous, etc., has already been done to us. I personally don't believe there is any help for us people of African descent. Too many hide behind education, bible's, attempts to blend in, etc. The handful of people that want to help is waaaaay to small to even place a dent in this situation.

I don't know what the answer is.

    • You have made some very valid points. Until we unify, this is going to be a sad reoccurring situation all over the country.
  • I agree that they need help and they definitely need some form of jobs closer to their home for their ENTIRE COMMUNITY!!!, but also these brothas need to continue their education as far as reading and communicating, and shaping up there appearance in order to get the jobs. I pray that some doors open up for their communities, because they shouldn't have to live like that.
  • if you want a better ife go get it. i was a 3rd genaration welfare kid. from when i was very young i did nothing but plan on getting out of the projects off welfare and live proud onmy own. i struggled but made the life i wanted along with many others. i feel bad for those who were displaced withall that went on, how ever i truely believe you live how you allow yourself to live. when my babies were young i cleaned homes i drove a cab i washed peoples clothes. i did all i had to along with my husband to put food onthe table. there were times we had even sold our blood plasma to but pampers. i REFUSED to ever depend onthe system. I swore to break the welfare cycle.
    • It sounds like you need to go to Mississippi and be a mentor. You would be surprised how so many of our young men DO NOT know how to "go get it"....offer help!
  • As a man thinketh, so is he.

  • Mississippi is not pathetic. These people are. (It's my home. I graduated college in 3 years and work as an editor at a major newspaper at only 22. And I'm NOT the only exception to the rule!)

I hope I don't come off heartless, because I do hate this situation. But, what makes me angry is the fact that I may hate it more than they do!

I feel heavy laden. I sympathize, but I don’t empathize. Yes, there’s a chronic disparity between whites and black concerning a myriad of issues. However, what that video showed — what I saw was not a discovery of the failures of the system. We already knew that. Rather, it identifies how the system is able to hold people down. The problem isn’t so much “the man” or lack of opportunities. The problem is learned helplessness! These guys said that place is home for them, therefore implying a refusal to seek betterment elsewhere. Their mentality seems to be, if it ain’t here and ain’t nobody giving it to me, then we just ain’t got nothing. Also, I further hold them accountable for perpetuating the problem by overtly and nonchalantly admitting they spend what little they have on illegal drugs and make babies “because they ain’t got nothing else to do.” Ohhhhh, ok! So since you’re in poverty and not doing a d@mn thing about it, you want to ensure the cycle continues for future generations. And not only will these kids be brought into a world of poverty, they’ll always be unfortunately raised in the midst of ignorance and laziness — a deadly combination.

To sum up my thoughts, yes, our government agencies and public bodies should do more for ALL people. But, if we don’t demand a stake in this world for ourselves and take action to maintain it, no one can help us. These men (the ones from the video, I’m not speaking of all impoverished) want handouts, and as the cliché goes, nothing in life is free!
    • Okay, SO WHAT you are from mississippi! Are you from where they are from? Did you live how they are living? BTW, you DO sound heartless. I disagree completely with your analysis. You said they should seek betterment elsewhere. HOW IN THE H*LL are they gonna do that if they can't even get jobs within walking distance of their homes or WHEN THERE ARE NO JOBS AVAILABLE. Let's be honest, betterment takes MONEY. Money makes the world go round. Just because they say it's "home" for them doesn't mean that they don't want better. This is a TRUE case of how AMERICA ignores their impoverished citizens and would rather sweep the issues under the rug. I think they are stuck in this cycle because no one has found a way out...there is no help near. I mean come on $6.00 FREAKIN DOLLARS for 3 hours of work is insulting and just plain against the law! These boys (for the most part)are crying, begging, and pleading for HELP! But instead you want to insist that they are lazy and ignorant! How disgustingly rude of you! Since you have such a problem with them...why don't you DO SOMETHING YOURSELF TO HELP this poverty stricken "AMERICAN" town!!!
    • Sounds like YOU need to go back to your state and offer this advice in person to these young people. Let's stop just analyzing on the Internet and get into the streets.
